Idk, I get why Rachel exchanging gifts can be upsetting. But what's the point in having a bunch of stuff you don't enjoy and never use? It's just wasteful. She should communicate that better and maybe just share a wishlist of things she actually likes but if by the end of the day she exchanged it for something she actually uses and it still reminds them of the gifter, that's better than the original gift collecting dust in the far back of her closet.

Honestly, this one is on the writers, not the characters because Ross and co already know that about Rachel. The writers just forgot they know. It came up in Season 2 during the episode The One with the Two Parties. Ross and the rest of them should not be surprised or upset because this is information they already have about their friend lol. and beyond that imo if you're continually getting people gifts they don't like or won't use, you should pay more attention to your friends.

I do think rachel should have just been honest about the gifts she didn’t like from the start to avoid people finding out and getting hurt in the future obvs, but I don’t see any problem with exchanging gifts otherwise. I would feel bad if I bought someone something, even if I thought they’d like it, and it just sat in their closet forever collecting dust because they disliked it so much but was too afraid to tell me. I’d much rather they did whatever they wanted with it, including exchanging it, to get something they actually liked and used. In that way, the money I spent would still be a factor in them getting something that does make them happy, which is all that matters to me ultimately. Of course, this only applies to material items like clothes/jewelry etc. I would obviously be hurt if I made something special by hand or gave something of important sentimental value, like a painting I made or something, and they sold it. In all fairness to rachel, if all my friends kept buying me things I didnt like so much that I wanted to return or exchange them, I’d question why my friends didn’t know me well enough to know what I would like lol. Kind of like when a relative only knows one of your interests from a decade ago and thats still the only thing they ever buy for you even though you’ve changed since then lol💀

Not everyone reacts well to disliked gifts. I don't see the point in telling people you don't like what they give you. My mom does it worse. When she doesn't like a gift - she re-gifts it to someone else. The problem is she doesn't remember who gave it to her. She's given my gifts back to me at different occasions. I'll give her something for her birthday and she'll give it back to me as a gift for Christmas. I can see when she gives my gifts to other people too. Personally, I'd rather just not know.

Chandler just kissed her and then she broke up with him and he told the truth. I can’t see that being a huge betrayal considering Joey and Kathy weren’t official and he was literally on a date with another woman. So that’s why it matters. If he and Kathy were married it would be different. Or even if Joey and she still weren’t official but she had Chandler had slept together. Or just that she and Chandler had kissed but not told. I just think this was handled the best way it could have. Chandler didn’t want to ask Joey to step aside before he even knew of Kathy liked him.

I had an Aunt growing up who requested gift receipts with all Christmas gifts. If she didn’t think you spent enough, she asked for more money to make up her difference. My grandfather canceled Christmas on that side of the family because of her. i think I was 8 or so. The rest of that side gets along well just not with her or her kids. It’s interesting that even Joey says “eww”, when we know he’s slept with a woman and then her mother before. Maybe it’s because Monica was serious with Richard and would have married him, becoming the stepmother, which probably added to the ick factor. .. As for Rachel exchanging gifts, it’s a tough one. For me, I think I’d assume that “random” gifts she hadn’t specified she liked were not the best to give her, so I’d either get her something I knew she wanted (maybe pitch in with others if it was expensive) or get her a gift card for a shop she loves. I’d probably do the same for the others too. I feel like Joey and Phoebe would be the easiest to buy for. I like giving thoughtful gifts, but I also know that many people are particular about some things (eg. clothes, jewellery, scented candles/perfumes, etc.), so would avoid giving those unless it was something I knew they liked/wanted. I’d be a little upset if they exchanged something I really put effort into, but I understand people wanting things they can use. It can be hard to communicate with people when you appreciate the thought put into a gift, but it isn’t your thing and you don’t want to offend them or have them waste their money on things you aren’t keen on.

I've got an unpopular opinion, but the treatment of Chandler absolutely was not justified. Chandler DID tell Joey during the first episode with Kathy that he was into Kathy. Joey, who is a crappy boyfriend or whatever he was with Kathy, didn't even want to give her a birthday present, and we found out that a woman he dated for years he never gave a birthday present. Then, Joey is fooling around with another woman while dating Kathy--to the point that he's got dates with both the same night. And he expects Chandler to babysit Kathy while he's on a date with another woman who Kathy doesn't know about. When Kathy and Chandler's kiss happened, Joey was with the other woman. And the comparison between Joey and Kathy with Ross and Rachel is ridiculous. Ross had a crush on Rachel for years, which after Rachel was on the show, Joey actually hit on her. Joey knew Kathy for a couple of weeks and wasn't even being with just her. I like Joey most of the time, but he's a jerk in this plot. Joey, during this plot, was a self-entitled man-child throwing a tantrum.

I want to agree with what you said but you’re clearly forgetting some plot points as well. We can’t forget that he wasn’t mad at Kathy about it. He was only mad at Chandler. While he wasn’t totally committed to Kathy at first, like you said, he was also ready to commit more to her. Can’t forget the part where he said that he was gonna pick her out of the 2 women he was going out with. So when Joey finally decides to do that, he finds out his best friend Chandler had kissed her and it was the same friend that encouraged him to be with only one in the first place. I think there’s still plenty of reason for Joey to view it as a betrayal. Also you totally missed the part where Joey thought Chandler was just pretending, when he told him about the feelings. Overall if Chandler was upfront in the beginning without hiding it, then it wouldn’t have turned out the way it did

So, I may have an unpopular opinion here but I don't agree with the idea that Chandler was in the wrong. Joey treated Kathy like she was replaceable and didn't respect her as a person by dating the other girl while he was dating her. Chandler genuinely cared for Kathy as a human being. I don't see what Chandler did as worse than what Joey was doing himself. Joey was cheating for sex, Chandler was in a tough place for a woman he cared about. Two very different things. Joeys reaction is insanely out of bounds in my opinion.

Joey is way over reacting, yes Chandler made a mistake and should have told Joey of his feelings for Kathy before it happened. But Joey was seeing a another girl behind her back without her knowledge and he should have asked Kathy if it was okay if he was seeing another girl at the same time. Joey was unfaithful first, Chandler made a mistake and Joey is overreacting!

I really feel you on that. I've been having memory/cognitive issues since after I got covid, it's literally getting worse each year and my doctor just said whelp it happens nothing we can do sorry. I'm terrified I'm gonna lose my job which isn't exactly hard to do it's just gotten that bad, so it's hard not to cry about it.
