My first trip to the UK was in 1994 at the age of 19. I sought out the best British stationary I could find and ended up with Three Candlesticks. It was reserved for special correspondence and I kept that pad for many years. Many trips later to the UK I discovered Smythson stationary and Christmas cards which have become some of my favorites. Here at home in the US I’ve bought and used Crane stationary which is 100% cotton fiber and somewhat of a luxury. Fountain pens are an interest but I’ve never really used them much but thanks to you I’ll be giving them a try again. Cheers!🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧

I was the same. I loved the stationery in the British shops. Alas, the selection has declined a lot, but there are still wonderful papers to be had. (Incidentally, I love using the stitched Clairefontaine student notebooks - fabulous paper and you can buy some very thick ones, too!)

By the way, how hard is it to find Air Mail (Par Avion) envelopes, nothing here in NZ, but Basildon Bond make an "outstanding" one in blue paper with the red/blue checked borders - classic! I love writing to pen-pals of like mind, and just rambling on about our latest discoveries and showing off our latest inks by changing within the letter as a new subject arises. I'm with you on not swabbing samples, how does that show you how it writes or shades? Always a pleasure and an excuse for a cuppa when I watch your videos. When restricted to a 7mm line guide, do you go down a nib size? Another interesting question for the viewers to answer might be, what does it cost you to post a letter Nationally & Internationally. For me to post to you is a small barista made coffee or a loaf of expensive bread - $3.80, that's 2 pounds or 2.30 euros. To post within NZ is $1.70 or 88p (more than a Newspaper). Posting Christmas cards is almost a thing of the past. Also gone are the annual Health Stamps which where a stamp marked about 10% more( $1 +10c) so it could fund children's holiday camps, alas the coin counters stopped them about 7 years ago.(Est.1929)

Last time I checked, a foreign letter was exactly double a UK first class one. That assumed the same weight to EU countries, and much lighter to the US or Australia. Now it's changed again. Now the first class stamp is 95p, but all EU letters up to 100g cost £1.85. For letters under 20g to the rest of the world it's also £1.85, but to post letters up to 100g it's not £2.55. And heavier is much more expensive. Thanks for the comment, Bryan!

Love the video as always. I recently bought my first fountain pen because of all the pens you showed on here. It's just a little LAMY Safari but it still writes wonderfully compared to the ballpoint pens. I used to use. Also, I'd be very interested in the penpal idea... However, I'm in the US and I'm sure the postage for that would be expensive. ALSO, my handwriting is absolutely dreadful. Sometimes I can't even read what I have written.

Hi, Donovan, And thanks for the vote of confidence in my video-making! I'm really glad you're enjoying the Lamy. I'm trying to see whether there is a way of sorting out the postage/admin costs of the penpal club. There should be several ways of sorting that out, I think - one is just to accept that foreign stamps cost more, and work out how much. However, I'll have to think it through in a lot more detail. @@writerlywitterings A new channel, or a separate section initially does not sound like a bad idea, since, certainly, and regardless of the number of people who participate, it is a niche in the "modern world". But on the other hand, the subject does not differ much from what you normally post, as it complements pens, paper, and other stationery products, even your books. To be honest, I believe it will depend on how you want to organize the project. Maybe, start on this channel, and see how things are going and, then, decide whether to separate it from your regular content or not.

I was sent a sample of Delft's earlier this year and absolutely love it, but sadly Akkerman have run out - Covid means they couldn't keep up with demand - and so I hunted around for the nearest comparable ink, and hit on China. Which sort of means, whichever it really was, you should be OK with the Diamine version! Hope that makes sense!

Ah, I really couldn't say. I suspect that Three Candlesticks would have a problem - it has a glorious texture - ideal for a pen, less good for most inkjets. If you contact the companies, they may send you a sample for testing.

Hi. Great video. Does the Three Candlesticks pad include a lined sheet?
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid not - but I think that with the thickness of the paper, a lined sheet probably wouldn't help. It's thick enough that any writing on the opposite side is completely hidden - no shadowing - so I think it's too opaque for lined paper to serve any purpose. I have to let you know, though, that I have just written four letters with this paper, and when I read your note, I had to grab the pad to make sure I wasn't being a berk and missing something really obvious, like a lined sheet hidden at the back! There is a blotting sheet, but no lined sheet.

Great. Just great. More paper I want desperately to buy. Our income has dropped drastically because of Covid, but I would still be willing to pay a fee for such a club, even if i can't use it very often. If I can use it, I'm paid up, and if I can't, the fee will help someone else receive letters. Do try to keep the fee reasonable. Say, under a thousand dollars. That said, this is a difficult time of the year. Much, much lower income, and the holidays on the way. Traveling, presents, etc. It might be best to start such a club in January. Just a thought.
@writerlywitterings
@writerlywitterings 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, James, and thanks for that. Yes, I doubt it will kick off until early January. Meanwhile I'm looking at options such as PayPal or Patreon to fund membership. Both could work, The interesting thing may well be the old system of keeping people's names and addresses on file (EU rules on data collection and storage are a minefield) but I'd hope I can get around that with the fact that other people would be writing in, and thereby confirming their interest. I would hope to keep the fee under $1,000, but if you are happy with that, I'd be delighted to take your money! More seriously, on Patreon I could have a monthly charge from $3 upwards to fun things. I'll have to look at the cost of writing to America (so, add in the cost per sheet of paper, cost of envelopes, cost of stamps etc). The charge per person has to be the same (I don't have time to check on all postage all across the world) so I'd hope to keep it low. This isn't intended as a money-making venture for me, but more a way of helping other people connect, and helping them to spread the word about enjoying writing.

Thank you for your today's review of papers. I think that when you said "For those of you in America", speaking about your book, you did mean "For those of you in the United States", because I presume that you know that America is a continent, NOT a country whatsoever. Regards!

Sorry - it's the same as people speaking about "England" or "United Kingdom" or "British Isles" - each of which is discrete. However, I believe that for all the countries of the Americas, the book is on sale at the same time - from Canada to Argentina. Apologies, I should have been more careful.

Actually there is no continent called America. There is North America and South America for continents. America as a country only refers to the USA.

@@invaderzim1964 My comment was addressed to Mr Jecks, only. However, I thank you for your opinion. I have just learnt from you now that the OAS (Organization of American States) actually covers just the U.S. states (Alabama, Illinois, Florida, etc.), not the whole continent. But now I wonder why the label in front of the U.S. Representative says "United States", instead of "America"; who knows...

Just one more thing: then, Christofer Columbus discovered North America or South America?

@@raouldontneedthem3416 it's an easy look up question that I'm surprised you haven't done already. Since there is no Central American continent, Central America and the Caribbean are considered part of North America- wikipedia. Fyi, my original comment was not an opinion but a fact. The United States of America is the ONLY country in the entire world that has America as part of its name. That statement is also a fact and not an opinion.
