Good info. When are needle palms considered established? I have both needle palms and Sabal minors: McCurtain strain, brazoria, emerald island giant, etc. Sabal minor- “gotta grow them all!” and while I also have Trachycarpus, I don’t think I’m at the point where I want to have them as anything except container plants at this point.

Needles are subject to spear rot much more when small. They need to be about 3 foot tall and in the ground a couple years to be pretty hardy down to the 0F point or below. I would recommend copper fungicide spear treatments on them in spring when temps go over 60F in their spear area preventatively every couple weeks from March-April for you. Cover ideally when small at temps under 21F to avoid rot for a couple years.

I would throw in that if folks are wanting to avoid shark tooth type thorns on the petioles, you want a Windmill, the Trachycarpus Fortunei. I’m so done with the “bloodletting” I got from the Mexican and European Fans I had.
