I actually had a very sadistic way of getting information from a npc. I'm a phoenix sorcerer ua and a paladin, I cut the guys limbs off and used my phoenix ability to burn the wounds and cauterising the lost limbs that way they don't bleed out, I asked them questions and if I felt I didn't like an answer I would just peel off the skin I just burned and reapplied the cauterize immediately, I also used lay on hands to ensure he stays awake and at 1 HP to ensure he understands that I had his life in my hands. I did this for about a day in game time and I managed to get the information I needed, I ended up killing the guy because of background reasons. My character has now been officially labeled as the sadist of the group

Civilian had to move underground (kind of like fallout) to survive, the bunker my family was in turned into a research facility and and well after killing my parents and forcing my child character to go into all that suffering pretty sure I'm justified in getting a little sadistic with them

What's even more evil is to just combine Zone of Truth and torture Torture IRL is ineffective because people will say literally anything to make it stop, but ZoT makes lying impossible They could just not answer, but then they get tortured until they do They could make the save, except the caster knows if they succeed, and as long as they stay within the radius, they have to make the save _every single turn_ until they fail or the spell ends (the spell lasts 10 mintues, and it's level 2, very easy to recast if needed)

Query Soul. You ask the soul a question (no action required) and receive a brief telepathic answer, which you can understand regardless of the language used. In the first DND game I ever played, another player in our group played an evil necromancer who liked to spend his downtime murdering townspeople in secret. The very next town we arrived in, a noc cleric of Tyr sensed the evil within him and the guards arrested him right there at the gates. The DM explained that the cleric tied him to a kind of wheeled dolly, cast Zone of Truth, and wheeled him in and out of the circle until he finally failed his save (the spell says the caster knows if you save or not.) Of course, the spell make you tell the truth but does not force you to speak, so he was straight up tortured until he started talking. He couldn't help but confess everything and he was scheduled for execution the following morning.

I find myself using the Zone of Truth spell far more as a DM than I do as a player. It’s only a second level spell, so I think it’s perfectly reasonable for any major city to have clerics capable of casting it. Because of this, any time there’s a trial of something serious like murder a cleric is summoned to cast the spell on all the witnesses. If you don’t intentionally fail the save or if you refuse to speak, it is assumed that you have something to hide. While this system has done wonders for my players rampant murder hoboing, it also leads to some interesting situations where bad guys have been put on trial.

Some issues with Soul Cage: * 6th level spell, not available until level 11 at the earliest, and even then is an expensive resource * only gets you semi-reliable answers (yes, the creature must answer you truthfully and to the best of its ability, but also "The answer is no more than a sentence or two and might be cryptic") * limit of 6 questions per cast * only affects humanoids, all other creature types are completely immune * forces you to kill the victim, when you might for various reasons consider it preferable to keep them alive; not to mention it makes re-casting the spell for another 6 questions impossible My interrogation spell of choice is Detect Thoughts. 2nd level spell, semi-reliable answers depending on whether the victim has been trained to recognize their surface thoughts are being read or not, can be cast repeatedly if unsatisfied with the initial results, allows as many questions per casting as you can fit into 1 minute duration, no saving throw against surface thought reading, allows you to keep the victim alive if you wish. I'm surprised Detect Thoughts didn't merit a mention in your list of other spell options. Soul Cage is definitely still a good tool to have in your kit in the rare cases when Detect Thoughts fails though, as long as the target is a humanoid.

Zone of Truth does just work 100% of the time because it has a 10 minute non conc duration and while each person only needs to fail the save once they make saves every single round and you know the moment when they fail the save. Just let them cook in the zone of truth until they fail and start asking questions then. They still can be cryptic though or just not answer so not foolproof but it works and is lower level non-soul stealing too

I ran a character who was a warforged soldier. He had a nearly foolproof way of getting any information from enemies. Torture. He would beat them and revive them repeatedly, usually for hours. The other ranger player with wisdom so high he could be mistaken for Oogway, would analyze his facial expressions to see if he was lying. If he was lying. The war forged beat the crap out of him. If he told the truth, he would heal him and give him some money (Gold Pieces). Eventually, a new method was introduced and the group managed to befriend a Nothic, who could tell us our enemy's secrets. Then one of us got a mind-reading ability, sorting us out perfectly. We still sometimes beat up enemies for info just to make sure you know.

In a recent dnd session playing as a blade singer wizard equipped with an awakened Silken Spite, we went up against a wizard with a bunch of minions on a long street. I was back about 60 feet because I had rp reasons not to aid an npc in the fight, and the wizard saw me and teleported him and a few of the minions right behind me. I then cast steel wind strike, bringing the minions to very low hit points and causing the Silken Spite’s poison to hit the wizard. The rapier’s poison is a dc 15 constitution save to avoid being poisoned for 1 hour, but if you fail by 5 or more (which the wizard did) you’re unconscious during the poison or until you take damage or someone uses their action to shake you awake. So I tied him up, stripped him of his magical equipment like spell books, wands, etc. and after the rest of the minions were defeated I wanted to interrogate him because we didn’t know who sent him after us. We sat him up and I stabbed my rapier through his foot because damage wakes him up. I used that to cause pain while interrogating (and honestly this probably counts on torturing) him. If he refused to answer I’d poison the blade, he’d fail the save and fall unconscious, then I’d twist the sword still in his foot to wake him back up. He failed his con save many times, but we got the information out of him eventually…

Fun fact. The healing skill can also be used to torture... And so beware of a healer with... gray areas of ends justify the means who will use zone of truth and then force you to speak anyways.

Spam suggestion “speak” + zone of truth or a truth potion, that’s how my players did it. Thank goodness too, the alternative was waterboarding with the truth potion.

Easier solution, and cheaper in terms of spell slots: Suggestion. Suggest the target cooperates and speaks the truth until you part ways. If it fails the save, it will try to pursue the suggestion to the best of its abilities.

If you’re not too keen on using a 6th level spell either there’s always Zone of Truth and command spell (saying “Divulge”). But if we’re talking mechanically Charm person could be also just as effective.

Or you could just use Detect Thoughts to read their surface level thoughts ( the truth before they lies) as you question them. Better yet, unless you try to read more than surface level thoughts there is no save. Also it's only a second level spell.

This is exactly what my party and I did our last session. I use mind sliver first for the subtraction of the d4 on the save, then detect thoughts as others in my party asked questions and did some intimidation.

Even better solution, just keep doing enough damage to keep him as close to death as possible, or, have the Cleric or anyone with Cure Wounds on hand ready their spell to be cast the second this guy goes down at all, so it's a never-ending cycle of death and being brought back, only stopping when the Cleric runs out of slots or the guy talks. Either way, it's a fun way for the Artificer to test out new inventions. Like the Throngler.

Zone of truth is however a troublesome spell.... It's at the start of each turn they make the save, and it doesn't have the "if a creature makes the save they're immune for 24h" line that some such spells have, so to completely save against Zone of Truth is about 100 saves. So in most cases it's more about how much time you'll have for questions after they finally fail their save.
