I have always used ultralight gear , but after losing some large trout I have changed things a bit. I now use a 6'8" light med rod , not really an ultralight . A 2000 Carbon X reel with 10 lb braid and a 6 lb leader. The braid honestly shoots out of the rod and its very sensitive. I needed this video just to know that I'm not the only one doing this. Even though it works for me. This setup is good for those smaller crankbaits also.

Thanks for sharing this. When I started into trout fishing I bought ultralight first, because that's what the internet said to do. Then I bought light-power rod on a whim. I use the light rod more often now because it seems I can actually have some direction over my retrieve in a stiff current. Currently shopping medium-light rods now.

I use 5’ to 7’ ultra light rods for trout and rarely get skunked but you got me thinking about casting my trout lures using my bass rods for extra distance especially when there’s a lot of people fishing from the shore. I will give it a try when I head back to the Sierras for trout fishing.

I truly believe that you can cast farther and more accurate with a stiffer longer rod. Even on small streams I use a medium or medium light and always over 6’

I also use a 6 x 6 med lite ugly stick on most creeks with a Penn spin cast reel. Some times I have to break out the ultra lite due to the tree over hang the streams. I also use the barrel swivel on 8 lb Flor carbon line. I generally use Panther Martin and rooster tail spinners.

That’s the best setup right there! Able to make long accurate casts.

Love fishing in Little Juniata. It's home turf. Live right down the street from it.

Great setup, looks very similar to mine I think the only difference besides slight pole weight is I use 10 pound mono, but love those black and yellow spinner and I should try that swivel!

The swivel is a big game changer for line twist

So what pound/type/brand of mono or braided line should I use for creek/river/stream fishing cause I'd like to have a rod for fly fishing and one for artificial fishing is there a method to use either one at once?
@thebesthunter699 ай бұрын
I don’t have any advice of using either one at once. But I like 15 pound braid and 10 pound fluorocarbon. Brand is unimportant to me.
@escapetherace19439 ай бұрын
I second 15 pound braid. I'd suggest hi-viz so you can see your line but you can use any color, then tie a 10 pound fluoro like this guy does, or do that or a 15 pound fluoro bumper, then a swivel, and then a leader in a lighter line if you want. I was throwing spinners off my salmon rig which was 30 pound braid I tied several feet of 15 lb fluoro too, then I was using a 4 lb leader off that... I honestly recommend 6 lb leaders though the 2-4 pound is weak and I get mad losing expensive spinners

Anything medium action and lighter is fine for trout. The rod doesn’t do the catching you do!
@kenr10672 жыл бұрын
I use a.6'6" medium rod also. I thought I wasn the only one. Lol
@thebesthunter692 жыл бұрын
Definitely not! I just think the flimsy ultralights are over rated for trout.

Using 8ft troat rod and I would no way consider that been long rod. But suppose just depends were your fishing.

The brand is a Berkeley. Found it at bass pro and I really like it.
