How to fight using Wing Chun, AKA Wing Chun for Real Fighting (NOT CHI SAO!). The brutal truth about Wing Chun and why so many Wing Chun people SUCK at real fighting!
The truth?
Most long term Wing Chun practitioners aren't capable of using their Wing Chun to fight.
Here are several reasons why...
Just know that these aren't problems with Wing Chun as a martial art. The real problems boil down to a lack of understanding of Wing Chun and how to train.
1. Wing Chun is Fluid, Not Rigid
Since when did Wing Chun become so rigid? When people stopped using it to apply. Instead they isolated their Wing Chun into a chi sao only platform where the natural long range Wing Chun became obsolete. To "Be Like Water" is very much a Wing Chun concept! If you can't be fluid and structured with you Wing Chun, then you haven't practiced it long enough. Its that simple. Wing Chun is not supposed to be rigid, mechanical or awkward. ONLY BEGINNERS FEEL THIS WAY!
2. Wing Chun fighting is not supposed to be only close-range. Not sure who's to blame for this one. But the art of Wing Chun is a concept-based system centered around efficiency and adaptation. Wing Chun doesn't need to be mixed with other martial arts such as boxing or kickboxing in order to be effective in long range. Wing Chun concepts need to be practiced at longer ranges than chi sao range in order for your Wing Chun to be applied at these longer, more realistic fighting ranges. Starting your drills or sparring ONLY at chi sao range is not how Wing Chun is supposed to be started.
3. You do not need a bridge in order to use Wing Chun for fighting. Using Wing Chun should become natural, instinctive and intuitive for the mature Wing Chun student. You must learn to apply Wing Chun in long range without the "security blanket" of linking to your opponent's arm bridge. Be comfortable hitting and getting hit. If you are not, spar more. Use mouth guards. Punch and get punched. It's that simple.
In a nutshell, Wing Chun is meant for fighting. Its concepts are some of the most beautiful in existence. The best Wing Chun for fighting is the one without limitations.

The reason people that say 90% of the fights go to the ground is becasue 90% of people can't fight standing up. Thats works in competition with one opponent..but usually in a street confrontation its a group of punks, that would never challenge anybody one on one. Once your on the ground with one..you are open toattacks from theothers to kick you in the face while you are grappling with their colleague

Adam's perception of Wing Chun and away it should be utilized is absolutely on the money! Too many times us moviegoers expect Wing Chun to be a technique based on contact. When actually, it should be more based on the ACT of the opponent!

Move fluidly like a boxer, and use your wing chun when you find yourself in trapping range. Mobility is one of the key elements in fighting and few people ( in WC ) understand the use of their footwork, a good understanding of yee gee Kim ye ma, which is only a training stance, should be ingrained in your motor system. Your WC stance will come into play automatically without thinking about them. After all, we don’t go around performing our daily activities in a pigeon toe stance, that’s not normal. So, as Muhammad Ali used to say: “ float like a butterfly, sting like a be “, and don’t be a slave to Wing Chun and make the concepts, theories, and principles work for you, the hell with rules. Lol 😀👊🏼🙏🏼

Absolutely right..thisis one of thebest understandings of wing chun...I've practice wing chun for many years but my foundation is traditional boxing and I've always felt that most wing chun practioners don;t understand that wing chun stance is not a fighting osture its just for training and practicing form..in a real confrontation you have to move around like a boxer or wrestler or whatever your discipline is and when you get within the range of attack the wing chun hand techniques are then applied. Positioning yourself in a wing chun stance looks good when Donnie Yen does it in the movies but in real life ..its a telegraph for anyone that knows anything about combat

Truth! I believe that is why we are seeing so many "Flow" systems coming out now because Wing Chun became rigid, and rule based. I love the part you said about constantly getting better, but I have also come to realize that you are constantly getting older, and your Wing Chun must adjust as you age especially as you pressure test!

I really like this video. I have only few experiences with Wing Chun and I was wondering what is going on with it. Because I knew it is an effective system, but on the other hand I knew lots of practitioners get the wrong end of a stick. You showed me, what it is about. Ad ground fighting - I really like answe of Bill Wallace to the dogma: "Fights end on the ground." He said: "Ok, fights OFTEN end on the ground, but they ALWAYS start on the feet."

The problen is after the 90s wing chun became a esoteric traditional fitness art. I mean even in the beginning of wing chun there were tournaments and sparring. I would. Never stand in a ring fight with man sao wu sao and one line footsteps. What wing chun people forget in the beginning nobody knows wing chun and was suprised now everybod knows it.. And many arts like krav maga, muay thai ect adapt techniques. So wing chub guy should be train against this arts too. Not only wing chun vs wing chun or wing chun vs ordinary guy of the street.

Hi Sifu Willis. I think the best question I can ask is- the distance you mention and speak of is that a, it comes with experience thing progression? But to learn you need to be close otherwise getting the contact is nigh on impossible. Or reading the situation is very difficult and then if the person is all of a sudden on you, choosing the correct block/attack is missing because you are freaking out when in close.

You are absolutely right when you say 95% of wing chun people got it wrong. And that is sad, and i will add that includes most Chinese arts. That is why a mediocre MMA fighter is going around kicking all these Chinese martial artist asses and they still do not get it.Could it be that these sifus put fame and fortune over substance i guess they wont be able to aggrandize themselves with ridiculous titles and hero worship if people was to actually see that these guys could not fight their way out of a wet paper bag.But as the saying goes their is a sucker born every minute and fools who are afraid of the challenge and sacrifice it takes to be a real fighter will continue to pay these guys in hope of learning a magic technique were they dont have to break a sweat.

@@sifuadamwilliss I appreciate you too..giving the facts steaight up...Too many people ae disallusioned about Wing Chun,,it should also be noted that finger thrusting is impractical and dangerous..unless executed by extremely highly skilled monk, who is trained in iron palm or iron fingers...The upper philanges (bones) of the fingers are the most fragile in the body..and the human skull has the largest and hardest mass of bone..the chances of accurately thrusting fingers to the eyes without hitting the forehead bone is highly improbable..becasue in real confrontation the head doesn't remain still..if you miss and most likely you will your fragile finger bones will break once forcefully meeting with the skull...This is an anatomical fact that gets overlooked when training in Bui Jee...and .Thats why the martial arts community needs trainers like you...to help people understand what is effective and what is not and how and when to use skillsets appropriately for real combat situations
