Archaeology confirms that the Bible gets it right when it gives the details describing Jesus' crucifixion. Physical remains from other crucified men reveal that the facts stated in the Bible match Roman history. Why does the Bible get the details right? Because it tells a true story!

I am a nurse. This topic is one that has intrigued me for years and I have researched it but am not an expert on crucifixions. However, I might be able to help explain how crucifixions were possible and also perfected for the sole intention of inflicting the most pain and prolonging the most suffering. Actually the word “excruciating “ stems from the meaning “out of the cross” to describe this type of pain. When I found that out I honestly stopped using that term to describe my own chronic pain because it’s nothing compared to what Christ and so many others suffered on the cross. Take your your left hand and trace the back of your right middle finger all the way to your wrist. At the base of your wrist you should feel a hole when you bend the wrist joint forward or backwards. You can feel it directly on the palm side of your wrist as well. If you don’t, you may have a hardened lump where ganglion cysts form which is what I had surgically removed so I know how painful that area can be. The Romans through trial and error used this hole as a reference. The metacarpal bones of the wrist are attached through ligaments and articular cartilage that when penetrated can separate the bones in the joint enough for a nail to be driven in. The bones then lock around the nail since there are several along with the radius and ulna arm bones. I believe they slightly bent the wrist to find the natural hole there and drive it in. Once a nail is driven into that spot it allows the person the ability to pull up on the nail to be able to expand their chest enough to inhale and exhale. Exhalation is the hardest to do in the crucified position. You feel like you can’t catch your breath and I believe it would be similar to someone having an asthma attack that never ends. (I could be wrong on that but I imagine that would be the feeling). Shallow breaths are what you can manage to take when you can’t properly exhale if you can’t pull yourself up. Furthermore, If the nail is done in the center of the hand it will rip through and be unable to hold the weight of the person. The bones locking around the nail hammered into the wood of the cross allow the person to be held there. The amount of suffering truly is heartbreaking and terrifying. In addition, there are several nerves and tendons that run through that site. When it’s pierced or penetrated, it will cause searing pain throughout the hand and up the arm to the neck. It can also trigger severe migraines and crippling muscle spasms. Many paintings depict the forearms roped to the horizontal beam of the cross as well which gives added support to the body weight. Over time, the only way the person can breathe is to pull up on the wrist and push down on the ankle joints nailed in. Someone can last many hours this way versus just a couple hours if done another way. Remember: maximum pain infliction and prolonged suffering was the goal of Roman execution not only for the psyche of their enemies, but for the person on the cross. There is a similar area in the ankle joint as well that allows for this to happen if they didn’t provide a wedge under the feet for the person to push against so they can breathe. Sometimes they added a wedge to prolong suffering further. It’s been said that Jesus lasted about 6-9hours on the cross and I believe that’s entirely possible if He was nailed in this manner. I hope this makes sense and helps you understand the price He paid for us. **edited with paragraphs and added grammatical fixes per special request to help some people avoid eye strain.. I also added a couple more sentences for a better description than my original posting. @DL I did my best but it’s been a hot minute since I took English classes in college. 🙂 ***

I believe the nail shown in the heel bone was unable to be retrieved because it was driven through the heel bone. In my opinion they would not want to lose the nails this way. They would want to be able to reuse them since they did hundreds of crucifixions in a day sometimes. I believe the Roman’s switched it to the ankle joint which would separate the metatarsal bones and lock them in place rather than straight through bone which is harder to retrieve later. However I believe this nail driven into the heel bone was left for someone to find because it dated to the time of Jesus and could be proven to show crucifixions did occur. So that in our time people can see and believe… The nazis perfected their methods of execution and torture just like the Roman’s did so there may have been one way done in the beginning before they realized you can use the bones as an ally to lock around the nail without breaking them and thus allowing for nails to be pulled back out and reused later on another crucifixion. It’s why doctors amputate at the joint rather than going straight through bone. Does that make sense? I hope I explained it ok

@Derrick Bridges oh thank you so much for the educational info. I really appreciate it. I don’t think all Roman’s are bad actually and I apologize if my comments came off that way. That was never my intention. The science behind the crucifixions and how they managed to do all that is incredibly complex from just a simple looking structure which a lot of people don’t even realize. That’s what I was trying to explain best I could. God bless you and thank you so much for sharing! I appreciate you!

Great video! I'm a hobby blacksmith and have sold my stuff around the world. Knives, bottle openers, corkscrews, whatever. One of the most popular items was what I called Easter Nails. A piece of 5/8" rebar forged down, four sides tapered to a point with a head exactly as shown at 5:44. I sold them in sets of three. At one point, a priest from just outside of Rome (I live in Winnipeg, Canada) contacted me saying that after years of looking (really?) he found mine which were, from his research, the closest to the Roman crucifixion nails as he could find. Needless to say, a bunch went there. When I saw the nail at 5:44, I jumped off of the couch and shouted, "My nail! I'm right!" Not that that makes any difference but many said they would never be that well made and structured since they were used only to kill.

Mr. Joel Kramer. Great video. 1. Looking at the nail it's clear the tip of the nail was bent backwards deliberately so it wouldn't come out. This was a common practice in carpentry before the pneumatic nail guns. My dad was a carpenter and this one of the first things he thought me when I started working with him. Nail that would portrude a board would be bent backwards. 2. The fact that more than one nail was found driven into bones is an indication the nails weren't reused. This I think strengthens the argument that the nail was bent backwards deliberately.
@SimonASNG
@SimonASNG 11 ай бұрын
Except that we know the Romans didn't waste their expensive nails if they could re-use them. The fact that the romans crucified many thousands of people, but we only found a handful of nails is an indication that the nails were almost always re-used. Probably the bent nail had just been used a few too many times and the soldier was just too tired to bother smashing the guy's heel to get it back.

As many people that were killed in this manner by the Romans, it doesn't make logistical sense they would take the time and extra timber to make a cross. The Bible uses the Greek word xyʹlon as a synonym for stau·rosʹ. (Acts 5:30; 1 Peter 2:24) This word means “wood,” “timber,” “stake,” or “tree.” The Companion Bible concludes: “There is nothing in the Greek of the New Testament even to imply two pieces of timber.” There is also no record of 1st century Christians using a cross in worship, but tons of records of it being used in Pagan worship. Would love to see a video from you digging into this subject.

Surely the various timbers could be reused multiple times? One cross could have been used for multiple crucifixions. Which makes it even more horrifying.

Hello Fdm when our savior was on the cross he did say the words Eli Eli Sa Bach Ta Na, my god, my god why hast thou forsaken me . And so if you were to see that our savior was on a mission to fulfill the law and the prophets which means that he was fulfilling every event that took place from the beginning, and scripture says That our savior is the 2nd Adam and so the first Adam was condemned in his mind the moment he partook of the fruit and so our savior in fulfillment has to say those words, just as he healed the man with leprosy it was in fulfillment of our creator healing Moses hand as it became leporus, he also commanded the water raging to be still just as he did back with Joshua when he said to the moon Peace be still thou moon. And so many more things fulfilled but I just wanted to give some light to the subject 😊 let all praise Yahshua

Every Passover the Jews would put a tag, like we put on the collar of our pets around the neck of the lamb that was to be sacrificed so that when it was sacrificed it would be identified by the head of the house who had brought it to the priests to be sacrificed , then taken home and prepared for the Passover meal . the sign beside the stake of Christ would have in the 1st letters of the Hebrew words describing Jesus would have spelled out vertically : YHVH , the sign beside the stake was YHVH's way of identifying ownership of His 'Passover Lamb'. The Romans had varing methods of crucifixion, the original texts in Hebrew state Jesus was crucified on a 'stake , would mean that His feet were nailed to the left and right side of that pole , His hands crossed one on top of the other above His head then nailed with one nail through both of His wrists . Israel doesn't have a lot of of trees , and it didn't in Jesus's time either ; the Romans were all about about economics and recycling material; so a simple vertical execution 'stake' was lot more economical and practical to execute criminals on than the Roman Catholic version of a 'cross ' with a vertical post with a cross beam .

A X shaped frame was commonly used as well. The Romans had portable ones for use on punitive raids. If a fixed place of execution was used a pole with a detachable cross beam was more likely. The Cross beam would be roped into place before the pole was raised into the socket in the ground.

It has always only been speculated upon as to exactly how a body was precisely secured to an upright. The wooden cross is perhaps the most popular of frames for executing the deed, but in that lumber itself was not as plentiful as some illustrations would have us believe, I am encouraged to therefore believe that next to the classic wooden T-frame, - appropriate trees were I'm sure utilized plus frames as well as places were I'm sure used and then reused. Notice the small pieces of wood that were used in passing the nails through each of the hands and feet. Were this not done, the nails would tear through the wounds and the body could not remain aloft. I always thought crucifixion to be an especially painful, long drawn-out, and very degrading way to go. When I am complaining or feeling sorry for myself, when I am exhausted or in pain and denouncing my treatment or the world around me, - I think to myself: "How does my pain or my own spartan life compare with what Christ endured and went through for ME" ? Right away - I don't feel so badly.

@@triciamyers4126 it's 2 nails. 1 driven through the upper foot, and 1 driven from the ankle into the heel of the other foot. The one through the heel was driven in first to take the weight. The second overlapped the first, and there was no pedestal. So says the forensics evidence. The angle of the blood flow on the back aligns with a horizontal T-bar set beneath the sign the Jews complained about, which read YHWH. The nails driven into the hands activated the median nerve causing both thumbs to turn inward. The blood type was AB, and genetically contains 24 chromosomes. 23 from the female side and 1 from the male side autosomal count, proving the corpse had no biological father - or there would have been 23 from the male side. Raising an interesting question. Who in history was born of a woman only with no male present? Sadly, the forensics have been known since the 1990s. Whoever controls the news controls the narrative. They didn’t overlap the feet and drive a nail through both of them that wouldn’t even make sense. What makes more sense is the tree theory that they nailed each ankle to the base of it on each side of the tree. To support the weight you would need to use the wrists not the palms as they might slip off and fall. If you watch Stigmata they show the woman with the wounds through the wrists and ankles not the palms and feet. If you were to nail through the palms one could actually rip their own hand off the nail but the wrist makes it much harder to do so. I’m sure the only thing we’ve gotten wrong is that it wasn’t actual crosses people were nailed to as who would take the time to built a cross when a tree or stake is much easier and that’s why they had to nail the ankles to the sides not overlap them that is silly. Cuz naturally the legs would hang on either side and be easier to nail than to overlap them together and drive one nail through both feet the nail isn’t long enough to pierce both feet and the tree or stake. Ask Jesus and he shall reveal this truth to you 🙏🏻

Except it's not exactly accurate. The word cross was never used in the Bible and didn't come until a few centuries later. The proper terminology is a torture stake or in some cases even a tree a single pole. Traditionally the stake was driven through both of the wrists above the head which would have induced suffocation much quicker than having the hands actually out to the side. Regardless, we are not to have anything to do with idolatry which is what most of Christendom is doing when they venerate the cross imagery.

There is a great video on youtube I watched once that had nothing to do with this or religion. But the old style of a blacksmiths making those nails allowed them to dig better into the wood and less likely to slip or pull out because they were kind of wedged in unlike the round manufactured nails we use today. They actually break the wood in a very particular way without splitting it like can happen with round nails.

@super duper ducky Another account of Jesus appears in Annals of Imperial Rome, a first-century history of the Roman Empire written around 116 A.D. by the Roman senator and historian Tacitus. In chronicling the burning of Rome in 64 A.D., Tacitus mentions that Emperor Nero falsely blamed “the persons commonly called Christians, who were hated for their enormities. Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius.” ........Might want to consider what else you might be wrong about.

Still a question in my mind considering I have heard that the Greek word for hands can mean anything from hand to lower arm, and given the high potential of broken bones as in the hand of the victim here, but it is said of Jesus… “not a bone shall be. Broken” leaves doubt as to the placement of the nails in his hands. Regarding the lower mail or nails I think that is likely. Good for thought?

I am a nurse. This topic is one that has intrigued me for years and I have researched it but am not an expert on crucifixions. However, I might be able to help explain how crucifixions were possible and also perfected for the sole intention of inflicting the most pain and prolonging the most suffering. Actually the word “excruciating “ stems from the meaning “out of the cross” to describe this type of pain. When I found that out I honestly stopped using that term to describe my own chronic pain because it’s nothing compared to what Christ and so many others suffered on the cross. Anyways take your your left hand and trace the back of your right middle finger all the way to your wrist. Once a nail is driven into that spot it allows the person the ability to pull up on the nail to be able to expand their chest enough to breathe. If the nail is done in the center of the hand it will rip through and be unable to hold the weight of the person. The bones locking around the nail hammered into the wood of the cross allow the person to be held there. The second reason to do this at that site is that there are several nerves and tendons that run through there which when penetrated will cause searing pain throughout the hand and up the arm to the neck. Many paintings depict the forearms roped to the horizontal beam as well which gives added support to the body weight. Over time the only way the person can breathe is to pull up on the wrist and push down on the ankle joints nailed in. Someone can last many hours this way vs just a couple if done another way. Again maximum pain infliction and prolonged suffering was the goal of Roman execution not only for the psyche of their enemies but for the person on the cross. There is a similar area in the ankle joint as well that allows for this to happen if they didn’t provide a wedge under the feet for the person to push against so they can breathe. Sometimes they added a wedge to prolong suffering further. It’s been said that Jesus lasted about 9hours on the cross and I believe that’s entirely possible if He was nailed in this manner. I hope this makes sense and helps you understand the price He paid for us.

So if they did that it would separate the bones and lock them in rather than break them. I do believe some bones were broken in other crucifixions if they didn’t use the method I described.

@@mlindner4498 Let's say for the sake of argument that what you are saying has truly happened to the Lord's body when he was crucified, still that will not change the gospel message that he was resurrected. The bones, the blood, the flesh were just parts of his body, and we know according to the scriptures that when God gives life to the dead body, nothing of the body's previous state was retained and carried to the new state when God's power bring it back to life. Lazarus body which was in the grave for four days was certainly in the decomposition state. I believe that his body was given a new profile and didn't retain the previous condition before he died. The same was happened to the Lord's body. The lashes and the swellings were gone, and the bones, if it was true that some were broken according to your explanation, were restored when it was given a new form by the power of the Spirit. I believe that in eternity future, the only imperfect glorified body, when all things are renewed by God, is the Lord's body. I believe that he will still be bearing the wound scars on his hands and feet as a testimony of his love and sacrifice for all the people that he saved.

It wasn’t just the physical torture of crucifixion, as many people had experienced, but as it’s written in Isaiah “that it pleased God to bruise Him, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we were healed.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” This unfathomable torture of Jesus is something we tend to forget and so uncomprehending we will never understand the depths of such an agony. Excuse me, but those nails through the hand appeared to be so short and so small as to be incapable of supporting the body weight. When the person slumped, the nails would let go and the person would fall flat on his face unless one of the soldiers caught him! But crucifixion normally entailed something else called a sedile/cornu/palus/acuta-crux that also served to crucify the person nailed to a tee or a cross in a by-the-book crucifixion. Seneca describes it in Moral Epistles 101.10-14 and he said that such a crucifixion fixed the crucified person not just by nailing but also by penetration. One more thing: Romans didn't bother with such niceties such as allowing the crucified person the dignity of a skirt or even a loincloth. They crucified people completely naked. A by-the-book crucifixion would then subject the crucified person to the maximum shame possible.

With the ankle bone there was a piece of wood between the nail head and the ankle to prevent it from tearing out. This same tactic was probably used for the hands as well. Also, many believe that the victim was both nailed and tied to the cross.

The Greek word used in the New Testament for "hands" (as in "the holes in his hands") was used to describe the whole forearm, wrist, and hand. However, we can be sure the Romans nailed through the wrist AND through the hands, depending on their mood and the status of the criminal, because Romans didn't always do things "by the book." They were sometimes pointlessly cruel and vindictive and even stupid, depending on the particular Roman. They also didn't care if the hands tore apart, because the feet were still nailed, and the hands were lashed to the crossbeam by rope or hide strips. Skeletal evidence of *either* form of crucifixion is so vanishingly rare that I know of only a single heel bone with a Roman nail in it. Besides that, the unusual garments and plant specimens identified in the Shroud of Turin, along with the radioactive means by which the body's impressions were made (as flash frames that can be stitched back together into an animation showing one wrist re-socket itself, and showing the body suddenly rose upright with its feet dangling), all prove together that it was far beyond the means for 14th century Europeans to fake. It was the same Shroud once stolen from the capital city of Byzantium... And it was definitely the same shroud that wrapped Christ's body. The first modern tests on the shroud were severely compromised in methodology and bias, unfortunately, which robbed countless believers of hope in the Shroud's veracity. There are some lengthy presentations on KZbin about this subject, but like most truthful things, KZbin blocks and deletes my comments linking to those videos (meanwhile, pro-narrative studies and Amazon links are fine, but .gov Supreme Court PDFs and anti-narrative peer-reviewed studies get my comments stricken... I have video evidence of this on my channel). The Shroud videos I'm talking about are still up. I'll let you see for yourself where the nails were placed. @@WisdomThumbs KZbin has so many particular censorship tactics that it is astounding how much intentional work they must put into their efforts. Often times, when testifying in comments, and switching iPhone apps to reference an internet page, upon returning to the KZbin app, my in-progress comment will have been deleted. This only happens when writing about Jesus or on Christian videos. Even published comments disappear instantly when referencing Jesus and God, or when pointing out evil workings. Not every single time, but very commonly. They may also shadow-ban a comment so that it gets no interaction. I also see the KZbin app crash specifically when I’m writing a comment reply under a Christian video. Sometimes the amount of time and effort I put into a comment, when instantly stolen from me, does become pacifying. Their tactics are effective at reducing people’s exposure to the Word of God online. All we can do is fight back harder and be strengthened in our resolve. Do not let their evil tactics be discouraging or successful. I’ve resorted to often writing long comments outside of KZbin and only pasting them into the comment window when ready to publish, to avoid KZbin deleting my progress. As for published comments being banned, the most you can do is try posting variations of the same message hoping that one gets through and is seen by its intended recipient. God bless you.

In actual fact, the bible is riddled with historical inaccuracies and contradictions. Many of the stories of miracles etc. in the bible can also be found in other religious texts attributed to other prophets but time lines can differ by centuries. It seems that stories of people rising from the grave, floating up into the sky etc. have had a broad appeal to many people since well before the dark ages and indeed persist even today. Better education is improving things to a large degree except in places like America where critical thinking seems to be in decline. Witness the horror of Trumpism.
