What makes cornel west so effective is that he works at an emotional, intellectual, and spiritual level. My brain was stimulated but when he said forgiveness is the highest form of love, I had to pause the video because I started crying, basically I broke down, and realizing how I refuse to forgive in my life and I had an epiphany and that’s why he’s so amazing because it’s like REAL self-help, substantive upliftment, intellectual stimulation, self-criticism, and structural and societal critique all in one. Cornel west is who Jordan Peterson wishes he was. Lol the more I listen to west the better I become as a person. I can’t describe it in words.

I respect both of these individuals very much - they have been more involved in all of these struggles than many of us commenting here. This must be acknowledged, period. Chris Hedges, a couple of years ago, hit the nail on the head, when he lamented the Death of Liberal Class. This is not just happening here in the US, but essentially world-wide, and many of us non-latte consuming liberals, recognized this 25 years ago, when Reagan and Thatcher advanced their reactionary theories, and the liberal parties in America and in Europe fell right in line. All of these issues boil down to economics, and in particular, neo-liberal and laisse-faire economics, which is nothing less than legalized bribery. The worst policies in terms of social cohension and a sense of fairness were further dismantled via the Social Democrats in Germany and other European nations, after the fall of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was an entrenched and corrupt system, and nobody is longing to have it back. But it's collapse initiated a system equally bad, with the ultimate goal of destroying all social safety nets everywhere, and with the ultimate goal of financalizing the entirety of human experience for profit. I remember Dr. West campaigning for Obama during his first run for office, while Chris Hedges was sceptical from the start. We all had high hopes back then, after the Bush disaster years, but probably none of us could have predicted, that the Obama administration would essentially tow the corporate line at every turn, and expand the surveillance state even further. No amount of intellectual prowness is equipped to counter this force, and as Chris has mentioned many times before, what we are witnessing today is mere spectacle. As far as the human values these two embody - I agree - as well as their rejection of the New Atheist movement, which is far too sure and arrogant in my view. It is one thing to uphold science and new discoveries as something good, but it quite another, once science becomes corrupted by big money, and the promise for profit down the line. The problem with trying to get this message out is this: most of the media are financed by huge corporations, and while Real News and other outlets can be supported, the vast majority of people is being dumbed down day by day, smart-phone by smart-phone, which will eventually make a democracy impossible. A democracy cannot function with an ill-informed populace, or an entire generation focused on the latest consumer goods, just to get by or to apply for a job, while barely getting by. By fostering a climate of competition amongst the population (globally), huge corporations and the financial industry has been busy consolodating their power, creating huge mergers and monopolies. This is taking place globally. Not all of these powers agree with each other, thus, the only competition taking place at this stage is a quest for dominance over the last remaining resources. The actual populations have very little input, if at all. So, the reality will be continued resource wars, mass starvation, genocide and savage wars for sheer survival. Meanwhile, the utopians over at Silicon Valley, have given up on humanity alltogether and want to project their own twisted brains into the future - a few multi-billionaires trying to infest other planets with their ridiculous hubris. I am perfectly ok with being mortal, and I understand the quest of these two people here in this interview, as far as their ethics are concerned, although I do not share any ambitions for martyrdom in any sense, as Chris sometimes does. We are merely a spec in the universe and nothing more. While still around, we should try to alleviate the suffering of others, whenever possible...that is all. But we must also perhaps recognize, that there will be no conscious afterlife whatsoever, after we die, which is why we try to have compassion, while still alive and here.

The larceny that has been going on for the past 6 1/2 years with nary a mention from the White House is destroying your present AND your future. And if you think tearing down the system is going to make things better for you, please point to one single example anywhere, at any time, in the history of mankind that you think serves as a good example of empowering the people so we can use it as an alternative. When you've come to your dead end on that write me back and I'll be happy to explain why people like Cornell West (and maybe you) may have their hearts in the right place but their heads in the clouds. As Brother Cornell is getting at, the World MUST institute sweeping changes, and global change-- incl climate change-- indicates that we must do it relatively quickly... this CAN be done, and the only thing stopping us-- humanity-- is inertia and fear. This has been the most bizarre thing about the Republican Party. In my experience, the majority of the members of communities of color tend to be economically and socially conservative. They are also more devoted to their faith. If the Republican Party had stuck to their 1980's talking points: fiscal conservatism, social conservatism (anti abortion, anti marriage equality, small federal government) etc., they would have had a much larger (and manageable) majority.

The real problem or challenge that people like Chris Hedges and Cornel West need to meet is to prove to people the power of the system vs the power of individual choice. Many people in the US have entirely bought into the idea that everyone is where they are in life by choice or if they are born in poverty then they should just work their way out of that. Every time I have an argument with somebody about these issues they always seem to hold to the idea that there is a just world and that Social Darwinism is reality. Ironically these same people have issues with The Theory of Evolution.

I can't blame everything on Trump but he's a wealthy elite and his supporters are antagonist, his demonizing groups,Democrats, countries, bullying tactics are against everything I stand for such as clean environment, helping the poor, public education opportunities without extreme usury, military spending tax money for unnecessary wars, I am pro 2nd amendment and a Constitutionist, I also believe that separation of church and state is necessary but not to the point of taking the higher power out of the pledge of allegiance, I respect war veterans, the wars are a benefit to the elite bankers only. I don't think that we should have only a 2 party system that divides the country, I have to admit that I have always supported Democrat until the Clinton's. Traditional values went out the door when Kennedy,MLK,RFK, Malcolm X, everyone that stood for humanity were killed in the 60's.There was great progress in the 60's against corporate monster,the EPA, Consumer Protection, Unions were strong, Nixon was exposed but people seem to forget how many people died to bring better ethics in the workplace and civil liberties.Executive orders are allowing the system of checks and balances to become a dictator dream. The procedure for making a bill or passing a law is violated,Congress is the only entity allowed to declare war.Tariffs on trade,an oversupply of goods,banks contractions of money, brought our ancestors the great depression.People lost their homes, everything.That's what I don't understand why Trump's policy is an economic disaster repeatedly being swept under the rug.Homeless people are increasing every day and this economy is booming, yeah with sub standard wages.15$/ hr won't support a single person who works 40hrs/wk.not when average rent is $1000/mo.without utilities.Oil companies don't pay taxes, Trump tax cuts benefits the ogliarchs. The middle class, what's left of it takes the hit on pensions are all in critical status because of corporate greed, social security and safety nets for the poor are being threatened by the republican admin.

***** Marcus is most likely talking about the Federal Reserve Bank and Fractional Reserve Banking. The Federal Reserve Bank is not a part of the U.S. Constitution. As far as I know it's banking charter was not updated in 2013, a century after it was established. No doubt congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), did his best to hold the Federal Reserve bank accountable while he was in office. Unfortunately Ron Paul chose not to run again in 2014. The Federal Reserve was created by a very tiny group of extremely wealthy and powerful bankers over a century ago in 1913. Fractional Reserve banking on the other hand is basically like printing money out of nothing with little or no collateral to back it up. The U.S. dollar as it stands today, has nothing backing it up besides a bloated military budget and a humongous un-payable debt. With all this in mind coconut shells and glass beads have more intrinsic value than the worthless U.S. dollar which has nothing backing it. Money is fine, but it would be best, if there was something backing it up, otherwise it's just funny money, as in the game of Monopoly. If you want true early capitalism you would need to go back to 17th century England and Holland. These are the places where modern capitalism was practiced in its nascent form. The system that's pervasive in the U.S. today as Chris Hedges explains is basically inverted totalitarianism. +Payhole Everdouche there is, in theory, something backing it: goods and services produced in the United States, which is then all GUESSED at by the "wizards of money" at the Fed ...they're a SCAM, "selling" cash to banks, etc., and all at "INTEREST", of course, xept for now, when the " system " is so screwed up they (the Fed) HAVE to sell it at even money just to keep the "system" GOING

My advice is...think outside the box! I bought a beachfront home in Central America, which I could not afford to buy in Florida or California. I only face racism when I return to the U.S. to visit family and friends. As I travel throughout Central and South America, I am amazed that more people of color have not done what non-color people have done. That being.....moving to a non-racist and economically cheaper country for wealth building. Truth be told, I can only stay in the U.S. on visits for less than 10 days because of racism, the police state, negative news broadcasting, consumerism 24/7, and the possibility I may get shot by police or criminals.

I hate saying this, because I'm afraid of being misinterpreted. I feel the the crux of the problem of injustice and wealth inequality is culture. Take brother West's argument about black elites who are turning their backs on their brothers and sisters in poor communities. I feel that they are turning their backs, not necessarily because they don't care, but because they want to distance themselves from that culture. Yes you could say both statements are the same, but there is a distinction. By nature when we don't like something, we try to do our best to distance ourselves from those problems. Trying to change things takes effort and requires an extra will that most people don't naturally use. So how do we stop or change gang violence? How do we change the behaviors of 16th St Gang? The McCarthyists would say lock them up. I say we created the 16th st gang because we locked them up, by locking them up we actually perpetuate violent gang culture. I say turn the prisons into rehabilitation centers teaching trade skills, English, literature, mathematics, sciences. One could say that some prisons already do that, which is true, but not all of them and some are worse than most. Changing that may take an act of legislation. Start a Gang that allows members to remain in their gang, but work together on legal defense and outward mobility, with only one rule and that's that they will try to do something good that makes things better for everybody. Or something simple like that, something that allows them to grow or evolve with roots aimed at a more positive outlook. We also need to find a way to change the culture of white supremacists. I always start to think that their archaic culture will go the way of the dinosaurs, and every time i think that they have gone away they raise their ugly head and show that they have been there the whole time. They are in our courthouses and our police forces and that is very dangerous. So what mechanisms do you use to change the idea of a culture that if you don't like something you step on it?
@donell3608 жыл бұрын
Learned Hand Carter G Woodson wrote about the same thing in the 1930's so it's not about the culture
@learnedhand76478 жыл бұрын
donell360 when I try to find an answer to WEB Dubois' infamous question, "how shall Integrity face oppression?" I first find myself questioning the nature of man. In that I find that we are all malleable, each and everyone of us is capable of such good deeds that even angels would weep. Yet just as capable of acts that would make demons shudder in fear. But part of what drives us is the culture that we choose to surround ourselves in or remove ourselves from. We should try to learn from other cultures as a way of broadening our perspective on our path in trying to better ourselves. But, how do you stop a white supremacist from being a white supremacist? Part of me feels that these people are broken, that they lack empathy, suffer from irrationally inflated ego, and refuse to see the world outside their limited self restrained perspective. However, we find these traits in multiple groups. I have also personally witnessed people who were originally racist and closed minded become welcoming to people of all races. Sometimes it takes a tragedy other times it's as simple as an introduction from a close friend, and a few jokes. I realise that people don't just change the way that they think over night, but I think that culture plants seeds in the way that we think.

Mass Education on a God concept that is panentheistic is critical. The essential spirituality found throughout Africa as well as the philosophy of G.W. Hegel show that all peoples come from one cosmic Source and that all conflicts and polarizations are part of the struggle that prepares us for a united Humanity eventually. Materialism is essentially the enemy that motivates white culture to try and crush that which it fears. Great ideas about reform in the prison system by the way.
@learnedhand76478 жыл бұрын
thenowchurch Meh, Mathematics is the true language and religion, without it, none would exist, you'd just have psychology. Our students should be taught mathematics with the Austrian Pythagorean - Kepler model with the Icelandic Athletic program, a British literature program, and a Germanic trades skill program. Religion should be treated as sacred and kept at home. In doing this we would be producing Tesla's, Schauberger's, Ben Franklin's, and Michael Jordan's by the boat load.
@thenowchurch64198 жыл бұрын
Learned Hand I did not say Religion. I was referring to an outlook that is open, inclusive and sees everything in the cosmos as part of one continuum. This is found in Shamanism and most ancient tribal spiritual systems. Modern physics (Quantum Mechanics and String Theory) tends to support this Oneness paradigm and is indeed based on Math. It is not a matter of spirituality vs mathematics but how both are part of one reality, at different levels and applications. We have to get out of Black and White, all or nothing thinking and into and-or-maybe logic. Apart from your omission of Hegel and Zazen meditation (proper breathing and posture are essential for successful life), I approve of your ideas. Peace.

4M. People would not know what to do with themselves. The power brokers enjoy having the masses work like slaves and beg to keep their measly jobs. The masses are not self-disciplined and self-motivated enough to create a useful satisfying life for themselves outside of that paradigm, as yet. With the right training on life , humanity , spirituality, the arts and festival culture, a new paradigm can be put in place, eventually.

If talking about a problem causes it, then not talking about it makes it go away. So, if i ignore that my child is a violent bully, he won't be a violent bully. If I pretend that my boss doesn't rub up against me inappropriately, he will stop. If I act like I don't notice feces on the street, it won't stink. Eff that. It's so obviously BS.

We need to work towards something else not so money focused as a whole as the righteous society we could have and will be And really how has campiagn finance reform gone ever? If I remember correctly, wasn't that an Obama promise too, like Gitmo and Immigration reform? We've seen the "truth" of those promises. The late Grace lee Boggs had it right in Detroit. Maybe we don't need the ones on top in all senses, gov. bussiness, jails, police etc. we can take care of our own if we realize that "small is beautiful" and take care of OUR communities! Whoever they may be. That homeless drug addict is your neighbor and might just need an ear to get back to making art or whatever, not a blight or something to be NIMBY'ed away. Good points made in this conversation, and real truth. I still have a problem with any person that would try to bring religion into the arena of solving social ills. Take any religions so called "moral compass", out of the solution, and I'm on board. I'm not saying Dr.West is preaching, just that we need to get away from the notion that religion's ideology is the ONLY path for morality. It is not.
@mycattitude9 жыл бұрын
+Furd Felmer I agree. It's not the only path, but at its best it is A path. I respect secular humanism, the morals are just as sound. I may be christian, but growing up in my faith and knowledge that the Bible is not perfect or to be read literally, I became a universalist, so I'm not the usual "my sky god is better than your sky god" type.
@furdfelmer43599 жыл бұрын
mycattitude You and many, many other christians with the same mindset, are NOT what us, non "believers" object to.You use your brain as it should be used. Our problem is with the constant hypocrisy and lies that come from the "extreme FAKE christians" that preach, hate in all forms, under the guise of doctrine. My hope is that more like yourself will "come out" and expose these fake crstians and expose them for their hateful message.That goes for ALL religion.. Afterall, the message is about peace, tolerance and understanding, not the agendas of preachers.
@mycattitude9 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks. That was a really positive message to wake up to. Yes, I do/have "come out" of my universalist closet and I'm very vocal. I have no problem opening up a can of well deserved woop-ass against the blindly dogmatic, or calmly reasoning w/ someone to show them a more excellent way.

All well and good Stephane Lauzon ~ but if your " Race Based " cultural theory were absolutely correct then the Nations of Sub Saharan Africa continent would be the perfect examples of social & economic equality. But unfortunately a majority of those country's have Native African led government's that are completely corrupt and dysfunctional. I wish the fact were different and we could lay the blame on skin color when in reality it is always a problem of money, power & class. I think Dr. West makes this very clear in this interview and you may want to give it another listen. ~ good luck

Is English your native language? Dr. West does not use too many big words in this. What you ought to do is read more. Get off KZbin. Go to a public library and pick up some books. Buy a dictionary and thesaurus and a notepad. Every time you encounter a word you do not understand, write it down. After finishing the chapter/paragraph, look up the word and write down the word and definition in your notepad. If you do this with everything you read, your vocabulary will grow. Do not be afraid of difficult books or essays. Your reading skill will rise to meet the challenge of the text. Your knowledge and understanding of language will grow. Here are some helpful resources: "How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading" by Mortimer J. Adler, Charles Van Doren "How to Read and Why" by Harold Bloom
