Vaush saying he wants Superman to be a Boy Scout is something I agree with. The whole thing that makes Superman interesting is that even though he has all this power, he chooses to focus on the little things and not using that power to hurt others unless absolutely necessary.

@@michaelraymon111 Commenter is 100% correct, the appeal of Superman is the dichotomy between his godlike power yet humble character. It’s not just that he’s a normal guy, he’s a remarkably considerate and kind person even when he’s not acting as Superman. (Lois sees him as a pushover when Clark but a Heracles when Superman even though he’s the same person) in other words, a bit of a Boy Scout.

I describe my perfect Superman film as feeling kinda like a Studio Ghibli vibe. I don't want there to be a big threat, I don't want the traditional superhero formula, I just want him to meander for 2 hours doing good. Talking people off ledges, saving cats from trees, offering aid in areas experiencing natural disasters, etc.

I remember years ago watching a video by a trans man about the masculinity crisis and he cited Superman as the ideal masculine role model since he doesn't rely on aggression or superiority to be masculine, he's a caring guy who uses his strength to protect others, isn't afraid to show emotion, and is still extremely masculine and inspiring. Vaush, from my heart of hearts, I mean this: We NEED more Justice League/Unlimited media discussion from you. That show was so incredibly good and your analysis of it just brings out the best from it. Thank you for a good discussion! A quick note on the Superman vs Captain Marvel episode: at the very end Lex Luthor is seen popping champagne with Amanda Waller (a powerful agent of the US government), celebrating the ruination of Superman's public image. At the end of it all, the damage is done because two people (Supes and Marvel) who are both *good* were made to fight each other in a way that ultimately just served the evil billionaire and the US gov.

Superman: The Animated Series remains the best iteration of the character. Clark is simply a good man who wants to help people with his extraordinary powers. He isn't a "savior" figure. He does not seek out adulation or "followers", he wants humanity to be better, but he tries to show it through example, not by proselytizing to them.

I gave this take on Twitter and was shouted down so hard by Snyder fans. Thing is, I actually liked the Snyder Superman, he’s just not what I *want* from Superman. He should be the big blue boy scout. Seeing him as a conflicted, dour loner was an interesting take, and Cavill was a good Superman, but he was far from my ideal Superman. The Bruce Timm DCAU had the best interpretation of all the characters in a tv/movie media that has existed so far. Young Justice was dope too. And, yes, JLU’s first episode has Batman forcibly recruiting a self-described “lefty” with the specific intent that he be there to keep an eye on them and keep them honest.
@trianglemoebius
@trianglemoebius Жыл бұрын
I'd argue that the "darker superman" take was good when it was starting, but by the time of Snyder the "superheros... but edgy" was already so overdone as to ruin that. Granted, it can still be done *well*, but only by adding some new layer of interest to it (eg, Invincible). Just going, as I said before, "Superheroes... but edgy" and nothing on top of that is basically just "every superhero movie" at this point.

The thing about Superman feeling "wrong" in JLU is that it's intentional as it's meant to show the audience that he has lost his way as his behaviour continues to escalate until he finally realises that he's becoming Lord Superman from the Justice Lords. The best Superman and will always be Superman from "Whatever Happened to Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" which was later adapted into Superman vs the Elite as it shows that Superman is the boy scout by choice to inspire people to dream and when he goes all-out he shows that in how people come to fear him. The best line in "Superman vs the Elite" was the reply to, "Is that...Superman?" "Not anymore." And that's such a powerful reply that encapsulates that Superman is a symbol instead of a man and that he is it by choice because he knows that people need it, which is so good. I really wish any live-action adaptation would lean into this, instead of, the Schnyder Superman that missed the mark by a lightyear, give or take a few astronomical units.

I forgot who made the argument, but someone compared Captain America and Superman in the sense that they're both boy scouts, in the context of Marvel getting that dead on with Cap, while DC has fumbled because they handed the keys to the DCEU over to a guy who's vision of Superman was cynical and randian, advised by his parents to maybe not save people and to only do right if he felt like it. Ma Kent even offers the very selfish advice: "You don't owe this world a thing," as if Clark did not grow up in the community around him and benefit from it.

The Justice League cartoon's version of evil Superman is utterly brilliant. How do you get Superman to abandon his faith in the inherent goodness of humanity? Have them choose Lex Luthor, the man who in that reality killed the Flash, as their leader. It's the same reason why, in JL season 2, he is fine with letting Apokolyps get assimilated by Brainiac and allowing all the civilians of that planet to die. Because during the Superman finale, when Darkseid was defeated and the citizens of Apokolyps had freedom in their grasp... they chose tyranny. They chose to heal Darkseid, rather than fight for their own freedom. That was what it took to convince Superman they were a lost cause.

the interesting thing about the justice lords, is based off the fact that LEX became the President and caused the death of Wally (flash). Flash is considered the anchor for alot of empathy in this universe. So the critique of Superman's actions are unique because its separate from the in-show characters and us as the audience
@dragonicdoom3772
@dragonicdoom3772 11 ай бұрын
This is why I think Lex is the perfect nemesis for Superman. He represents a problem Superman can't punch: systemic issues. In the Justice Lords episode Lex even points this out: Superman is his greatest accomplice because he never kills Lex which means Lex is able to use his wealth and the corrupt justice system to get out of jail each and every time. JLU Season 1 does a great job of highlighting how Superman's morals and heroism can be used against him. He is so focussed on punching villains and saving people that he struggles with tackling the systemic issues that cause many of the crises that he stops. His stubbornness and steadfast moral code makes it nearly impossible for him to look at the big picture if it takes his attention away from helping people in the moment.

Honestly, I don't mind when they portray Superman as having the power go to his head, they just have to do it RIGHT. The people making these don't seem to realise that power going to one's isn't always just "they turn into fascists", and there are various ways it can go. The example Vaush gave, with Superman vs. Shazam, was power going to Superman's head. Just not in a way that resulted in him changing his primary colour to a more edge shade then choosing reactionaryism and genocide.

Superman fundamentally doesn't work if the writer thinks of his boy-scoutishness as a problem to overcome, instead of an asset to be utilized. The Marvel film makers understood this about Captain America; that he's not a 'cool' character, he's a boy scout -- he's lame. The way to make him work is to embrace his inherent lameness and use it as a source of comedy and drama. They also understood this in Superman the Movie (1978), in which the main obstacle for Superman to overcome was the cynicism of the world around him, and making people believe in him who are predisposed to think that he's too good to be true. Zack Snyder's Superman sucked because he thinks comics peaked in the 90's. He shouldn't be making DCEU movies; he should be adapting Spawn, or Witchblade, or directing the Venom movies.

Superman origin stories have been done to depth. You want to reboot him? OK, fine, but why not as an older veteran adult. These filmmakers know he has a teenage son who he is training to take his place in the comics right? Superman as a family man as so much fresh potential than year one newb Supes that we've seen for the hundredth time

Justice league season one Superman isn’t really my favorite iteration of Superman but that’s a Superman that has seen and been through everything that happened in the animated series like being taken over and the crossovers with Batman.

Christopher Reeve and Tom Welling (as proto-Superboy) came closest to this ideal! Yes! Superman IS a Boy Scoutt! Brandon Routh was meh and Tyler Hoechlin, though very good acting the part in Superman and Lois (though Bitsy Tulloch, Erica Durance and Margot Kidder are the Holy Trinity of Lois Lanes!) looks too different from the comics version. Cavill's looks were perfect, but Zack Snyder made him too dark. A shame he does not get to play a brighter, more lovable Superman as Cavill had hoped. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that Gunn will be able to save the DCU. Nonetheless, I hope he gets Austin Butler, David Corenswet or Jacob Eordi and NOT Logan Lerman or miles Tel.ler (who so do not look the partt - like Nicholas Cage!) to play his Superman. better yet, an unknown like Reeves and Welling who made the role their own.

Gunn works when the character is pretty much a blank slate and the audience isn't expecting him to stay true to the character. And I hate all this talk of him loving the comics. If he actually gave af about the comics he would bring on those writers and artists to work on the projects and give them their due credit.

In my opinion, Superman must see an intelligent and vicious opponent who will harm him. In the 1978 Superman film, Luthor was an interesting opponent even if in my opinion a little too caricatured. In the Smalville series, members of the Luthor family were interesting adversaries. So I think we need an intelligent opponent who will know how to trap Superman. And the Kryptonite blow that weakens him I find that a bit stupid. Why wouldn't he be allergic to an earthly element for example? Something rare but very present on earth and which would be poison for him. And then why doesn't Superman use Kyryptonian technology to help humanity? Help it to pollute less, for example. I think there are a lot of things to do with this character but it takes talent, ambition and imagination to highlight him.

His take on Superman is excellent but I stopped short on liking the video and saying its a good media take because then he confidently said most Graphic Novel and Grpajic Novel spin offs are crap and he's watched a great deal of them. Vaush obviously has a strong liking and memory of DCAU lore but they are so beloved that that hardly makes him an expert.

The fact that they are bringing in writers who actually enjoy the characters for the new attempt has me optimistic! But absolutely, best superman is boyscout Clark Kent. Ok now I need to watch Justice League Unlimited Season 1. Yeah Clark going full villain because Lois dies is Snyder treating the audience like r***ards. Yeah fallible people do that, but most people wouldn't bring the world to its knees over it, and Clark is supposed to be better than that, a boy scout, like Vaush says, not a jealous biblical God, or a Greek asshole Deity. Goddamnit Snyder.
