I love the Eagle Creek brand. Strong, durable, water-resistant, feather light. I have used these mainly for snow holidays packing jackets, pants, beanies, gloves and anything poofy. Sea to Summit another breath brand too especially for their lightweight padded electronics cubes.

Yes! Although Eagle Creek changed hands a few years ago, and their luggage (which I loved) got pulled. They've since released a new luggage line, which I haven't tried. Their packing cubes are KILLER though. And Sea to Summit makes so much great stuff! I'm particularly in love with their toiletry bag - super light, strong, and practical.

Super tips and videos Nora! I consider myself a pretty good packer but you always show me something new! I always carry ziploc bags but never thought of that laundry idea! Something I never travel without is a roll of electrical tape. It’s stretch, reusable, and waterproof. I use it on the tops of all my liquids - wrap around the top, stretching as you go, for a perfect seal. Removable and restickable! Recently I used a strip to tape a face mask on to the blinds that kept tapping on the window frame with every slight breeze - worked perfectly to stop the annoying sound!

I have a 22" Eagle Creek roller bag that has detachable backpack straps that I love. It was pricey but worth every penny. Super light weight but sturdy with nice lockable zippers. I keep a garbage bag in the strap pocket JUST in case I have to ramp check it - the whole bag goes into the garbage bag and stays clean - sorry baggage handlers but those cargo holds are dirty. Recently purchased an Osprey Daylite Plus backpack as my personal item and am quite pleased.

I got a small knack pack for Christmas and just used it for the first time. It is unbelievable. The size fits under almost all airplane seats. It fit most of my clothes for a week and you can unexpand it when you get there and use it as a small backpack. It’s great.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
I have the medium-sized Knack pack, and it's fantastic. When fully expanded and filled it's a bit too large to fit under the seat, but I love having the freedom to get a few things along the way and not worry that I don't have any space. Worst case scenario I expand the Knack bag and put it in the overhead bin, and I can check my carry on suitcase.

There is one more very good use for small ziplock bags, storing different currencies. If you travel to countries where the currency is different from your home currency you can store the different leftovers in small ziplock bags for next time. So you do not end up with a mixture of Euro, Swiss franc, Czech Koruna, etc which you have to sort out the next time you travel. Even if you use your cards most of the time you will need some local currencies for certain places, lockers, public toilets, etc.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 11 ай бұрын
Great tip! I try to spend all my currency before I leave a country (especially if I'm not 100% sure I'll return), but sometimes I'm caught out without some change when I need it.

Nice suggestions once again - here's one to consider, never bring those Hydroflasks, Yeti, or Kleen Kanteen - they take up a good amount of room when you stick in the seat pocket in front of your seat - try using a narrow flask, it allows extra leg room and every extra inch helps.

Thank you so much for sharing you knowledge with us. I am going on a cruise, what would you advice I take as I do not want to over pack. 👍🤗
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
It's difficult not to overpack for cruises since lots of people like to bring multiple dressy outfits for the dinners! Those alone will take up a lot of space. So if you don't want to overpack, pay attention to bringing items that can be used in multiple scenarios. For example, perhaps you bring one nice black dress and accessorize it differently on different days/nights.

The Segsac seems rather gimmicky. For instance, if you don’t have enough clothes to justify the extra bulk, weight and shape. Speaking of shape, round isn’t good use of space. Plus, you have to open the entire thing just to get one item out. In opinion of non-pro traveler, the compression packing cubes in various sizes, seem a lot more efficient to use. Regarding the cord ties, those are really bulky (thick). Better to use twist ties, and simply coil (not wrap) to prevent loss around the cable when cable is in use. Or, they make very thin (not to be confused with width) hook & loop individual cable ties or on a roll. Regarding width, you don't need more than 1/2".
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Күн бұрын
On the contrary, the Segsac (formerly hoboroll) is my #1 fav packing tool! The material is the super thin ultralight Ultrasil ripstop that is as light and thin as it gets. And the round shape works great for socks, underwear, bathing suits, scarves, and other smaller items. It closes up and compresses down on travel days, and then accessing it is the best part - with the separate segments inside, all my little bits are completely organized! I use it 100% of the time I travel, every single day to keep everything organized. It just goes into the drawer and I’m done; packing and unpacking is a breeze! I keep one side closed and the other side open and I have easy access to everything. Sadly, they’ve been sold out for quite some time now; the founders told me they are redesigning and will relaunch it hopefully this year. I stay tuned. It’s the one packing tool that has come with me on every single trip for 12+ years. Thanks for the tip about the cable ties!

Not the point of the video, but that top is beautiful on you! I've hemmed and hawed about the hobo roll because it's round, which is great for a backpack but wasn't sure about how efficient it would be in a suitcase. Glad to see you show it here again and I'm going to take another look at it! Wanted to share that as a hiker and sometime 'gram weenie' , I've never gone so far as to cut my toothbrush handle down or cut out clothes tags to save weight but I do shorten those velcro cord holders so they only wrap once and are less bulky. If you're close to a weight limit, teeny things can add up! Be forewarned that it can become a weird obsession. 🙂

I've travelled extensively over the years (except when compared to the likes of you! ;-). I consider myself a pretty good packer and already organize myself in much the same way, but this was still by far the most useful of the packing videos I've ever watched. Love a lot of the gear you showed, and haven't seen it anywhere else. Sadly, the SegSac Traveler doesn't seem to be made anymore, and I can't find other compression sacks with these interior compartments (which is what made them appealing to me). Have you found any alternatives?

I have been looking for a reliable multiport adapter for traveling. This looks good but does this one also need international converters to plug it in overseas? Will it still work in overseas outlets with several items charging? (We've had issues with some items in the past not working in European outlets, due to high power demand.)

Nice advice. But no matter how you compress and stuff things: you always have to consider the weight of your luggage and personal item. There are weight and size restrictions ! I am purser for almost 30 years and almost daily see people with way too large and too heavy items of luggage. There is a misconception on the “personal” item. In my company this should not exceed the size and weight auf a “normal” handbag or bag back. Often times passengers bring their mini suitcase (way too big and heavy) plus an extra bag the size and weight of a baby elephant and trying to sneak this in as a personal item…. Not on my shift. Thing is: if we left everyone on the plane with so much stuff- where do you think we can stow it? There is no magic button the flight crew can push to have more room. Or a secret stowage area we hide purposefully from passengers….just to make them angry. If we did, trust me the company would put more seats in to sell them. So keep this in mind when travelling. One more pro tip on packing toiletries: just take what you need for the first night(s) and buy it in your destination provided it’s not in the middle of nowhere. I use it up in my vacation and the remains I just leave there….

Regarding supplements, at customs I have seen some concern by inspectors that they might be drugs, any comments? If you have any prescribed medication is it wise to have them in their original bottle? Is it possible to have RX’s filled while traveling, in particular pain medication?
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
Hi James, I tend to decant my supplements into ziploc bags for space-saving reasons. I've never had them questioned or confiscated, but if they must be, then so be it. I suggest keeping prescription meds in their original bottles. Regarding getting RXs filled abroad, it depends on the medication and the country you're visiting as to whether it's available.

I like to take many vitamins and supplements and have an upcoming trip soon and that is one of the things I wonder if I will be allowed to carry or not! ANyways, great tips from channel in general! best wishes

It depends on where you are going. I buy my supplements and keep the container seal intact, same for Advil or whatnot. I had a huge issue in Vienna over an opened bottle of ginger capsules and will never, ever do that again. Some of my prescriptions come in sealed bottles and I leave them sealed. Also, you can google where you are going and see if what you want to bring is legal, CBD being a prime example. Nothing like going to jail over a simple mistake. Also, get a paper copy of the prescriptions you take, just in case.

Put all your empty packing cubes in a pile. That mass is eliminating space in your bag. Use the strongest thinnest plastic bags you can find. I use produce dept bags. How do you take all those liquids in your carry on bag?
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
My packing cubes don't take up any more space than plastic bags.....at least not ostensibly. I have another video where I compare (with a demonstration) packing cubes vs rolling; the difference was actually negligible - which surprised me! I expected rolling to be much more of a space saver. As for the liquids - never had a problem. They fit the guidelines.

Going carryon is nearly impossible for tall people. Our jeans are twice as long & heavy as probably yours. And let's not talk about packing shoes. Big shoes take up a lot of room and dress flats are impossible to find in large sizes. So, I applaud those who can make due w/a carryon only.

Absolutely! It's way more difficult. But I'd like to point you in the direction of a good friend of mine - Matt Bowles - who is 6'5" and travels FULL-TIME with carry on luggage only, and his luggage INCLUDES a portable espresso maker, podcast studio, and a 3-piece suit with dress shoes! He hosts one of the most popular podcasts out there for location independent professionals, but he also has a few resources for minimalist travel, like this one: www.themaverickshow.com/packing-video-signup/

@@NoraDunn A number of African countries ban single use plastic but I have only lived and continue to visit Tanzania where “as of 2019, has announced that travellers are no longer allowed to bring in plastic bags when they visit the country. This includes all plastic carriers, regardless of their thickness. They even make in-flight announcements to surrender any plastic bags. Special counters are set up at the airport and border posts for travellers to surrender any kind of plastic bags. The only exception is ziplock bags used as toiletries, provided they leave Tanzania with you. Travellers are encouraged to bring cloth carry bags instead of plastic”. It does help keep down the garbage especially since most homeowners don’t have garbage pickup and public trash bins are practically non existent.
