Beautiful job, thanks for sharing, do you use solid welding wire?

good job..!!!flap discs don't last long grinding that heavy stuff lol.why did you leave a hole in it. was it getting galvanised? what kind of mig do you use?

Hi Martin, thank you and thanks for watching. The flap discs have come a long way. Especially the course variety. Though not quite grinding disc standard admittedly. It was getting galvanised. You are correct. The hole is for venting. The mig was either a Miller or an Oerlikon. 3 phase 300 amp. Both air cooled.

@@TheMetalFabGuy what are the oerlikon welders like?is the miller inverter based? i run a lincoln 300amp myself ,I find it a good welder.I have miller xmt's as well. they aren good too.

Well done, I am assuming this part is to be hot dipped galvanized and that is why the hole was left? Not sure what country you are in, but if you can get some 7" 3M Cubitron 36 grit sanding discs and put on your 7"-9" grinder, you will be really amazed how easy that weld would be taken down, and how smooth. I kick my rear for not using sanding discs earlier in my career, wish I could send you photos, THE GRAIN of the Cubitrons cut like nothing else I have seen in 30 years of work. the chips [dust ] they make is almost like something off a milling machine.....they make them in smaller sizes too....great product. Not cheap, but fast removal. .Best Regards, Paul in USA

Thanks for your comments Paul. Your assumption is correct. It was Galvanized. Uk Paul. Haven’t used 7” 36 grit cubitrons but use the 4 1/2” on a regular basis . Thanks again. TMFG

doesnt matter how smooth the weld is ground down to it will pop when galvanized, meaning the weld will show up

Hi i really like your videos. I see 300 amp seems to be the level required for this type of work from comments in your other videos. As im in UK, would 300amp machine on single phase be suitable? Im thinking of Oxford I-mig 330. ? I’m not professional but want to build garage in steel beams. Other wise i’ll just use my inverter stick and get some practice joints in. Cheers

Hi Mike. Thanks for watching. Hope you’re well. 300 amp sets in a workshop environment / structural steel work place would quite often be be the norm / bare minimum because of the mode of metal transfer usually required for structural. I have zero experience of single phase 300amp machines. But if they give you the Amps and the duty cycle is appropriate. Then I’m guessing all good. If you’re using your stick then it would be multi runs presumably and more time/rods. Not sure of the size of your garage you’re looking at but would box section (shs) or (rhs)rectangular be an option? A structural engineer could confirm this for snow loadings etc depending on the size. Good luck with it either way.

Hi there, garage will be 7m x 4m, planning for 6 vertical UC so 4 corners and one extra supporting column each side. Then forming a box. Im expecting it only to have the two smallest beam sizes in. So they aren’t thst thick. Then ill breeze block between the columns. Im gonna make some test pieces for practice. Cos i always wanted a more powerful mig set as currently on 180amp and so i thought a great time to cost in a bigger welder. Cheers for reply

Something like a 152uc23 or similar then. 7ish mm flange/web from memory. Good luck with your project Mike.

The aesthetics is fine, I understand you. Well, I have been a welder for 24 years and I am one of the few hyperbaric welders in Argentina, but I will tell you if you use the reciprocating technique it is much more aesthetic it is stronger and it is a cord with you Even if it is more welding with gas Mig Mag, I use flux, it is more comfortable for me

It was an interesting MIG like TIG for the finish weld. I'm guessing that's less to grind. I'm mostly stick welding right now, and it's really easy to leave a ton behind that takes forever to grind smooth, so I get it. You have some big iron on your projects. Any chance you can share what you're building? Not that I'm complaining. Many thanks for sharing. Aloha!

So where did you find the jobs to do this at? I’m guessing you own your own fab shop. Just curious to how you picked these jobs up? Or who to go to?

Search for "structural steel fabrication". I do the exact same work. Its great that you can make all different size welds cus there are a wide variety of thicknesses to weld, however, it is normally rusty steel with mill scale which some companies have no pride to clean it ready for clean welds
