Thanks for corroborating what I always believed about the flowerstalk coming from the ground level on S.minor. I have posed this as a possible identification trait with many people and never had anyone confirm it. I have never seen a S. palmetto flower with less than a couple feet of trunk, and even then the stalk emerged from the trunk , not the ground level. I have actually grown a couple of S. minor var. Louisiana that did develop very short (2.5’) trunks, and did display somewhat costapalmate leaves. I am not familiar with how science says this variant came to be, but other than the squatty trunk and semi-costapalmate frond structure , it was a definite minor, with an overall height of 10’ and dark green/ bluish leaves 6-7’ across ( 25 y.o.)
@tntropics10 күн бұрын
Yes definitely if you see a flower stalk coming out of the ground I don't think it could be a S. palmetto. Thanks for the info on the Louisiana

@ Thank you. I got around 2 degree celcius higher temp around 3 feet from the house, than I got 10 feet from the house. If I plant closer, say 2 feet. Other than the looks, will it be a problem if the fronds touch the wall? I see alot of videos where it looks like the palms are planted around 2 feet from the house. The overhang is 1,5 feet so it will clear. Or would you go 3 feet and give some space for the fronds?
@tntropics18 күн бұрын
@@peterjuulsgaard They could make a noise inside house during wind and will get beat up a bit. Once it reaches overhang you'll have to bend fronds manually from over to under overhang as they droop or cut fronds strategically. My rocket palm is planted close to house and hitting overhang if you have seen it in my vids. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5-TgGOqm6h-pdU kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4LccpepbKuFnMU

Good one! New sub here🎉 I live in Denmark Scandinavia zone 6B maybe 7A. And I got several Fortunei’s I want to plant out this coming spring. They have approx 3 feet trunk and scales around 4,5 feet in all. I want to plant on the south side of the house, close to the wall. I’m wondering: would it be a good idea to give the palm an angle, so the roots are even closer to the house, but it will stear it self better around the hang-out (overhang) when that time comes? Or will it simply straighten it self again? Or is it better just to plant straight up?
@tntropics20 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! If planted at a angle the palm will resume vertical growth going forward making a bend or curve. You probably need to plant the palm so the trunk portion will clear the overhang and at least 1.2 meters from wall if you want fronds not to touch wall. Here are also temps I rec to protect at. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIaWkqCtnqxoi5o Here is my full Windmill guide kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYCymZqjjNOkiKM

You can rent a small scissor lift for a very reasonable price, especially if you only need it for an hour or two-it’ll get the job done, trust me. If you explain what you're using it for, they might even find it amusing and offer you a bigger discount. Better yet, if you tag them in your content, they might feature your reel on their social media too! full day is 150 on average in Tennessee and I am sure you can get a half day rate.

How cold tolerant are majesty palms? I’m in Mississippi in zone 8b, I got one this past summer and planted it in ground (because the majority of palms aren’t houseplants) and I currently have it wrapped, it seemed to be taking the cold pretty well, but I went ahead and wrapped it up, just to be safe
