In this review, I compare 10 white noise machines and share my tips for choosing one. If you'd like to find out more or buy any of them, here are the Amazon links:
1. LectroFan Evo →amzn.to/346MkLx
2. Avantek
Now discontinued, so I recommend the Dreamegg D3 Pro instead (see 6 below)
3. Sound+Sleep →amzn.to/33nMZsf
4. Marpac Uno →amzn.to/3XncFzh
Marpac has now rebranded as Yogasleep, but the device is the same.
5. Lectrofan Micro 2 →amzn.to/3CEmxer
6. Dreamegg D3 →amzn.to/3LLigcE
Now replaced by the D3 Pro, which has a better speaker and more sounds.
7. Big Red Rooster →amzn.to/44Whx0z
8. Marpac Rohm →amzn.to/44dkH06
9. Aurola
Discontinued since filming.
10. Echo Dot →amzn.to/39NNiyK
Disclosure: I wasn't asked or paid to film this video, but if you decide to get something via my links above, I may receive a commission.

ABOUT
White noise machines are useful if you'd like to mask external noise that's disrupting your sleep, work, or study. By listening to a constant sound of your choosing, you're less likely to notice abrupt changes in the background noise. They can also be relaxing to listen to, particularly deeper pink or brown noise, fan sounds, and nature sounds.
In the video, I start off by explaining why I think there are several good white noise machines rather than an obvious winner. And why understanding the range of sounds they offer (white noise, fan and/or nature sounds) and the extra features are key to finding the right white noise machine for you personally.
As an overview, I recommend the LectroFan Evo for white noise and fan sounds, as well as loud volume. The Sound+Sleep has the widest range of nature sounds. The Marpac Uno has an internal fan that creates an authentic rushing air sound. The LectroFan Micro 2 is my favorite for travel. The Dreamegg D3 is a good mid-range option. The Big Red Rooster lets you use normal AA batteries.
If you have any questions, or comments about the devices in the video, please share them with me and I'll reply below.

so do these devices only "add" noise to mask the real noise? I always hoped there'd be some secret technology that would actually subtract sound or make it disappear entirely..

@@slaveNo-4028 They do add noise to mask the real noise. The idea is that the constant sound is better than intermittent sound, or simply just more relaxing than an annoying external noise.

@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, I'm happy to hear it was helpful. To be honest, if you're sleeping next to a person snoring, a white noise machine is unlikely to help much. Perhaps if you sleep in separate beds with a bit of space between them, and put the machine in between you at head height, it might help a little. But if it's loud snoring, you'll still hear it and then just end up with two loud noises in the room instead of one. You might be better off getting some decent earplugs and/or using noise-cancelling headphones. Ideally, the person snoring would take some steps to reduce it for everyone else's sake if it's possible.

Thanks Melanie, both for the compliment and decision to use my link - both are very much appreciated! Yes, it's strange that just when you want a noisy fan, many are made to be quiet these days! A larger and cheaper, not very well made one is more likely to be noisy, but also more likely to break in less time. Or maybe not - I had an old fan that lasted for years! Hopefully a white noise machine will work well for you though:-)

Something to keep in mind, the mind can identify patterns extremely well(survival) even in our sleep. The key advantage to the marpac is the non repeating full bodied white noise. Without a better speaker you can't get the low end waves that the marpac can achieve. The white noise is much richer than the others.
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi K, I agree that the white noise machines with a real fan inside them do have something none of the others have. If it had a few more options, such as volume adjustment and timers, I'd be much more positive about it. That's why I liked the Snooz so much, which I reviewed after I did this video. It's just a shame it's so expensive because otherwise the balance of real fan and extra features is great.

@@nosleeplessnights1 I have a Dohm, it's just like the marpac but it's got two speed settings.
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 жыл бұрын
@@kato1kalin I think it probably is the Marpac. The company merged with Yogasleep, so now they removed the word Marpac and just call it Dohm. The two speed version is similar to the model in my review, just with two speeds as the name suggests! I had one before, and found it gives more flexibility to adjust the sound and volume. I'd still like to see more options in future models, particularly more fan speed options as the Snooz has. That one has 10 volume settings, which is essentially just 10 fan speed settings. I'm sure they could do the same with the Dohm.
@Tomislav_B.

@@kato1kalinYou have a good point there, brain easily recognises patterns and in some low quality electronic noise machines you can hear click where the loops attach to each other. There are some great loopless noise Android apps where you can't detect repeating loops because it continously generates noise, no loops. "Noise Wall" by Mynio Tech being one of them. Highly recommended.

It doesn't increase the volume so much that you wouldn't hear an alarm set loudly. If the alarm is quiet and the machine volume is already high, then maybe it could be an issue...

Great review! Thank you so much for going over a lot of the sounds on each machine. Very helpful. It really shows the range of sounds available, and which I wouldn’t bother with (some of those “nature” sounds on KZbin white noise videos really sound like a toilet that is continually running or sizzling bacon.) Very, very helpful in my decision on which white noise machine to get. That sound + sleep sounds interesting, with so many choices, and I love that it has the option to adjust ambient sound. I actually have a Marpac, which I find loud enough for me. Too loud, actually. I just don’t like that it only has the one sound option, and only 2 volume options. Anyway thanks again for the great thorough review. Hope you got all of those machines donated to you!

Hi there. Thanks for the positive feedback - I really appreciate, and I'm happy to hear the video was useful. I agree about a lot of sounds that are recorded not being particularly good. The other day I was in the woods where there was some beautiful birdsong that I loved. I had the thought that it would be interesting for people who really love nature sounds to get a reasonable microphone and record a place where they actually went in person and felt especially happy and relaxed. Then they could play their own audio at night that would help transport them back to that place while lying in bed relaxing. Anyway, as for the white noise machines, I agree it's a shame the Marpac (now YogaSleep) devices had no volume control. There is a more modern device with an internal fan that does have volume controls - the Snooz. You can find a video of it here on my channel. The only problem is that it's twice as expensive!

@@nosleeplessnights1 that’s a great idea about recording ones own nature sounds. I might try that. I have small birds and live in a big city, downtown. One of my birds lived in a home a couple of blocks from the beach before she came to me, so I play ocean sounds for her near her cage to try to help her sleep to mask city sounds. The ones I’ve found on KZbin often have bird noises, which trigger birds (and ads.) So that’s a great idea to go out to the beach at night and record my own!

Hi It depends on how you are hearing the sounds. If they are coming from outside the window, then any device might help if it has reasonable volume. If it's coming from inside your building, then it might not help as much as you'd hope for.

We used to love the Dohm, but they are now owned by a company named Yogasleep and they started using cheaper internals. Our last model was about 10 years old before it started making a clicking noise. The new one never really worked right on the low setting and high had a very subtle rattle. After about a year, it started screaming, suggesting a bearing went out. We're going with a SNOOZ instead since it uses the same concept and looks like it uses higher quality components.

Hi. I can't comment on that as I haven't taken then apart to check, and there is nothing on their website (obviously) about using cheaper components. However, I recently played an original Marpac and a new Yogasleep model, and they sound the same to me. Having said that, I do agree that the Snooz is very good. It's considerably more expensive, and annoying that some features are only accessible via the app, but it is better in general I think. I have a video of the Snooz here in case you didn't see it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3Lalqlsj7OSfZY

Hi Ethan…. Thanks for all your reviews, they’re very helpful. Can you please advise me, I’m trying to find the machine that offers the most nature sounds. I know that the Sound + Sleep has a wide variety but it’s a bit of an ugly brick with the cheap looking shiny buttons. I was considering the Lumie luxe, it can do a lot but a couple of reviews said that the speaker quality isn’t good in relative to the £200 price tag. I’m considering the Yogasleep dreamcenter or duet as the sounds are quite nice. Hatch baby rest is another possibility but I can’t find the Hatch restore in the UK and the same goes for the Loftie clock unfortunately. I’m really looking for rainforest sounds and tropical birds. What do you think Ethan? can you advise me pls on which is best for nature sound inc speaker quality. Perhaps you know of some I haven’t mentioned. Thanks.

Hi Charlie. You're very welcome. I know what you mean about the Sound+Sleep - the design is starting to look a bit dated, but it does have a good selection of sounds. Honestly, if you're looking for something that specific - just forest and birds, I would be tempted to get a decent Bluetooth speaker and use an app on your phone. That way you can try lots of different ones until you find one that has the best nature sounds. If you have a smart speaker, you could also use that to play longer recordings of nature sounds. However, if you're looking for a white noise machine specifically, then really it's difficult to suggest one with great nature sounds as they all have shortish loops and a limited number of sounds. The Hatch restore is good, as you say, if you can get it. Of the machines I've reviewed recently, I'm not sure I'd recommend any as having such good forest sounds it's worth buying it just for that. You'd be paying £30-100 just for 2-3 minutes of sound.

Hello Ethan Great, constructive review - I'm new to this and need the kind of machine that 'masks' phone conversation from my end so a nosey neighbour cannot listen in to the conversation. They (neighbour) basically stand the other side of a party internal wall every time my phone rings or i make a call - i have to leave the room to get any privacy. I've recently started contract work as an remote adviser and can sometimes convey sensitive information during a phone-call to clients. I need to be in front of my pc so leaving the room isn't an option. Which of these machines will 'mask' MY conversation from eavesdroppers? Thanks
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you could use any of them really, as whether it does what you want or not isn't a specific feature of some machines and not of others. The problem is that the person you are speaking to might also hear the white noise, depending on how you have the audio and mic set up. I'd try the LectroFan Evo though as it has a good range of white noise, so you experiment and try to find a sound that helps mask your voice, but doesn't irritate you or the person on the end of the phone.

I haven't tried the Douni. But from what I can gather, it's basically the same as the Dreamegg D3, which I have reviewed. You're welcome! I've bought both the classic and the Evo when I've been in the UK, and both times they came in a box with a UK three prong plug, as well as an adaptor for the EU if I remember rightly. So you should be fine. On another note, you can buy three prong plugs with USB outlets pretty cheaply, so then you can plug in your devices to the wall even if they only have a USB cable.

@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, you're welcome and I'm glad you liked them! For just white noise and fan sounds, I would say the LectroFan - the original or the Evo are both great. For nature sounds, probably the Sound+Sleep has the least detectable loops, followed by the Avantek I would say. I also like the speaker quality of both of those compared to the others, though the Dreamegg is pretty good too. But there will almost always be some looping with these devices, unless the machine dynamically generates the sounds, like the LectroFan does with the ocean sounds. But they can't generate sounds which are less like white noise, like bird song or thunder. Whether it's an annoying 30 second loop with very noticeable loud 'squarks' from the same bird, just one repeated thunder clap, or a couple of minutes with a little less obvious sound repetition sadly comes down to the price in my experience. Almost always, it seems that around the $20 price mark = very noticeable looping and poorer speaker quality. $40-100 = usually better recordings, though even some of the more expensive devices still managed to skip the quality control line in the manufacturer's design process!

@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi ble ble Glad the review was helpful. To be honest, I don't think it would help much in your situation anyway. To drown out the noise you make, you would need to have it so loud, and right next to an adjoining wall, that the extra sound would probably annoy them just as much. And it is unlikely to block out the sound of screaming. I think you would have a better long-term outcome if you tried some self-help techniques for sleep talking and nightmares, if that's what is happening. If you can see a doctor, that might help to get a diagnosis. But if not, there are lots of good websites with techniques for relaxation before going to bed and other steps you can take which might help reduce how disrupted your sleep is. In some cases, just spending some time before going to sleep trying to put your mind at ease and in a relaxed state can help. So if it were me, rather than spending money on a machine which probably won't help, I'd look at free ways to tackle the root of the problem. And in this case, information is key:-) All the best!

Thank you for this review! Is there a certain machine you would recommend for thunder noise specifically? Also do you happen to know the name of the app you used?
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Jenna. Honestly, I don't think any of them stand out particularly with their thunder recordings. The speakers tend to struggle a little with the deep rumbling noise, and the recordings are often quite short and repetitive just by the nature of how many thunder claps makes sense to put into a 1-4 minute loop I think. It's easier to create a more random sounding loop if its a constant noise like rain or waterfalls. So honestly, I wouldn't feel right in recommending any of them if thunder is the one you like best, as I don't want you to spend your money on my recommendation and then be disappointed when you realise it only has two or three variations of the thunder claps! I'd suggest trying a couple of free apps instead to see if you can find one with less repetition. And about the app - it's simply called white noise generator. You'll know it by the colorful icon with the angled grid pattern.

If you play white noise loudly in the room you are in, then it's possible it will block out the pump noise. You'd need to experiment with the volume, positioning, and track choice though and there's no guarantee it will block it all out. You can use it during the daytime if you like - you just need to be able to tolerate white noise!

I'm very sorry to hear that Julie. Were you able to get your money back or a replacement? I would start there if possible, as the device works really well when you don't get a dud! But equally, I can understand why you might be put off that brand now after a bad experience. I don't know any that only have deep brown noise, and it's rare that they have more than just two or three deeper white noise variations. Your best bet might be an app, or KZbin if you don't mind playing through a mobile device and/or speaker.

@@nosleeplessnights1 I don't mind having other options for sounds. I just want one that has good brown noise, as many are just high pitched white noise (like the hatch). I looked into the dreamegg d3 but a ton of amazon reviews say they just stopped working after a few weeks. Lectrofan has me nervous of this happening again.

My neighbors above me put in hardwood floors and I hear like every step they take..I want something loud to drown them out...which if any of these do you recommend?
@nosleeplessnights1

Hi Chris, that's a difficult one as in my experience white noise doesn't usually drown out loud upstairs footsteps unless you have the machine right next to you and on a loud volume. But maybe you could try one with a headphone jack, so that way you have an extra line of defense, so to speak. So I'd try the lectrofan evo, sound+sleep or dreamegg.

Excellent video! 😃👍 I have to add that I also have several white noise and nature sound apps downloaded on my phone but unless you're listening with headphones, they're not loud enough to drown out external noise. I have to have white noise playing the entire night because my neighbours are so loud! We also had to endure night road works! I have personally owned at least 10 if not more various types of white noise machines. Some are better than others. You need constant noise to drown out outside noise, some nature sounds are only good if you're in a quiet environment. I personally like rain sounds but I have been known to use multiple white noise machines for different neighbours on either side of the wall! 😩 The cheaper ones with external batteries aren't loud enough.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I agree with every point you make there. Apps are great, but you need headphones or a speaker. And constant noise is better than nature sounds for sure, with the exception of waterfalls and rain which can also be pretty good.

@@nosleeplessnights1 I agree. I just bought another white noise machine that arrived yesterday and one more on its way! 😁 I really like rain sounds. I mainly bought a white noise machine to drown out outside noise. I can't live without it anymore! I wish I bought one decades earlier. Without it, my neighbours would probably get murdered. I'm really annoyed by other people's noise. I use a combination of white noise machine and fan sounds on my phone to drown out neighbours on various sides of the wall. 😞 Living in an apartment is the worst!

You're awesome. I went with the app connected to a blue tooth speaker I wasn't putting to good use. The office provides us with the Marpac brand. Thank you for saving me some money. When I can afford one, I want the one that cost one hundred bucks. New subscriber.

Hi Sophia, thanks for your positive comment - you made me smile reading it! I'm glad the video was helpful and helped you save some money. As much as white noise machines can be great, so can finding an alternative that means you can spend your money elsewhere:-)

can i use this for work at home since i am on the phone all day...my kids are home as well would this help

Some people do use them for work, yes. I sometimes listen to white noise when I really need to concentrate and am bothered by the sound of traffic. But I can't listen to it all day, so be aware that I think white noise in the daytime has a limit before the noise itself can be a bit much! I imagine everyone has a different tolerance and enjoyment level, and it will also depend on the type of white noise and volume you set it at.

Hi, are any of these of any use for the living room? Impact noise from the flat above is awful. Would be nice to relax and chat with wife or watch tv without booming steps distraction
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 Жыл бұрын
In theory, yes. But to reduce the impact noise you hear, you would need to have it so loud that you probably wouldn't enjoy the TV or chat as much...

It will play until the battery runs out if you don't turn it off. Depending on the volume level, it should last all night.
