I drove a old Land Cruiser Prado in Iraq while on deployment there. There were a ton of them there. It ran, the ac worked, and it NEVER broke down. Best of all, it allowed us to "blend in" while traveling amongst the natives.

We had two 2004 Land Cruiser diesels with manual transmissions issued to our teams while I was there 2005-2007. Those things were bullet proof, and the A/C was nice. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it would be nice owning that Land Cruiser diesel today.

I love my Prado I’ve spent years looking for the right one in the right, as new condition, mine is thirty years old and is in the same showroom condition as my two year old Porsche 911, it’s a capable motor anywhere, an ugly ducking three door but man it draws more looks and has more people coming up to me making offers to buy it than the German sports car. This motor is just genius.

Some trivia: In the original novel by Michael Crichton, Toyota Land Cruisers were used as the tour vehicles in _Jurassic Park._ While they were replaced with Ford Explorers in the movie, the game _Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis_ retains them.

Hi James, I've had a KZJ78 for around 6 months here in New Zealand. Love it. A few worthwhile things to do to get better power from the 1KZ is: Better dump pipe (Downpipe) from the Turbo and a 3 inch exhaust, it improves the power greatly and helps keep temperatures lower in the engine. Next for me will be a Front Mount Intercooler, these two mods add around 30 to 50 HP, without any tuning. As soon as I drove the truck after the 3 inch exhaust was fitted, I could tell the difference. Much more power and better high speed cruising. There's a company here in New Zealand that makes the custom Dump pipes - KRAE 4x4 - they ship internationally. Enjoy.

Great video and review James. I couldn't agree with you more😁 I love my 1993 KZJ78W-PGT. I live in Malawi, and bought it here (same colour as yours) in Malawi in early 2023, it needed lots of work, and painstakingly rebuilt it, took body off chassis, checked and replaced suspension bits where necessary, resprayed pearl white, put all safari mods on it, roof rack, tent, dobinson's heavy duty bull bar, winch, redid sunroof, redid engine, infotainment plus plus. Remaining now the snorkel, and dobinson's 3" lift and 16" off road wheels. I love it. Will never part with it. A real classic car ...

As an owner of a KZJ71G-PET myself, I can tell you that the KZJ78 is in absolutely impeccable condition. I didn't skip any part of the video, and believe me when I say I know this car inside and out, as I've had to rebuild mine almost completely. You have every OEM part, sticker, and every little part of the interior looks great, even those that tend to break easily, which most would just let pass if they were missing or broken. I loved your video. Finding someone who appreciates the exact same things about this car is an absolute gem. I really hope you make a series about it or feature it regularly in your videos. Well-deserved like and subscribe.

I love this take on "The Best Land Cruiser" and why it's more about what's the best Land Cruiser for you. I have a 2006 100 series Land Cruiser that's halfway build and for me it's the perfect Land Cruiser. It can breeze through 1000 mile road trips getting to cool places, then do days to weeks off-road pounding on rocks and dirt trails, easy to camp and live out of, and even though I've put a ton of money into it. It's still cheaper than a 200 which makes me not hate myself for every scratch that gets put on it, and for a lot of what I'm actually driving most of the time, it's way more comfortable, quieter, roomier for my sleeping platform and much more powerful than an 80. I love pretty much every cruiser for what it's the best at, and there is a Cruiser for most people depending on your use and build. Pick what works for you and your budget and join the cult. It's by far the best car community I've ever been a part of.

You can import 70's from Australia, they have a diesel manual that's perfect and has zero infotainment or bullshit. Austalian 70 series quite literally hasn't change since they came out in 83. You can thank the mining industry there for that, pricy though since not many outside of the mining corps still buy them

That's the beauty. They don't have to. They did, so you can still get them for a fraction of the price of a new car. With all of the money you save, you can drop a motor in when the time comes and save that much more by driving it forever.

Love the land cruiser. I was issued one when I worked in Saudi arabia ( consultant for the Ministry defenses regarding the oil well damage ) . It was a great vehicle, spending Thursdays and Fridays exporting the century old desert village relics . I had to have a driver in the cities of jubail , Riyadh, and jeddah. I was at the Riyadh nov 13, 1995 . We didn't know it was al - Qaeda coming out party until years later .

Rode one with a friend who drove it like he stole it to make it on time to a business opening in another city 4 hours away. He turned a 4 hour ride into a 3 hour ride with the pedal to the metal. All I could do was hang on to the hand grip above the passenger door window for dear life as we sped through the highway avoiding traffic by sometimes overtaking on the shoulder of the road. I expected the top heavy land cruiser to roll over during the high speed approaches around a curb at least ten times. At some point during the drive, I kept hearing this beeping sound above the roar of the engine as he gunned it and asked him what the hell that sound was. His answer was:"Oh that's just the speedometer indicator alarm telling us we're going over 165 Kph limit." Almost peed myself during the drive.

You should talk to Skid Factory or something, I guarantee you could turn up the boost on that a little and it would still be dead reliable. It might even be better for it because you won't have to be going foot to the floor all the time just to keep up with traffic. If you can cut your acceleration times that means you're back to lighter throttle cruising sooner. Skid Factory can tell you what would be a safe level to go too and what you need. Aussies know their stuff.

Thanks for running up the price for the rest of us! I have an FJ62 and understand the things it does less well. Of course, they can be made into one of the best vehicles on the road. Throw a 80 series frame and drivetrain, an engine swap, more comfortable seats, sound insulation, a nice center console with cup holders, upgrade lighting all round, and just a few odds and ends pretty much does it. That's assuming the paint, glass, mirrors and bumpers are functional and cosmetically acceptable. I probably don't have to mention resealing the rain gutters. But a Prado you say.....hummmm, I'll give it some thought.
