Oh btw most of Inkling's outfits are their own distinct characters with names! Orange is Kaori, the poster child for S1 Blue is John, the other S1 poster child Yellow is Kaori in her uniform as Agent 3 (if you don't change any settings in the later games, Kaori is 3 by default) Pink is Laura, another S1 promo character. I love her shes pretty Cyan... Isn't actually Specs. It's Rui, another S1 promo character who takes a backseat to Kaori and John like Laura does. Specs is based on Rui, but they're not identical. Yellow-Green is from the manga, though, and is a combination of the characters Skull and Rider. (Skull's gear, Rider's colour.) Purple is an unnamed character wearing the school uniform amiibo gear. Dark blue is the only one that i genuinely cannot find a reference for, but its possible he's (very) loosely based on Pit, a fifth member of the group Kaori, John, Laura and Rui belong to. Pit wears a rugby helmet, though, and is generally cyan in colour, so it's a very loose connection.

Honestly I think the more basic palette swaps tend to look better from an aesthetic standpoint than the ones that try to retrofit specific references onto the characters' design. Shulk's alts reference other characters but I think they all look like vomit for example. Of course, the worst cases are when a character's alts are barely distinguishable from one another, as with Cloud and Pac-Man.

I like the green Sephiroth alt. It's based on the color scheme of the Midgar Zolom (which is that giant snake at the start of the game) since it actually has a good connection to Sephiroth, based on an iconic scene featuring the Midgar Zolom which I'll spoil below if you're curious, but I'd recommend playing the game blind. The Midgar Zolom is a giant snake in the waters outside Midgar after you first enter the main overworld. If notoriously really powerful as an enemy early game, and is essentially unkillable early game and its unique magic spell will kill everyone in your party instantly, and the intended way to get through that section is to either breed a chocobo and run past that section because it's that unkillable. And then after you finally get past the waters with Midgar Zoloms, you see a Midgar Zolom dead on a giant pointed rock and Cloud says "Did Sephiroth do this?" (Answer: yes). This is before you see Sephiroth for the first time and you've only heard of him and seen what he's done and your party couldn't do anything to the Midgar Zolom but Sephiroth was able to kill one brutally without any effort. It's an amazing way to continuously sell the power of Sephiroth before you ever see him once

21:26 Actually, Link doesn’t actually have pink hair, it’s just that there’s a dark world type of thing where Link isn’t a human, but instead a pink rabbit. I think there was like a 16 colour limit per sprite and the two version were I guess lumped up into one so that’s why he has pink hair. In the guidebook it shows him with yellow hair in drawings, which supports this even further. But take that with like half a grain of salt. Edit: “Nerd” inkling isn’t even bad what???

As a HUGE Kingdom Hearts fan, I definitely agree that Timeless River is his best alt. It's a really nice reference, and a very surprising one to see included, given how close it is to Mickey Mouse and old school Disney. Not to mention it has unique facial expressions and is one of the more unique costumes in Ultimate. I also really like his KH3 outfit, as I think it's the right balance of red and black and all in all just looks really good on him. If I had to really get technical and nerdy when picking the worst, it would be his blue alternate based on his Wisdom Form in his 7th costume. Simply because of the fact that it's an incorrect reference. Wisdom Form is a form he has in Kingdom Hearts 2. Yet in Smash he has the Wisdom Form recolor for his Dream Drop Distance outfit, even though he never uses Wisdom Form in that game or with that outfit. So while it is a reference, it's not actually a correct one as they have it on the wrong outfit. Sorry to get super nerdy. Great video!

I think Wisdom form and his Dream Drop Distance alts should have been nixed entirely. I don’t get DDD being there as it’s the only non-mainline game that’s referenced, and not even one of the more (dearly) beloved in the franchise from what I’ve seen. Not to say I don’t like the game though, it’s fantastic. I’d replace DDD Sora with Roxas, but getting one KH character in was already hard enough so let’s say that’s impossible, I’d replace DDD with Sora’s costume from Halloween Town, and Wisdom Form with anti-Sora. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m still very happy with the lineup we got either way.

I agree with the yoshi segment, i miss black :( For gnw, the yellow and light blue (Alts 3 and 6) are based on the gameboy and gameboy light respectively. Alt 5 should be replaced with pink and Alt 7 green alt should be brightened up like how it is in melee/brawl, as on some stages it looks too similar to his default. These two changes alone would make his costume selection SUBSTANTIALLY better.

The main reason why Hero is called "Hero" throughout all of the announcer calls is that they don't have official-official names. Erdrick is a title given to legendary heroes. Eight literally has nothing. Luminary is a title. The only one between the 4 with an "official" name is Solo. Solo is the default name of the male Hero in Dragon Quest IV, whilst Sofia is the default for if you choose to be female. It makes sense to call them all "Hero" as they don't really have a name. They just have titles.. or *the number of their placement in the series.*

Considering cloud wore _bright purple_ in the actual PS1 game and _vibrant blue_ in Final Fantasy Tactics, just having those be variants of his default color scheme as two available costumes would have helped considerably. A bright red version of his Advent Children look as a reference to the Red Mage/Scholar classes would have also been tremendous, but I have a strong Red Mage bias so there's that.

Perhaps in hindsight, it could pass off as an unintentional reference to Crash and Spyro, respectively. Both Crash and Banjo were created in the late 90s to rival Mario in 3D platforming, and it just so happens that both wear shorts of different colors. Crash wears blue shorts, and Banjo wears yellow shorts. The alt color mentioned as the "worse" is as close to Crash as you can get, as Banjo wears blue shorts in that color, combined with the reddish tint of his fur. Kazooie and Spyro could be seen as Second Fiddles, overshadowed by their respective peers in terms of solo potential. Kazooie is just too weak on her own to be a full-fledged hero and Spyro, despite having his own series before being relegated to Guest Star, lacks the popularity that Crash has, and unfortunately Activision gave up on Spyro after Reignited Trilogy, hence why he only shows up in Crash games as a guest in recent releases. Kazooie being purple in that color scheme makes her close to Spyro's purple scales, with Banjo's backpack being yellow to match Spyro's underbelly. Now, all three series are owned by Microsoft, which wasn't the case in 2019, so it's all pure coincidence by the time Challenger Pack 3 released.

Here’s what I think: I’ve been a Sonic main since Brawl came out. Sonic is awesome! But I do agree with you about the fact that they were a bit lazy with some of Sonic’s color skins. Except for the black skin that is suppose to be a reference to Dark Sonic from Sonic X. The other skin of him with his blue shoes and glowing aqua bracelets are suppose to be based on the Crystal Ring in Sonic Adventure 1. And his magenta colored wrists and shoes are suppose to be a reference to Nights. Overall, lazy choices, and I’m always going to stick with his default costume anyway. They could have added his skin with the SOAP shoes, Extreme Gear goggles and Shoes, his Darkspine appearance in Secret Rings, or even his Boom skin or his Movie skin would’ve been better choices. If they were to add another Smash game, we should expect better color swaps like that of Sonic and not just his shoes. Overall, I still enjoy playing as Sonic in Smash.
