Here is my FAVORITE thing about the PhotoPills App that I bet you haven't even noticed, heard of or understood what it was when you saw it last in the Planner Pill part of the App.
When trying to figure out if a location works well for the Sun or Moon, the FIND TOOL is fantastic but it is yet another complicated feature in PhotoPills to figure out on your own! Watch this tutorial to get a clear idea how best to take advantage of the Find Tool in PhotoPills and get out there for the upcoming Lunar Eclipse on January 31st!
Are you a beginner to Milky Way Photography and want to learn everything you can before you start this 2018 Milky Way Season! Please check out my upcoming Milky Way Course: photogadventures.com/milkywayc...
Pre-Order discount of $30 when you order before February 2nd!
Thanks for watching and see you next time!

Thanks, Josh! I was so blown away when Rafael pointed out the AR feature! It is so sweet to stand at a location and turn on the AR feature within the Find tool and plan a shot of your dreams with such ease!! The only sad part is more often than not you have to wait months or years for it! I gotta start creating a library of future plans. 😄 It’s going to run my life for me though. They will be must go trips just to get those shots! Thanks for watching, Josh! -Aaron

Great information Aaron! It seems like a really useful app, they should hire you for instructional vids. When you are talking about seeing the core of the MW just above horizon (you know, a fist or two - awesome) - it would be super helpful if you could cut in an image of what that may look like. Just getting the data to say it is possible to see it - is really great, but still feels a little risky for those of us who haven't shot it enough to have an idea of what it might look like low in the horizon. Would help to decide if that location is worth shooting at, or continue to scout for a better location. Thanks again for all your videos, and information, such a big help for a newbie to astrophotography!
@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Neale! Actually, my Milky Way Course has that information and shows examples of what it might look like. I like the idea of including it in videos like these but the look of the Milky Way is different depending on where you will be looking at it so I can't show just one example. For instance, in my Milky Way Course I gave examples from my perspective in Utah and then from a person's perspective in New Zealand. Then it is different all points in-between! As far as LATITUDE changes, the Milky Way will look different. I would love to be hired by PhotoPills but I accept that I am at least their good friend now. Especially since I keep proselyting how awesome their app is for completely free! :D Well, the app is $10 but my commission is zero. Thanks for your kind words and I will definitely have to add a video to my list where I explain the look of the Milky Way to newbs to Astrophotography and have fun telling that story! Because it is fascinating to me! :D Wearing my NASA shirt right now! Thanks for watching, Neale! -Aaron

Hey Andrew! I just tested it and the only feature they CURRENTLY have is to save out the image of your list. which you can do by taking a screenshot anyway. So sadly, no exporting to Google Calendar without you transcribing the info yourself. But still, way way powerful tool for planning your own Mark Gee adventure where he got that awesome Timelapse of the moon over that public viewpoint! :D Thanks for watching, Andrew! -Aaron

The Andriod version is different than the IOS version. When you enter Find in the Planner is asks for Sun or Moon. Then you can set the azimuth and elevation and look at the AR, but it's not as detailed.
@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Tye for that info! I was honestly curious how it was getting displayed on Android. I am going to buy an android device to use JUST so that I can test things like this app against both my iOS phone and the Android version. So the functionality is there it just isn't as detailed? Does anything not work? Thanks for watching, and I hope the Android version provides what you need still for it! :D -Aaron
@tyesphoto
@tyesphoto 6 жыл бұрын
Reply from German: Yes, in the iOS version you can Find a sun or moon by azimuth or by azimuth&elevation. However we detected that few people used the tool to find only by Azimuth (is quite useless), so we decided to remove it in the Android version. The find by azimuth&elevation is more powerful, because you can decide where exactly want the son or the moon to be.d We probably remove the find by azimuth tool in the iOS version too in a future update, when we redesign this tool. You'll find more videos and tutorials here: www.photopills.com/academy Best regards, Germán Marquès
@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh well okay, that is fine by me then! I never even showed the ONLY Azimuth versions because they really are redundant and just the same thing minus one very useful feature. If you don't care how high your sun is it is easy to set the elevation within its possible range and then search with the Magnifying glass to see what days it occurs on. Thanks for sharing, German's response to that! Makes total sense to me. Glad that it doesn't mean important functionality is missing for Android users!! -Aaron

Let me find tune that question… I meant if I go out to photograph the Milky Way or the night of a new moon, does it matter whether or not it has set?
@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Heya Gary! Simple answer is that it will not. Why? Because on a night of a New moon and several nights preceding the new moon and for several nights after the New Moon the moon will never be in the sky during FULL DARKNESS. Two things to know, the New Moon period only exists because it is a period every month that the Moon is between us and the Sun which puts its in shadow side facing us AND that means it is only up during the day. It is basically following the Sun with each rise and set for several dats. The second thing to know - and you probably know this but since I said full darkness I want to clarify when that is - is that when the sun sets the twilight periods begin and continue until the Sun is far enough below the horizon that the location you are standing at is in full darkness. And remains in full darkness until the Twilight periods return just before the sunrise. So during the New Moon week and a little more, the Moon is timing its presence in the sky with the sun and when it starts getting off-sync with the rise and set of the Sun it still is more often up only during the Twilight periods which means it isn't a good time to shoot the Milky Way anyway! :D Lot of info, hope I got that to make sense! I was up late last night and I am hoping my brain has woken up by now and could teach that with simple terms. Thanks for watching, Gary! :D -Aaron

@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Man, there should be a “Cancel” or “Done” at the top in blue letters and I highly doubt the difference on Android is that. Something has to be up. How are you getting to it? Make sure you are going through these steps: 1- Open PLANNER 2- Hit the Magnifying Glass button on the bottom left. 3- choose Sun or Moon at Azimuth and Elevation. It can be the sun or moon. Just make sure you hit the option that is AT AZIMUTH AND ELEVATION. 4- Hit the AR button at the bottom of the screen to open AR. 5- Now inside AR from those steps you will see a cancel and done at the top. Does that help? Or still nothing? -Aaron
@PhotogAdventures
@PhotogAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
mohamed abdel-hady You should see a “Done” in EVERY AR session in the app except for the session you get from the NIGHT AR pill. So you must be in the Night AR pill. Make sure you are getting into the AR from the planner pill after you hit the magnifying glass button for the find tool. Let me know if this helps, Mohamed! Thanks for watching! 😃 -Aaron
