In this video I am going to show you the absolute best ways to stay warm during a power outage in the winter. We aren't going to go over hacks or obvious things like warmer clothes, blankets, or fire. But we are going to talk about some 21st century installs that everyone should consider doing in order to make sure they keep themselves and their families safe during a bad winter storm.

If your power is knocked out this winter, are you prepared to be without heat for an extended amount of time? If so, how are you prepared? If not, what do you think is the best way?

Great videos. Very informative. Question: Is it safe to add an RV female type box outside and run wires to the breaker panel to a dedicated breaker for the generator. I will label main power and generator power to the appropriate breakers so I know which is which. The generator cable will be a male to male which will then be plugged into the generator and the RV box to supply power in case of outage.

quick question I have a 200 amp meter combo panel that has 4 spaces, that are all full but 1. Can I run a 200amp sub panel off of that? I'm trying to run another 100 amp sub to a shop off of the 200 amp sub(welding shop) is this possible. Thanks for the videos.

I am scheduled to have solar installed soon, I didn't get the battery backup system. My question is, could I get the electrician to install plug to where I could hook up a battery backup myself later? Also do you think I would be able to hook a generator to that same inlet plug to run the house when power is down? Thanks

Are you concerned with “dirty“ power? Generators that have a THD greater than 3 to 5%, possibly damaging electronic equipment? I didn’t check the specs for the two generators in the video, but I will assume their THD is significantly greater than 3 to 5%. My apologies, if my assumptions regarding THD on the generators is incorrect. Thanks for all the videos.

Since the Micro Air soft starter x48 and x72 are relatively near the same price, could you use a x72 on a 3 ton to future-proof if you ever put in a larger unit down the road?

No, they told me they are designed to work specifically for different tonnages of AC units. I’m not sure how but when I asked them they said absolutely not.

@@HowToHomeDIYQuestion. First thank you for the informative videos. Really appreciate it. As for the question. I have seen more than one person talk about using a soft start on their AC unit. When I googled this. I see so many people talk about the concerns of this damaging their AC unit. How do I know if I need the soft start or hard start device and how can be certain I am not going to damage my unit with a device that is “suppose” to help but instead be the culprit of why my brand new AC unit on my brand new home goes dead as a result of using this device. I do want to setup a system very much like you have here to use with a generator. Not sure if I am going to go with a battery powered inverter system like the EvoFlow or use an inverter generator that can use gas or propane. It seems to be said that using a generator with an inverter is better for electronics in the home. I do have electrical experience and yet I still lack confidence in doing this by myself. Anyway if there is any way you can help me with my questions I would be grateful

Um, this isn’t a cheap solution. An industrial electrician quoted me at $2000 at his cost (we’re friends) to do this.

For a transfer switch or for an interlock kit and power inlet box? Because if it is for an interlock kit and power inlet box, buddy, unless you are running 100s of foot of wiring, you may want to find some friends that are honest with you. There is NO WAY it costs him $2,000 unless there is something really odd I am missing here. Transfer switch would be more but still don't see $2,000.

@@HowToHomeDIY. This brings back a time when I did not know that there was such a thing as an interlock kit. I knew the code and the danger of back-feeding. I designed my own interlock using aluminum stock. I came to find out that someone had already done all of this work and for many different breaker box configurations to boot. Mine looked essentially identical to the commercial one which it should because there really is no other design configuration for my Square D panel. Great minds think alike although some of us are just slower…
