Every time you see a travel show or brochure concerning Canada, it is always centred on Toronto, Montreal or the Rockies. The Atlantic provinces are always under-represented so well done for making such a great series of videos. The fact that people hardly ever mention the Atlantic coast makes it very appealing for a visit soon.

Those pairs of red chairs can be found right across the Trans Canada Trail system. They were placed at spots that offer an exceptionally beautiful viewing point, inviting the hiker to take a peaceful little rest and just soak in the scenic view! The chairs were installed by the Government of Canada in 2017 as part of the Canada Sesquicentennial Celebrations (150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada as a nation on July 1, 1867). I'm sure people have already said that Quidi Vidi is pronounced Kiddy Viddy. In 1995 I walked most of the same trail with my dad, who is now gone, + although I was totally unprepared for what I'd see, it was 1 of the best experiences in my whole life! It's nothing short of spectacular! Especially to a prairie girl! I loved St. John's + the entire east coast but that walk is the very best thing we saw. NO video could ever show how very literally breathtaking it is to see that vista of the ocean begin to open up before you, just as you pass by the WW2 battlements on the opposite side. It was an emotional experience that I wasn't at all prepared for, so now I know what the word breathtaking really means! My most treasured pictures are from then, but we didn't know that it's just a sort jaunt down the other side into Quidi Vidi, or of course we would have done that too, instead of walking down the road to the modern hotel, and paying a fortune for tiny frozen lobster tails. We had missed lobster season, and I still don't know exactly when that is. We found many wonderful bars to go to, and since Newfies are by far the friendliest people in Canada, we were welcomed everywhere like family. Thank you so much for helping me relive that wonderful day. I literally cried, and still am crying. I love your accents, and I hope to visit Ireland some day. All the best to you both, and to all of your loved ones. ❤❤❤

Beautiful place! I'm from Ireland and it reminds me very much of the west coast with the craggy cliffs and headlands and the magnificent North Atlantic rolling in or thundering in depending on the weather. And I'm sure Steve, it also reminds you of the western isles of Scotland...on a sunny day of course which are, as you are well aware, just as rare over this side of the pond as they are in Newfoundland! I also find it amazing that the Newfies who are of Irish descent still retain a strong Irish accent (with a slight North American twang) 200 years or so since their ancestors first landed there! It shows how remote the place is from the North American mainland. Great scenery and walks, very friendly locals, good food, drink with great fiddle music and craic to be had in the many pubs there. A home from home on the other side of the Atlantic eh? Definitely on my bucket list of places to visit.

Your and Alicja's series of videos about your trip to and from Newfoundland, and your time there, is just wonderful! I plan on watching it more than once. When I was based at JFK and SEA as a Pan Am cabin crew member, I used to always hope for a refueling stop or other diversion to the Gander (or Glasgow) airport. It never happened...we always had enough fuel and landed without issue where we were supposed to. ... I do have one question: have you seen any alive Newfoundland dogs (aka Newfies)? They are so amazing, especially around children or in the water.

Awesome episode, beautiful Newfoundland. I think Steve is a bit shy. For bolder travelers: if you are curious about something (cod jigging, fish and brewis, how to pronounce "Quidi Vidi") - just ask a local! There are exceptions, but most folks there are super friendly, and more than eager to talk about local culture. It's not just about knowledge, it will lead to new experiences. A day of fun out on the water (cod jigging.) A great traditional meal (fish and brewis.) A fun controversy (there are multiple opinions, each with their own rationale, on how to say Quidi Vidi.)

A great hike. It brought back many memories of scrambling up, down and around Signal Hill sixty years ago. It's amazing how things have changed in what were among the "poorer" areas of the city back then, like the Battery and Quidi Vidi. Back then, we referred to Quidi Vidi as "The Gut" though mostly our visits down there was to Tucker's fishing stage which was owned by the father of a couple of the kids who were in our group. The Tucker premises became the crafts centre where Alicja bought the necklace. Quite a change to a building that was once used to house fishing gear and for salting cod.

Nice video! It's been years since I've done that hike; trying to get myself in good enough shape to tackle it again this year. The Fluvarium is a place where you can see under the river, and the activities that happen in the underwater environment. Hello Steve, another nice video, thank you. Jigging is a fishing technique when you drop your line (most of the time a hand line) and haul it back a few inches then drop it again repeatedly. Usually, you use a lure such as a red/orange or yellow spoon to attract the fish. I did a lot of jigging through ice holes in Baffin Island for arctic char. So they must have had a fishing contest, and you should have entered!
