Of course it is difficult to translate a mythical creature such as that but fact is fact as far as Biblical closed old testament covenant canon. Like anything dealing with scripture or any religious volumes it is many times personal interpretation as you see it and is quite relative. Its ultimately really up to the reader. I feel like these encounters would have been more a combination of spiritual and metaphorical on top of just the physical. Physical evidence is important, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Keep in mind we are observers through a looking glass at something that happened thousands of years ago and was recorded by man. Even a minor change in presentation or translation can completely change the meaning of an event. I take it with a grain of salt lol

I wish I could add a picture of the thing my husband caught when we was fishing. When it came out the water the first thing I thought if was what the Bible said about the snake will crawl on his belly. It looked like a snake with legs. Except for the fact that the Bible does not say Jonah was swallowed by a whale; whales, I don't believe, are mentioned anywhere in the Bible. Jonah 1:17 says "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights." So Jonah was swallowed by a large fish, not a whale. Furthermore, a whale is a mammal, not a fish.

However, if an all-powerful Being (God) can create the universe, the earth and all the plants and animals, He certainly would have the power to protect Jonah from stomach acids, lack of oxygen, etc., etc. And why would you believe it is a myth? I always figured that The Behemoth an The Cockitrice, Dragon, Leviathan were all dinosaurs. Job chapter 40:15 & Job chapter 41 both describe animal's that appear to be Reptilian in Nature. The Behemoth had a tail like a Cedar Tree no elephant, no hippo's, or Rhino's for that matter don't have tails like a Cedar Tree. Crocodiles are meat eater's an they do have powerful tails that could be Cedar Tree tails however, The Behemoth's feast on trees an shrubs an fruit too. The Leviathan is described as an Marine animal that is feared by sailor's where net's couldn't even hold the prisoner animal affectively. That could be The Crocodile but, Old King James from around 1611 to 1884 teaches through The Prophet Isaiah that God makes a distinction between the Crocodiles & The Leviathan. The Behemoth too me are The Sauropod dinosaurs in The Fossil Record (God declares that He an He alone can approach a Behemoth without a sword.) Somehow I don't believe they were the friendly veggie dinosaurs we believed them to be. The Cockitrice is quite prevalent in Isaiah an Jeremiah but, in Isaiah The Prophet gives the reader a glimpse of what Heaven will be like for God's Children. The Prophet says that a child will be able to play by the den of a Cockitrice an not be harmed. It just so happens that Cockitrice in Hebrew means Spiked Horned-Viper so I speculate that is a reference too Ankylosaurs, Certopsians, an Stegosaurs veggie eaters yes? We're they friendly? No! Lastly dragon's which is universal as universal as Giant's & Monster's. The Dragons are meat eaters that would make them Therapods Giganotosaur's & T.Rex in fact before the Old K.James Bible was changed in 1885, Malachi ch.3:9 once said Like a Dragon that swallowth Up a Man an then something about Owls today, Malachi makes veiled reference too Serpent's an ostriches. If anyone considers the term Like a Dragon that Swallowth Up a Man think of Jurassic Park Bloodsucking Lawyer Gennero sitting on the toilet what did the T.Rex do to Him?

While rational solutions to these creatures such as crocs and elephants described in exaggerated ways are possible, why not simply view them as monsters. Israel feared the sea and could probably well imagine some horrible monsters lived far away. They would not encounter them. Dinosaurs?? I doubt it. But interestingly enough, science today confirms that giant lizards lived 50,000 years ago in Australia, so there might be some room for dreams lol.

Has anyone seen The Smithsonian Documentary about The Discovery of Titanoboa in Columbia? That is how I envisioned the serpent in Genesis an Jubilees I mean Titanoboa grew too 45 feet in length. A diver in southern cali pacific ocean was lobster fishing at the bottom of the shallow part. He didnt tealize a hump back whale swallowed him by accident. Spewed him out cause the whale didnt like the taste or texture. When diver was in the mouth of the whale he felt pain pressure in his legs his oxegen mouth piece fell out couldnt see cause it was so dark. But felt for it. Jonah talked about being in sheol. It appears that he drowned. The whale scooped up his dead body likely to protect it until he was returned to it. There are different parts to hell or the "belly of the fish". Lake of fire and outer darkness are 2 of them. You also have the pit or abyss. The belly of the whale (stomach) has I believe 4 different chambers to it. It's never wise to tell God no.

I think in Christainity it was included as a middle age myth but based on the deity Dagon from Ancient times. Dagon or Dagan is an ancient Mesopotamian and ancient Canaanite deity so there are many depictions of him across the near east. Perhaps an allegory for the pre exile Henotheism in Judaism and its change to monotheism.

Leviathan and the behemoth just may be the crocodile and hippocampus respectively. The leviathan is said to breathe fire, so it’s breath is hot. Well, personally I’ve never seen a real crocodile but perhaps the writers of the scriptures were unfamiliar with them too but were doing their best to describe the low toned vibrations that are emitted from the body of the creature. When observing from a distance, the water surrounding the animal resonates and appears to boil on torso of the crocodile. This observable phenomenon could be what adds to the legendary fire breathing leviathan.
