We've really gone to town on Monica's rear axel. It probably didn't look this good leaving the factory! We rebuild the back end after refurbing all the components and replacing all the worn out seals, brake lines and bearings. Come see how it looks....it's stunning!

Nothing like a quick axle fart to get you going in the morning. That's a good looking axle I might add.

Very nice job. I'll tell you if you let me. Apply a little grease to the brake nuts. In the long run it will make disassembly easier, raally ;) Very very good job, Admiration! Greetings from Poland

Tip for the Copper-Nickle (Kunifer) pipe. If you anneal it first, it bends as easy as plain Copper, which means you can often hand form bends around a suitable radius object. Heat to red with a MAP gas torch, or Oxyacetlene (propane probably won't do it) and allow to cool or quench (makes no difference to harness). It will reharden as it bends, so if the bend is wrong, you may want to reanneal. I used the technique to completely straighten and rebend a set of power steering pipes that had been badly hand formed.

Thanks for the tip! Lucky we have the tools for forming but that could be handy for people who don't.
@Parknest

Lewis, the brake pipes are Cunifer. The name comes from the chemical symbols for copper (CU), nickel (NI) and iron (FE) from which the pipe is made. Good to see the rear axle taking shape.

When working with brake shoes, I have discovered that a large ty-rap or hose clamp around the brake shoes saves a lot of hassle. They will then no longer jump away when you are working with the spring.

Yep, I go for hours without eating... you'd never know looking at me 🤣 I forgot just how rusty Monica was! I'm in the middle of chopping out the tunnel on Valerie... yes I know I've done things the wrong way around!! All has to come up for prop clearance as it's so low. Front above the gearbox is in. 😁 4 link kit & watts linkage kit to go in next... original arms point downwards from the axle to the shell, so not good. Cheers. Leigh. PS: Monica has a nice rear end 🤣🤣 PPS: Spray the disc bells with cold galvanising aerosol... it keeps them looking good for ages.

Found you through the Hubnut Crew, and very fond of ‘proper’ cars that don’t need a Computer and a PhD to service and repair 😅Ooh shiny axle! 😁 - and I believe the brake pipe is called Kunifer - copper & cupronickel alloy. Seems like it’s way better than pure copper too 👍
@Zeem4

Hey Lewis, top job as always. Got to comment. I have been tinkering with cars for 50 years now and have fitted loads of copper brake pipes. I don't know of any failing, nor do I know anyone else who knows of any failing. Personally, I think it is a bit of scaremongering. With something as important as braking, would copper pipe be allowed to be sold if there was even the remotest chance of it failing?
@WhitelandRestorations
@WhitelandRestorations Жыл бұрын
We'd always used copper too until I read somewhere about them failing. Couldn't shake the feeling of brake anxiety so had to change what material we use.

Look brilliant! Love the volvo. Maybe stupid question but why is the interior spray painted apart from the exterior? Both need the same colour, don't they?
@WhitelandRestorations
@WhitelandRestorations Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the inside of the car? We remove any paint from the inside and it's all covered with trim and carpets so no need to change the colour internally. It's a light blue inside anyway, if it was red or black we would have sprayed inside too.

there is something wrong in your assembly, there is absolutely no reason to shorten the half axles, they should return from where they came without touch up. The bearing is a self contained and the tolerance is within tenths of a thou anfd there is no block in the center of the ring carrier comestically, your job is superb.
@Iain240

The reason is that they fitted a g80 diff from a 940. You always have to shave 6mm or so off the driver's side shaft when fitting a g80 in a 240.
@WhitelandRestorations
@WhitelandRestorations Жыл бұрын
Hi Jacques, as Iain said we have replaced the standard diff with a G80 locker diff which requires one of the half shafts to be shortened 6mm. You can see us doing the swap in the last episode.
