Interesting enough, when Little Mix was on the X factor, they tried to push Perrie to be the leader and was given the most solos, but she refused since the beginning, instead focusing on little mix being equal. Liam’s claim was more accurately that the group was formed around him, which actually was likely. Simon wanted to make a boyband. Liam was a returning contestant. And he had the best audition of the boys. In the first couple live show performances on X Factor, Liam was clearly the frontman. That shifted as Harry became more popular. By the end of the season, you could see Harry has already come more into the forefront. By the time they released their debut album, Harry was the clear face of the group, while he, Liam, and Zayn mostly split leads. With that said, Liam showed his ass and then some.

It’s crazy how people didn’t believe Liam when he said that he was told that he could have been the leader. listen to the first two albums, watch the X Factor performances, then watch him start most of the songs on tour and you see Liam take the lead for most of it. Now the video from X Factor drops with Nicole saying that yes indeed he could be the leader. He never lied at all. He just explained what someone said to him not that he himself believed it. Also if you were young and gaslighted by a crooked music industry predator who gives you’re supposed spot to someone else after all of your sacrifices it might leave you a bit jaded. He speaks honestly about this in his music when he says that he was jaded and he’s self medicated. Liam himself talks about how misunderstood he is and again he isn’t lying people just love to hate him. People would have crumbled with a fraction of the pressure that was put on him yet they have the nerve to stand in judgment and speak on a person that they don’t even know.

Disagree about Betty White. As much as I loved her, the only reason she suddenly became the embodiment of the Bad Ass Old Lady meme was due to Bea Arthur passing in 2009. Bea had been enjoying a resurgence of popularity through stuff like Futurama, and when they randomly asked her to Comedy Central's Roast for Pamela Anderson. Had she not have died in 2009 of lung cancer, I guarantee she would have become the face of memes like Betty White did, Bea would have been on Hot in Cleveland, and been cast as the fiesty grandmother in bit roles for movies. That's not even the first time it's happened-- just look at Kevin James's career. Many of his roles are more or less the same doofy fat guy that relies on a lot of prat falls and physical comedy to get laughs. It might not seem very out of place... until you look at films like the 'Grown Ups' series with Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider-- a mini SNL reunion, or 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry', or the Adam Sandler produced 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' and you realize those roles were for Chris Farley. Chris Farley _was_ *that* comedian on SNL, and he was best friends with Sandler, Spade, and Schneider... but Farley died of a drug overdose in 1997. Had Farley kept his nose clean, he would have absolutely gotten the role on The King of Queens, and would keep appearing in Adam Sandler films - but sadly he didn't. Farley really idolized John Belushi (another SNL comedian that did the same humor as Farley, and arguably would have gone on to have every role in film his brother Jim Belushi got from 1982 through the 90s for being "John Belushi's brother", and would have starred in the "According to Jim" sitcom-- which obviously would have been titled "According to John"), and wanted to model his entire life after the comedian, which unfortunately meant also developing a drug problem like Belushi, and dying young like Belushi too.

There was actually a lot of hype behind Ally's debut work. Her first 3ish singles did moderately well, they all charted on at least 1 chart. She is no doubt the best singer of the group vocally, and honestly probably top 20 vocalist of this generation. Great belts, good support, good larynx placement, vocal control, fairly healthy lower register and okayish high register. She can really be something great... if she had the team to help her. But all 3 of these girls have tapered off. It's really just Normani and Camila. Still think Ally has potential, and Lauren has a very dedicated fan base. There could be a future for them. But it's been 6 years now... should've had solo work released within 2-3 years MAXIMUM because now the hype has worn off and the market is flooded with new artists like Billie and Olivia Rodrigo to steal the spotlight that they could've had. Normani has a hugely dedicated fanbase, but even then she's not making as many waves as I'd have thought after Love Lies and Dancing With A Stranger making top 10. An interesting solo career for everyone in 5H. Lots of wasted potential, but hopefully something comes out of it all

Out of all the four of them, I think Ally got the most projects and work experience and I'm so proud of her. She got to be in DWTS, performed in Miss Universe, in different US and Spanish shows, starred in a movie, published a book, etc. She have achieved so much, but her team really need to promote her well and give her the right music and sound that fits her vocals. And for Dinah, i feel so sad that she was so left behind, her management is trash. She have sooooo many good songs but they were all flopped. It's sad. Dinah is also one of the best vocalists in our generation. Dinah and Normani are more likely the Beyoncé of Fifth Harmony, it's just Camila have more the star quality from the very start. And for Lauren, she's also one of the faves in the group, but she didn't do well as a solo, well, she doesn't really care about the super fame, billions of stream/views, she's now an independent artist and wanted to creatively write her art and share it to the fans. That's what matter to her now. So, overall, i hope that five of them have better management. I also think Epic records is still holding them on their necks, which blocks the 4 from releasing their debut albums and doing bigger solo projects...

as a kpop fan for almost 10 years i think that there's less favoritism now in this new generation than before. Suzy from Miss A, Hyuna from 4minute are just some examples from 2gen kpop. I think that the agencies started to realize that's way more beneficial for them to keep the artists in the label and make more money out of solo activities, including acting, modeling and stuff (since kpop agencies are not just about music)

I completely agree! I think 3rd gen and 4th gen groups don't tend to have a Beyoncé as you say, with the only exceptions I can think of being IOI from whom we get Chungha for example (and also Somi sort of), and from IZ*ONE Wonyoung too. Another example of 2nd gen favouritism is Sistar, from which we obviously got Hyolyn herself. 2NE1 had CL, another example. MAMAMOO has Hwa Sa now (3rd gen), but to be fair the other three members also get solo promotions. I also remember how in 2018 Jennie was painted by YG to be the Beyoncé of BLACKPINK right before her solo era, when she was in the white outfit and the other members were in black (similar to what Starship did with IVE and Wonyoung recently) and that was favouritism. It'll be interesting to see if Nayeon becomes the Beyoncé of twice after her solo debut, or if JYP will give other members equal opportunities. Sorry this was super long; I just felt super happy to see another Kpop stan! :)

@@jai6888 Nayeon feels to me more like a Camila situation. She still feels very forced down my throat 9/10 TWICE songs. She gets the first center, and the first line, and the chorus, and the adlibs, and the best outfits, etc. It's a bit much. Specially considering a couple of her fellow members are just as good as her if not better. She feels pushed because the label chose to and not because she's more talented than the other girls or because it was a natural response of the fan base to gravitate towards her. It's even more aggravating since TWICE fans are constantly asking for more time to shine from other members. And don't get me wrong. I actually really enjoy Nayeon, but when I first came into TWICE, Nayeon really put me off because it felt like they were trying to convince me she was the best rather than letting me decide on my own who I liked. Which made me dislike her for a while until she grew on me. She's clearly very talented and charismatic and likeable, but still it would be nice to be able to appreciate that on my own rather than having it forced.

@@jodavitow I do completely see where you're coming from. Looking at any TWICE line distribution videos, Nayeon is first 90% of the time and it gets alarming. Sometimes TWICE becomes Nayeon and friends. I feel like recently they've been improving that by creating more killing parts for other members, with songs like Scientist and Alcohol Free giving other members good parts (Momo's bridge in Scientist or the Dubchaeng rap duo in Alcohol Free come to mind). Regardless, Nayeon was top 3 with regards to line distribution for both songs so your point still stands. The issue is that from debut, Nayeon's official role has been the face of the group, like Jennie from BLACKPINK or more recently aespa's Karina, and so having the most lines and being centre all the time is part of her position. I do agree completely that TWICE ought to be more balanced in how they go about achieving this, and I think rby allowing members to write their own b-sides and by having sub-unit tracks in Formula of Love, we are on the right track.

@@jai6888 yeah but let's look at a group like ITZY, which is the same label. Ruyjin is center and face of the group too but she doesn't feel shoved down our throats. All of them get their moments to shine, who starts the songs varies, center position is constantly changing, they even started doing some variation for center in the final "crown pose" they do, they started including chae into the chorus line, etc. ITZY is a group that actually feels like they make an effort to showcase all of their members more or less equally. TWICE is 100% my favorite kpop girl group but very often it just feels like the Nayeon show featuring Jihyo

Harry styles seemed like he took being a musician seriously the most out of them because he was planning a head of his career and trying to learn as much as he can while he was in the band as he said himself. He knew he was charming and charismatic so what he needed was to get better at making music. He went and did a lot of songwriting with professionals outside of oneD. He was practicing a lot and kept a lot his songs outside of the band and for himself, even while in the band he worked and focused on getting better at his job so he could have a successful solo career. He took being at one direction as being in Uni, he worked smart and hard and once he graduated from it his hard work paid off. Actually Camila was definitely the favorite in in the fandom by far. Along with Ally, Normani was the least popular in the fandom. Literally 75% of the fandom left when Camila left😭This is why their last album together flopped terribly because our fandom was in shambles. Everyone in that dumb fandom ignored Normani and we know exactly why :( This is why Normani will always have my love and support. She didn’t have the label push that Camila had. She didn’t even have a lot of fans. All she had was her talent. She was an underdog and still managed to be successful dispute being overlooked by the fans and the label. I knew the amount of potential she had the first time I saw her. Everybody was saying her solo career wasn’t going to do well. Look at her now. Even today people still underestimate her. Which made the general public ignore them, and caused the label to give even less money and promotion for their next singles. I would also argue Dinah and Ally were last in popularity. I appreciate the breakdown because a lot of people are lost on what being “the Beyoncé” means and this was a great explanation! I will say tho, while the public goodwill of group members like Liam and Camila has soured for obvious and deserved reasons, to say they weren’t more popular members in their groups is a bit of a stretch. As someone around the 1D fandom and DEEP in the 5H fandom during the 2010s, Camila was by far the most popular member in 5H by all accounts and Liam was maybe second or third with Louis and Niall being the most forgotten. 5H initially started with both Camila and Lauren pushed as lead members in different ways. Their dynamic was definitely more “marketability” influenced than 1Ds. With their fan demographic being mostly white and Latina girls at first, they positioned the group to mostly serve that demographic by marketing the white Latina (Lauren) and the light skinned brown Latina (Camila) together. Lauren’s push as one of the main girls in the group seemed to wane a bit as she became more outspoken, rebellious, and disillusioned with the idea of being a pop star. By the Reflection era, Normani was becoming a co-#2 in the group while Dinah and Ally remained in the background, and even after Camila left Lauren and Normani were still positioned as the lead members despite Dinah taking over as stage general during their tours. But it was definitely very intentional how their team attempted to push Camila over the other girls once the group really started rolling. So much to the point where Normani had to share her chorus lead (Bo$$) with Camila live but choruses they both sang on (like Worth It) were only given to Camila live. You definitely nailed how they tried to make Camila’s voice recognizable with their sound.

@iosashes20872 жыл бұрын
@@naomi.cannibal LOL same! I always loved and appreciated how Lauren never held back from speaking her mind. I really don’t blame her for being over it earlier than the other girls based on how they were being treated. I think all of the girls handled stuff very differently. The stuff that Ally has spoken about going through since their hiatus is haunting as it seems it was miserable for her specifically from the beginning. Camila I think was just happy to have friends and fame at that point since she didn’t have either at first. When the relationships started souring is when she started acting distant. Looking back on it, it’s very obvious why Camila and Normani are the most successful ones because they really wanted it the most. They wanted to be stars. Lauren I think wanted to, but she saw what she’d have to do and said “ain’t no way” lol. Ally wants it in a way but I think she can also be her own worst enemy when it comes to direction. Dinah always had the talent but not necessarily the ambition. She was pretty much there to sing, have fun, and help provide for her family. At the end of the day, it seems they were all suffering and being out against each other by a whole machine designed to break people down and get maximum use out of them. Based on more recent words from Lauren, Camila, and Dinah, their story of the breakup is starting to be pretty cohesive and fair that not one of them was solely responsible but it was a result of the powers around them not doing their job.

I think your analysis was spot on especially when it comes to long term solo success which is key. Simply because there have been artists that have been popular but once they went solo they couldn't keep long term solo success outside of the group. Someone mentioned Nicole from Pussycat dolls, some who say she was the Beyonce of the group as she was the most popular but based on your wonderful analysis I would say she wasn't because once she went solo, she couldn't maintain her solo success. Same thing I would say of Coko & Nicci Gilbert of the 90s groups SWV & Brownstone. Both women did 90plus % of the lead vocals and got the most attention, but once they went solo both women got a rude awakening when they couldn't maintain the success they had with their groups. Subsequently both women ended up going back to their groups. This goes to show as you pointed out to be the Beyonce of the group not only do you need to be the most popular of the group, but ones solo success must be just as popular and long term. Great video!

I remember when 5H launched I gravitated towards her even though I knew she didn’t have the best voice or was the best dancer she just had a confidence and star quality to her and then the label started to push her as the lead and give her so much more attention than the other girls that it was impossible to imagine 5H without her. And since becoming a solo artist she has developed a unique style and artistry plus has a bunch of A list celeb friends and had a high profile relationship that she is just in a different league to her former band mates. They told Dinah and Lauren that if they want to have parts in their songs they must lose the thick strong voice. Normani, Ally, and Dinah always got the short end of the stick in comparison to Camila and Lauren even though they were arguably more talented and dedicated to the group working. To me, the Beyoncé of the group is someone who has that undeniable quality that comes off organically. But it has to be someone who is talented enough where you can shine alone, but ultimately ELEVATE the group as well. So far, the only Beyoncé of the group is Beyoncé from Destiny's Child.

I think the “Beyoncé” of any group would the the member or members who are writing the music, has a key part in the vocal production, and probably rehearses more than the other members of the group. If they all do that then I think it’s hard to select THAT member. I definitely think she is who she is because of what she contributed to build the groups name.

Kelly Rowland was the first of Destiny’s Child to get a solo #1 single, and while she hasn’t stayed as successful as Beyonce in the music industry, she’s still stayed booked and blessed all these years with lucrative TV gigs and even some well received industry award performances. Every few years she puts out a song or album just to remind people she’s still that girl that grew up being trained alongside Beyonce and can absolutely share a stage with her when the need arises. Years later, we discover that in the crucial early years of the girls going solo, Kelly was trapped in an abusive relationship that had an effect on her success. Also, her debut album was rushed out instead of Beyonce’s, because Dilemma was #1 on the charts in 2002 so they delayed Beyonce’s debut to rush Kelly’s out. I feel like Matthew and Tina Knowles genuinely wanted Kelly to be successful, but they just didn’t manage her career as well as Beyonce’s. I feel like Zayn was the Kelly Rowland of One Direction. Someone with early individual success and a distinct fanbase that preferred him, but who for personal reasons did not quite go on to achieve as much as his early displays of talent promised.

@aceblanks76582 жыл бұрын
@@rhianx Oh yea that’s not a rumor. That’s definitely a fact. Beyoncé was to release in 2002 to come off the heels of Austin Powers and “Work It Out” (I LOVE THE SONG MYSELF) which was technically suppose to be her first single but since it didn’t do so well they kept it as an AP3 soundtrack song. Kelly and Nelly released “Dilemma” and since that song became a smash they decided to push Kelly forward and use the song to propel her album which the only thing that made that bad was they had to rush record the album. So that’s how Beyoncé went last. They wanted the girls to not compete in the same windows so Kelly released Oct 2002 and Bey June 2003. Michelle had already released her album first April 2002.

I do think Joe was the Beyonce thanks to camp rock. Back in the day, nick was better vocally and he did had a lot of fans, maybe thanks to his romances with Miley and Selena. I do think he wasn't happy with Joe having more fans, so he initiated the breakup. Weirdly enough tho, Nick had better music and he was more successful as a soloist (at first). Maybe Joe waited too long to launch his debut, but it flopped. He was still someone and he was always dating famous women, which gave him time, and when dnce came out their songs were everywhere, and i do think the band helped him develop his vocal skills and charisma as a front man. Nowadays he's better than Nick but maybe not as famous. I remember how big Nick's wedding was in pop culture compared to most things Joe did. Getting the band back together was definitely a good idea but they're falling off a bit commercially.

Really good video, here’s how I’d put your theory onto two girl groups that you may not be as familiar with as an American- Girls Aloud and Sugababes. *Girls Aloud* was formed in 2002 on the reality television show, Popstars: The Rivals which saw a competition between a put together girl group and a boy band. They formed with 5 members: - Cheryl Tweedy (later Cole) - Nadine Coyle - Kimberly Walsh - Sarah Harding (RIP) - Nicola Roberts Due to the pretty tacky time in the 2000’s where women were put against one another in the media and sex appeal was deemed more important in groups, the “Beyoncé” of Girls Aloud was defined on who was deemed as the most attractive of the 5. Cheryl was deemed as such, despite her arguably having less talent than her other members. Will.I.Am began solo work with her in 2008 and the rest was history with Cheryl releasing #1 hits such as “Fight for this Love” in 2009. Because Nicola Roberts was deemed as the “ugliest” in Girls Aloud (bearing in mind we are talking about the tacky tabloid time of the 2000’s), she wasn’t given as much of a spotlight as her other band members, Nicola was often given the least lines to sing and the least amount of spotlight in music videos. When they broke up in 2010, Nicola went solo after Cheryl, releasing a moderately successful album in 2011. Until now, Nicola was discarded in the group and it took a winning appearance on the Masked Singer for her vocal talent to be recognised. Cheryl was obviously the favourite with the other members given less attention and ultimately, less successful music careers. Sarah was the last to go solo in 2015 but she tragically passed away in September 2021 of breast cancer. ----------------- *Sugababes* was formed in 1998 with the members Keisha Buchanan, Siobhan Donaghty and Mutya Buena, ranging between ages 13-14 when the group formed. They first released music in 2000 with their song “Overload”. Siobhan was given the most vocal time and music video time in that song and then in their subsequent album “One Touch”. Siobhan left soon after, sighting mental health struggles, where she was replaced by Heidi Range. This replacement allowed for them to have two #1’s with “Freak Like Me” and “Round Round” in 2002. It was there where Mutya was arguably given most of the spotlight and media attention, often having the most of the singing even though not by that much (you can see this on the first verse of “Too Lost In You” 2003 for example). Mutya left in 2005 following “Taller In More Ways” sighing postpartum depression after she gave birth to her daughter Tahlia at 20. This allowed for Mutya to be replaced by Amelle Berrah. Keisha was most senior in the group, being the original one left although the media narrative made her seem like a bully like how the U.K. media plaster that serious label on any famous black woman it seems without any evidence. Meanwhile, Mutya worked on solo work as a solo singer in 2007. She wasn’t hugely successful but gained a loyal following with songs like “Song 4 Mutya” and “Real Girl”. Amelle wanted to start more solo work around 2007/2008 from the publicity that came from being the new girl in Sugababes. Keisha disagreed, arguing that it wasn’t fair on her given that it seemed as if Amelle was using the opportunity created for her by Mutya’s postpartum depression selfishly. With this, Keisha was reported as being a “bully” and was sacked in 2009- allegedly with input by Amelle and Heidi. Keisha was replaced by Jade Ewen who was a U.K. Eurovision entry for 2009. Heidi was arguably the favourite as this point. The group didn’t do well after Keisha was forced out and was arguably the reason why it was successful after Mutya and Siobhan were replaced. At no point for Sugababes was there necessarily a “Beyoncé”. Nobody had an overwhelmingly successful solo career after (only Mutya’s got much attention) yet after the departure of the most popular members (until Keisha), the group still survived.

Now the video from X Factor drops with Nicole saying that yes indeed he could be the leader. He never lied at all. He just explained what someone said to him not that he himself believed it. Also if you were young and gaslighted by a crooked music industry predictor who gives you’re supposed spot to someone else after all of your sacrifices it might leave you a bit jaded.

I think Blackpink has a very particular case because all of the members are known on their own and with success at that but contrary to Little Mix, the fans are not equally loving to all the members, but rather the 4 of them have huge solo fanbases. I feel like Lisa is the most popular overall but not by much, imo.

Lauren, Dinah, and Ally have so much more to offer but as time goes by and their label not doing their job promoting them properly, the hype wasn't the same anymore. They still have a solid fanbase especially Lauren and Ally, but not as much as before they took their hiatus. Not to mention their VMA performance which got misunderstood by everyone and got them tons of hate and got people side with Camila, portraying her as the victim in all that mess. Normani doing great with her releases especially with Wild Side, but the hype isn't as much as it would be if she released an album and got promoted properly. I'm sad for these girls. They're all hella talented and they could showcase more of their potential but a lot of people turn their backs on them and Camila got all the spotlight, praises, attention and hype of the people. Didn't mean that she doesn't deserve it, it's just the way the four of them were treated vs her since the start was very biased already.

One of the reasons why I love Blackpink is because there’s no main member, they don’t even have a leader. Yes Lisa and Jennie are undoubtedly the most popular member and Jisoo receives the least lines but I think all the girls are treated very well and compared to most groups their individual popularity is very balanced and if one girl decided to leave I think the whole group would crash and burn, they all contribute something important and have very distinct brands and devoted solo fans. They even all have their own solo releases (although Jisoo hasn’t gotten hers yet she has said she is not ready to pursue it yet and even got her own kdrama so i think the way they’re treated is extremely fair compared to other groups each girl always gets a chance to shine….but blinks overreact and throw around the word favouritism A LOT when they’re no where near as bad as other kpop groups like twice)

What happened to Fifth Harmony is exactly what defines a "Beyonce" to a group. The label usually knows who "sells the group" more than the rest and the fans finds out down the line who is that one person that keeps coming back with more work and more creativity, plus the guts to face the public and criticism alone. This is how it went down for Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Camila Cabello. The others members of the groups were giving room to shine at some point but were not able to keep the momentum going. That does not mean they failed, it just means the "Beyonces" were simply more ambitious, more creative and harder workers.

By DK’s second album she was the strongest writer and even vocal produced a lot of their tracks during the writing sessions.
