Testing in a bench is not the same as testing in a real world scenario where you don't have advanced knowledge of the lock you are facing, you don't have time to study for weaknesses, you are under the pressure time, need to be quiet to avoid discovery, poor lighting, poor working conditions, etc. Anything is easy when you have all the time in the world, it's hardly the same as when you are working under real world conditions.

Great video! The reason the Medicos are near impossible to pick is the the tumblers and the teeth on the keys are angled as well as the tumblers so not only do the tumblers need to be at the shear line they also need to be at the correct angle to match the angled teeth. The reason the keys are extremely hard to duplicate are the same reasons above plus you need a special key machine to duplicate key. It would be near impossible to make these keys in your garage. Possible but not an amateur's endeavor. I think it would be a good idea to run some pewag chain through the wheels too if your wheel holes will allow a 1/2 chain through it. The other thing to know is all locks can and will be defeated by anyone with resolve and the right tools. So leave your trailers when you can in a place where power tools light and noise signatures will cause alarm. Locks are only meant to slow a thief down contrary to most folks belief systems.

The new lock core sounds nice, but i still have a problem with the puck being made of 303 stainless. Fact is it is easy to drill. Simply searching for the properties of 303 would reveal that its the most readily machined stainless available. I know that "locks are just a deterrent," but it would be nice if they used hardened steel like the other top brands.

From watching LPL I was first a bit disappointed in that they switched from packlock core to cobra although is seems you need a specialized tool to get into a tubular lock. Well that is what the tracker from t-mobile is for. I should be able to find mine if it gets taken. I bought mine for a camper and the battery should be left to trickle charge. Allowing my tracker to get power off the battery. Tracker only needs a low wattage USB. Thanks for the video.

@@jeffsadowski The Medco is a solid lock for sure. My issue with LPL is that he is doing everything on a stable bench, in well lit conditions, has time to look over the lock for weakness, has every tool at his disposal. While his work is really good info, it is not representative of the conditions thieves are working in. They are working on uneven ground where the lock is on the bottom side. They are likely working in poor lighting conditions. They are working under, time constraints and noise constraints so as not to tip anyone off. Unless they are staking out their target and knowing exactly what they are going to face, they most likely will not have the right tools on hand to counter every obstacle they will face. They are doing all of this while adrenaline is flowing and risk of getting caught is on their mind. I think these things need to factor in how well a lock will protect your valuables. I appreciate LPL but I think he needs to point these things out as part of his evaluation.

Loved the video I like to figure things out that lock is not available in my country but while watching a thought came into my head that would make it possible to steal any trailer with that system on it ,here goes a length of steel tube with a trailer hitch fixed to it inside diameter of the tube big enough to slide over the hitch lock with a but on top that you could tighten down on the existing lock then hitch it on and tow it away
@RoughRidersTV
@RoughRidersTV 4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, no lock is 100% effective. If they want it bad enough, they will find a way. I do use a wheel lock in combination with the hitch lock to prevent them from just dragging it off. If they really want it, they could bring a flatbed trailer and a winch and just drag it onto a trailer. However, the question is, is the average thief going to be prepared with the proper setup? Not likely as most thefts are crimes of opportunity...meaning it's a spur of the moment thing. So unless they are prepared with everything they possibly need, they are likely to move on to an easier target.

So people keep saying. Of course anything is possible when working from the comfort of a bench with plenty of light, plenty of time to study the lock for weaknesses. That is VASTLY different than working in a real world scenario under the pressures of being discovered, poor lighting, poor working conditions, etc. Let's see people do some real world testing instead of bench testing. LPL makes great videos and is a great resource from a purely technical perspective, but that is only part of the story, real world testing is important too, yet no one really wants to acknowledge it.
@Robert-fx3ng
@Robert-fx3ng 3 күн бұрын
@ fair enough. With it installed on a trailer, real world setting, it takes me 7 seconds to open it with a comb pick. This way of bypassing a lock has been around for almost 100 years. The manufacturer should know about it as well. At this point not fixing the manufacturer weakness could be argued as negligence. In no world would I call it the “best trailer lock”! There are lock manufacturers which openly run promotions to have the locksport community attempt to open their products. This is essentially free quality control. If there is a simple and easy way to over your security product that the engineers didn’t think about, fix it.

Try a Paclock UCS-9S lock instead. Ain't no way you're drilling or picking that puck. The body of the UCS-9S is 304 stainless, not 303, so even if you could get a drill to bite on the cone shape, it's FAR harder to drill. I use one of these with a Proven 2178 on my teardrop, and that trailer isn't moving. It's FAR superior to any Proven puck lock. Plus if you order the 2178 hitch lock from Proven with no puck lock it's $20 cheaper.

Thanks for the comment. This is a bit of a long answer but I try to provide info so those interested can find the product and purchase from whomever they choose. I made a decision early on not to participate in affiliate programs because I didn't want any company compensation to influence my opinions of the products I am reviewing. Along those same lines I generally don't add links because I didn't want people to feel like I was directing them to a source and that I might be compensated when they purchase. Basically, I want people to feel free to purchase from whomever they choose, find the best deal and that I am in no way making money from their purchase. If I like a product and I can negotiate a discount for viewers, great but doesn't meant its the best deal on the product. For me, I want to earn viewer's trust keep my integrity so I try to remain objective in my videos and just share my honest opinion of the good and bad. I have had numerous offers from companies for free products and asking me to do reviews as well as participate in affiliate programs and I always turn them down. In order to maintain my credibility, I only review products that I buy myself so viewers know that my opinions are genuine. I know that was a long answer to a short comment but I hope that helps provide more insight into my channel.

If you look on lockpickinglawyers videos, I believe that he can disable any of the locks that you referenced, in a few minutes or less. From what l've seen on KZbin, they can be disabled by about 30 seconds of drilling, or, just a few minutes to pick the lock. Imo, the only coupler lock that's worth $300+ is the Altor Icon, a 20# beast that would take a very LONG TIME to drill out, and can't be picked with any tool that you could buy. The others that secure the safety chains and have an aluminum or 303SS puck locks, are all bark and no bite imo. They'll protect you from someone that doesn't know what they're doing, but only slow a pro down, by about 3 minutes, if that. Just for the record, I have no association with Altor Icon, other than having purchased their product, and having high hopes for others, only to see and have them quickly dashed, by lock experts. No matter what one chooses, also securing your chains with any decent lock, a deterrent lock on your wheels, and putting down your jacks are your best bet, to be as "protected" as possible.
@RoughRidersTV

This comment has been made before by others. My biggest complaint about LPL is that he is picking locks in a benchtop environment and not real world. He has had plenty of time to examine the locks for weaknesses and plan out before he shoots his videos. He is working in a well lit environment, with every tool at his disposal. He is not under the pressure of getting caught, he doesn't have to worry about someone catching him in the act. In short, he has ideal conditions. I'm not saying his videos are bad at all as they provide a very clinical view of the locks. But working in an ideal setting is not the same as working in a real world environment where you have all sorts of conditions that hinder your ability to work quickly and quietly. You also have the emotional component of adrenaline flowing that impacts both decision making and steady hands. A lab environment NEVER equates to a real world environment, which I think is an important factor to be considered.

I would carry a small air compressor with me all the time. When I park the trailer I would let almost all the air out of all four tires just to the point where it wouldn't ruin the tires. Next time I come for the trailer I'll just air the tires up and leave, I doubt that a thief would want to go through all that and he can't haul it with almost flat tires. Or, put blocks under the axles and let all the air out of all 4 tires. The thief would think he has to jack up the trailer and remove the blocks. When he lowered the trailer all 4 tires are completely flat. Take about taking the wind out of someone's sails, especially after all that work and time spent.

The thieves can bring their own chains
@RoughRidersTV
@RoughRidersTV 2 жыл бұрын
True and as I have repeatedly said, most crimes are crimes of opportunity. This means they happen on the spur of the moment, not master planned events like Ocean 11. Thieves would have to know what obstacles they are going to face in advance and plan for those. So in my case, they would have to know they would need chains, they would have to know they would have a wheel lock to deal with...they would have to know they have locking lugs to deal with, they would have to plan for the locked hitch. So how likely is a thief going to know all of that in advance and have the necessary solution ready to go? Not likely. Every lock can be bypassed with enough planning and the right equipment but given that statistics have repeatedly shown that thefts are crimes of opportunity, when thieves face obstacles, they will often move on to easier targets. That is the goal of every lock...make it hard enough that they look for something easier.

I've seen that video as well. First, it's easy to do when you have the puck in your hands, entirely familiar with it and can measure things out and put the drill exactly where you need it on a bench setting. It's another thing entirely to come across this in the field and be able to know before hand what would be required. On the aluminum lock he drilled through, the latch mechanism was on the front and was spring loaded. Therefore, drilling in the right spot (not easy to find in the first place), he could push in the latch to bypass the lock. With this version, the latch is on the back so no way to drill and get to it. It is also operates like a deadbolt so it's not spring loaded. I've seen that video. It's not the same lock as I am showing here. The core is completely different. Furthermore, drilling on a bench is not the same as drilling in the field in real world conditions. When you have time to study a lock, take measurements and setup in a nice stable environment, you can do things that are not easily accomplished under real world conditions.

These are not my locks, I'm just using one to secure my trailer. I have seen his videos and yes, a trained locksmith working on a bench can open it. However, the average thief is not a trained locksmith nor working on a bench. With that said, I would ask you if you lock your door when you leave your house? Do you lock your car when parked? If yes, why? Because it's a deterrent, lock EVERY lock is... a determined thief with enough time, tools and patience can bypass any lock. The entire point of a lock is to deter theft, not prevent it under every circumstance.

Lock picking lawyer disagrees. Plus, they bring their own chains and hook it up. Wheel locks are really the way to stop it, or at least significantly slow it down I guess. The puck lock is stupid from them. Lock picking lawyer says you can find much better from elsewhere.

Well, he is certainly entitled to his opinion. I use both wheel and hitch locks. No lock is ever 100% effective and every lock on the planet can be bypassed with enough time and preparation. However, the purpose of locks are to deter potential thieves. I honestly doubt that all thieves run around with enough chain in their setup in the off chance they will need them. I stand by my statement that this is one of the best locks on the market and the improvements only make it better.

I'm scared using their locks.....all it takes is a 5 mins with a portable plasma cutter cut all ur locks real fast and gone with ur tear drip
@RoughRidersTV
@RoughRidersTV 2 жыл бұрын
How many thieves carry a portable plasma cutter? My guess is not many. Statistically speaking, theft is a crime of opportunity. These are not organized, well planned and executed operations...they are some jerk driving by, seeing a trailer and trying to steal it. They don't do long surveillance, scope out the types of locks they will face and then acquire the appropriate tools. It's a guy driving around with hammer, hack saw or crowbar in his truck that sees an opportunity for a quick hit and run.

@@pineapplesmash6678 I'm not saying well planned thefts don't occur, it's just that statistics show that the vast majority of theft are opportunistic and not planned. There isn't a lock on the planet that will stop every theft. The goal is to make it hard on the thief so that they move along to easier targets. This lock is not fool proof but it does deter the opportunistic thief. It encourages them to drive on down the road to look for an easier target. You can't just knock this off with a sledge, you can't hack it off or pry it off...it takes some real effort and you are likely going to make a lot of noise doing it. The longer they have to spend trying to defeat the lock, the greater their risk of getting caught. It's these things that make them pass on by and look for a trailer not as well secured.

Lockpickinglawyer has a video on this, 15 seconds drilling the face (not core) and your in. Wish they sold this without their shitty puck. They should sell just the hasp (without lock) for around $100.

First, lock picking lawyer was working with an old, proto design. and not the current lock. 2nd, he was working in a nice, well lit space, with a nice, flat work bench...that is nowhere near reality of working under the cover of darkness, on uneven ground where you do have a work bench to place the lock in exactly the right position for drilling. 3rd, he had plenty of time to study the lock and look for exploits...again, not reality where a thief finds this lock on a trailer, had no time to study it and figure out how to defeat it all while trying to work quickly/quietly under the stress of getting caught. So, let's distinguish between trying to defeat a lock under real world conditions and the comfort of a work bench before we suggest the lock is easy to defeat. I still say this is one of the best locks on the market.

Have not seen their wheel boot. I have their wheel lock and it goes through the rim so you just can't remove the wheel. However, it only works on trailers with a leaf spring suspension. It won't work on my trailer with a torsion axle and trailer brakes.
