James and Mabel Johnson (Murvyn Vye and Kathleen Freeman) accidentally back their car into the Clampetts’ vehicle outside the Commerce Bank. Initially, they assure the family that no one was hurt. However, upon learning of the Clampetts’ wealth, the Johnsons fake injuries and file a lawsuit against them. During the trial, the Clampetts struggle to navigate the formalities of the courtroom, prompting the Judge (Roy Roberts) to grant them some leniency. Mabel hobbles into court on crutches while James arrives in a wheelchair, spinning a fabricated tale of the Clampetts crashing into them while drunk. Misunderstanding their claims, Jed assures the Judge that the family will gladly help track down the real culprits, only to have the Judge clarify that they are the ones being accused. As the Clampetts' unfamiliarity with court decorum causes disruptions, they are briefly jailed for their behavior.
When the trial resumes, the Clampetts bring homemade food into the courtroom, further baffling the proceedings. The Johnsons’ Attorney (Dean Harens) questions the family but repeatedly cuts them off whenever they attempt to explain that they didn’t cause the accident. Frustrated, the Judge finally allows Jed to tell his side of the story. As Jed speaks, the Johnsons’ fabricated tale begins to fall apart, raising doubts even for their attorney. The case unravels completely when Mabel unexpectedly learns about James’ secret girlfriend, exposing their dishonesty and casting their lawsuit into disarray.
