That part about not having enough space to practice takedowns remembers me of our first dojo. it was tiny, with pilars in the middle of the room and pointy heating devices near the walls. I still remember that time fondly since NO ONE got hurt by hitting things (or people) they shouldn't have while being taken down. We where all so extremely cautious. Everyone who trained at that dojo has to this day amazing spacial awareness. :)

I can't thank you enough for expanding my view on wrestling and grappling. I was a strike purist, even doing Traditional Wushu, I never put profound thought in the grappling and wrestling of it. I never searched to understand the forms in a useful way for what they're created, and the worse, I didn't tried to use it in sparring. So in the years watching and listening to you I started to incorporate it. And man I can't thank you enough. It made feel complete and enjoy even more martial arts. Always praying and hoping for the best for you and your family. You are a great man and one of the people I will always address in high regard and respect.

Starting "late" doesn't have to be the obstacle some people think it is. I'm 32, and started learning wrestling at age 30 -> and every class I take down guys in their early and mid-twenties who wrestled in High School and College. Age is real, and does slow you down... but there are so, so, so many things you can do make up for it: technique training, strength training, cardiovascular training, mobility training, and enhanced proprioception through practicing many sports. I like my chances against someone else my age with a substantial wrestling pedigree.. if all they've done the past ten years is sit on the couch eating potato chips.

It seemed to pay off last wrestling season aa I would start to catch some of the guys who used to beat me with uchi matas, and lat drop throws. In my mma I've been hitting everyone with my greco throws when we do grappling and I'm very exciting for this year's wrestling season as I've dedicated a good amount of my year to improving my wrestling.

You had some incredibly good points here. Iv been watching your material for a while now, and id consider myself a bit of a combat sports nerd, so i might know a little bit about most things, yet i always seem to learn and take a few notes on your videos. I greatly appreciate it. I dont know how its going to go over with the guys, but you have an incredible point on skin to skin contact. Iv been grappling for many years i could confidently say, yet iv never done any %100 in a true mma setting. Yet i absorb a ton of it through media. It almost makes me feel hollow lol. Wow. Im going to definatly have to try that and get some of that in. Im just a bit concerned about how the guys are going to react. A short ways through training ill tell them all to start losing the rashguards, and kurtkas. If i proclaim its for science and experience, i know one guy might. Hes a brother, but he's one of those guys that takes it too far and his grappling is nothing but a science experiment it seems and completely takes the fun and fluidity out of it. "So..... did you eat any cheese this morning? No? Excellent *jots it down on his clip board chart* i now have a %75 chance of landing a kneebar on you. Right leg, about 3 minutes in." I enjoy a bit of stats of information myself, but im really not interested in seeing combat like neo from the matrix and everythings just binary code. If this guy starts rolling like hes neo, than maybe ill expand my note taking and start recording what kinds of soap everyones using. What you said about finding excuses in not finding time or resources to train. Theres always a chance. With my old employment, I did alot of travelling. Sometimes gone for weeks at a time. Sometimes id be back for a weekend and get some open mat tike in on a saterday, but than id be on the road again that sunday. Soke towns would have nothing, but the odd little town would have a karate or taekwondo dojo, dojang. Most, not all of them would have an open session day. As a visitor id ask if anyone wanted to try oit some rolling. A few would already have some wrestling experience and what not, a d most of the time we had alot.lf fun, and the instructor was alright with it. Some places were conpleteky against it, worried aboit safety, and didnt habe a single mat to put on the hard wood flooring. The odd community would also have an illegitimate mma gym in a guys basement. Definatly some pros and cons with it. I would say to defiantly get some certified training first, or atleast one guy for a while. I cant say much, because our group is in that situation right now. Conplicated long story, but weve bounced around a bit since our original gym changed. Last gym we were at, our senior memeber didnt see eye to eye with the coach there, some things were said, there were some really childish prejudices against our art, which was something created by two men long ago, and has nothing to do with todays social and political events, more words were said, he insulted our old gym, so our guy said some things, it was pretty tense, so he both kind of got kicked out, and just walked out. We were told ofcourse that we could stay, but after what he said, how could we. It wouldnt be right to leave our bro by himself. So, we train with what we have for now. And have turned into another one of those lil ghost gyms in the city. Atleast in this city, ever since covid, alot of martial artists took there practices to provate locations. Keeping them in tight strict groupings. When it ended, since theybalready had there own equipent, gyms and experience, many of them just kept going. So now the unfortuante legitimate gyms are lacking alot of attendance and experienced memebers. Its good to see some of them still going with his numbers of young students. Maybe thats a good thing. Few gyms unfortunately didnt make it though and closed down, with the coach just leading a private group still. Oddly enough, and ill always encourage legitimate training, there was one guy, just a blue belt that started his own thing, and ome of his guys entered into a few different things and did really well. Hed still do alot better if he joined a legit gym, but a person can excel in a illegitimate gym still to a degree. One coincidental thing about our old crew doong its own thing is a buddy of ours that we thought long gone happened to move back to the city and heard about us, so we invited him over and got him going again. It really is healthy for a person. After his first day he said he needed that badly in so many ways. Thats how most of us feel if we dont do anything for a couple weeks. Speaking of gyms, I personally have a match coming up with an old rival of mine. I didnt know about it until about two weeks ago lol. Its all in good nature, and its just graplling. His brother took sambo with us, he was actually one of our instructor's first students way back in the day when nobody even knew it was sambo. Some people might laugh at this, but it could of arguably been one of canandas first sambo gyms, only it wasnt through the sambo federation or anything. Just a small club with an old guy keeping young guys busy, teaching them what he could. Learned alot more than just combat. So anyways, his brother took it for a bit, but like most brothers that collide heads, he decided to go be with the cool kids once he got older and started working and took up bjj. He was off and on, but he did have the pleasure of rolling with Royce when he came to the city and visited a few gyms when he was doing his tour years ago. So when wed all get together, wed play wrestle. I beat him a few times, he got me the odd time. Well, i didnt think much of it, butni guess he decided hed turn into super shredder over this past year and call out a rematch. We hadnt seen the guy for a while, with everyone being busy, but i guess this entire time, hes been preparing for this rematch lol. So what iv been told by his brother and people is that when they saw him, i guess he put on a bit of muscle and weight and has been training with one of his old jiujitu buddies in private much like we started. Were about thr same size and height , so if hes put on weight and muscle, im guessing hes going to try and squash me. Lol we all love the early warning he gave me. So wel see what happens. Itll be alot different than our other times when we play wrestled. It was usually late at night in a social setting and had a hard floor, which kept us from going for any hard takedowns. This time itll be during the day on a beach with thick sand. So im almost certain hes been pulling rocky, running on the sand. I might ask him for a best out of 3, and if he gets me on the sand, ill ask for grass on the park next to it. I have 2.5 weeks to prepare for it lol. Thats what we mean about early notice. So, all i can really do now is keep flexibility up, and focus on some strategy. If it turns out good we might put it online for some laughs and to either let him have his glory, or to taunt him even more lol.

Be consistent Start your bjj rolls from standing Cross train in different grappling styles: freestyle, folk style, Greco Roman, Catch Wrestling, judo, BJJ, shuai Jiao, sumo Give yourself limitations when you drill and spar Find the balance between being the best athlete you can be and the best technician. Be the guy who has the potential to outperform your opponent with power, strength, and speed, but most of the time you won’t need to because your understanding of position, timing, leverage, structure, and framing will do the job. Drill hybrid striking/grappling sports like sanda and Muay Thai that help you develop quick wrestling and clinch fighting skills against competent strikers. Occasionally supplement with jacketed styles like judo, sambo, shuai jiao, and BJJ for the contrast. For contrast is a powerful teacher. Spar without a shirt sometimes when you get really hot and sweaty. MMA fights are shirtless and incredibly slippery compared to grappling in a rashguard. The stage light in MMA arenas can get incredibly hot and make fighters start sweating bullets before the first round even begins. If you have never had the experience of skin on skin grappling before your first MMA fight, you will be shocked at the difference. Different techniques and strategies work better against different people. You can force a square peg into a round hole, but why not just use a round peg if you have one? Do not be afraid of adding striking to your grappling game. The whole sport of MMA is contingent upon it. Your set ups for clinching and takedowns will be based entirely on timing and distancing correctly relative to strikes- your own and your opponents. Do sparring drills where one fighter can only strike while the other can only grapple. Do drills where you have several handicaps and your opponent has none. Use the cage. Train up against it. The majority of takedowns and clinch fighting in MMA happen against the cage. If your entire wrestling experience is on the open mat, you are ill prepared for cage fighting. Use a ton of control so you and your training partners don’t get injured. Fewer injuries means more training time. More training time means more experience. More experience means superior grappling skills. Wrestle with people who have a wide variety of skill sets. Less skilled wrestlers are often your greatest assets, since training with them will allow you to hone and perfect your skills by getting massive numbers of live reps you would never get working with a superior wrestler. Sparring with less skilled fighters can allow you to try new techniques and develop them to usable levels. At the same time, challenge yourself by working with as many evenly matched and technically superior training partners as you can find. There’s no shame in “losing” a round in the gym against someone who knows more than you do. That’s going to be the kick in the pants you may need to move past being the big fish in the small pond you have been comfortable with for far too long. In the grappling arts, we may take each other down every day, but by doing so, we lift each other up to the next level. What is the best wrestling for MMA? It’s the wrestling you are willing and able to do. What’s the best step to take next so you can improve? The one you’re willing to do. Thanks for watching. Now get out there and train.

I’m curious are the footwork patterns for boxing and kickboxing different or are they mostly the same?
@RamseyDewey

Footwork means where and how you place your feet during any given technique. Any techniques involving kicking, defending a kick, or otherwise moving relative to a kick will be different.

0If I want to become the best MMA fighter thatI can become, should I invest 100% of my time into MMA or should I train BJJ and wrestling seperately, as well? I think training MMA only would be wiser.

Hey Ramsey, Given you're pretty knowledgeable about Sanda, after watching a few matches from World Cup (but maybe not enough), I keep wondering why there doesn't seem to be a lot of victories by pushing off the plaftorm. From the three winning strategies (KO, more points, and 2 pushes out the platform), it feels like the one that could be the most successful for someone good in grappling. Do you have any insight on why it's not a more popular choice? Or maybe I just watched the wrong matches!
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 11 ай бұрын
Probably because it’s very difficult to push your opponent off the lei tai without being dragged off yourself. It’s may also be that most sanda practitioners don’t practice on a lei tai, and many sanda completions take place on an open mat or a boxing ring, so a lot of competitors are not familiar with the strategies of lei tai fights.

@@RamseyDewey Thanks for the answers, makes sense that pushing out without being dragged out or down yourself must be very hard

Are you still in NYC by any chance? I think you said something about coming? "Edit: It might have been Jesse Enkamp)." I just love your shit. You're a beast and tell it like it is. If you really want it, you will do what is necessary to get there.

@RamseyDewey Ohhhh.... I somehow miss read it this time. That is awesome! Family always comes first before yourself and has higher power. I hope you are having an amazing time. If you ever plan on visiting the States for anything different, I will send my email to one of your other accounts. Would love to catch up and speak for a few. Keep continuing to do big things. I hope you and people like you start to change the game again. I feel it's in need if change, but that is just me.

@RamseyDewey With the focus being back on the philosophy behind the Martial Art, preserving the history correctly. By no means am I saying to take anything out. Just remind people that there are different types of fights. I have been to war and have seen the worst in humanity. A lot of people do not understand something, so minor people can have major implications that change the lives of the people involved forever. Also, these professional fighters' bodies are broken down by 50. Not all, of course, but a good many amd now with this bare knuckle fighting. How stupid can you get. I can not even say anything about them, other than the fact they are idiots.

A suplex isn’t a slam. If you know how to control it, and your training partner knows how to fall, it can be an easy landing. I don’t use the suplex on most people, because they’ll hurt themselves on a fall- but I’ve trained with Jourdan for over 7 years. He knows what’s up.

Meh, there is no replacement for in person learning. Watching videos without place to practice and people to practice with doesn't get most people anywhere. So where the hell do you get to expose yourself to all those wrestling styles? Western wrestling is only available to students in highschools and universities. It's weird but everywhere I look there is only BJJ. A few Judo schools I came across were geared for kids, because of Olympics being the ultimate goal. Nothing against BJJ, but really every time I see a person drop on their ass and chase their opponent makes me roll my damn eyes. Yes, I know I don't stand a chance against BJJ person but for me it's really only about self defense. Not about learning how to drop on my ass on a competition mat.
