Gable End Studwork
For my 76mm and 102mm hinge jigs

In this episode of the Big Build we are forming the structural Gable studwork walls.
We are using a Studwork gable wall to support the new Lattice ridge boards that support the main roof structure
We are using 200 x 50 timbers to form the studwork as this will be super strong and allow for a good amount of insulation and a service void

I love roof carpentry in the UK. Its my favourite part of the job. Working in Germany is so different and boring with most roofs cut on a cnc and you are just screwing it together. Even green oak framing is cut on the cnc. The skill is in the CAD design and programming.

From a bricklayer this is fascinating to watch. We have normally been slung off the job by this stage. I have the same Leica tape, other bricklayers are so un-trusting of it until I prove how accurate it is. I also have a Leica laser which you would think is a must for a bricklayer but many don't want to change with the times.

This video came at the perfect time. I'm about to stud my first gable wall and couldn't find any videos on setting out and measuring studs on HIGH walls like the one I'm working on. This did the job a treat - such quality explanation as always. Thank you. Would be cool to know the best way to get accurate measurements without the laser, using a normal tape though.

Excellent craftsmanship there mate, superb job. When using 110v tools keep the transformer inside and use 110v extensions. The idea of the 110v system is to keep the mains voltage off the site/work area,by using a 240v extension and putting the tranny outside you are defeating the purpose of it. The 110v is centre tapped so is only 55v to earth, much safer than 240. All the best.

I love the use of the laser plumb line and Leica, and the accuracy you acheived with the stud work. Impressive! I also like that you took the time to measure the actual gap that each stud had to fill rather than taking the shortcut of deducting 600mm to get each successive stud length. Fantastic work.

I use a Construction Master calculator to figure gable stud lengths. It works well if the plate is level, and the rafter is fairly straight. I'd guess they can work with metric as well as imperial. I mostly use it for stairs though.

Nice to see big timbers. I put my roof on the other day. 7.5 M wide x 13 M long double hipper. All trussed out of usual match wood. All up in a day with three of us. 7.5M wide tiny by Aussie standards. I think 17.5M about the biggest domestic span I have done. No interior load bearing walls they fully span. Now I can't get roofers because they can't get scaffolding. A lot done here with basically strap on hanging scaffold. Very envious of the tube and fit behind you. Never seen it in Qld. And now experiencing one of the wettest November's in history. Everything soaked. Isn't building grand.

I had a bit of a chuckle too - the typical 1900s Austrian city house is around 11 m deep, usually with the stairs jutting out the back somewhere. Width varies obviously but it's typically a multiple of about 4.5 m as the standard room was usually some variation of 4 m wide by 5 m deep, give or take 50 cm. There's always a load-bearing centre wall but that has a whole load of chimneys built into it, one flue for the front and back rooms on each floor. The roofs are usually works of art, intricate structures framed with massive beams, sometimes including turrets and other fancy details. Of course nowadays all that gets modified and hidden behind plasterboard as lofts get converted left and right.

Not sure the Lieca is actually anymore a luxury than a laser level is today. If you are working alone it is speedy and an easy ROI with or without the apps that go with it. How many boards do you have to cut too short for the Leica to pay for itself? I have used the handheld disto for almost 20 years - amazing tools! The Leica Apps really add value and speed
@gregorymacneil2836
@gregorymacneil2836 2 жыл бұрын
I should add - that I have studied measurement and productivity. Unless accessibility is an issue it is usually faster to use a good Stanley tape on anything less than 10 feet that can be “Hocked”with the tape end. To match the speed of the Leica on longer distances you need three people - two to manage the tape and one to “book” the measurements. So the ROI on the Leica is really amazing

When you cut the longest studs, you 'sighted' along each one to put them round a particular way.. If it had been a rafter, obviously the bow would be upwards, but unsure on a vertical wall which way round you would put them, or do they alternate? Fantastic work as always.

@@ukconstruction Yes I did watch. Excellent video as always. Always enjoy your channel!! You used a laser level. I was referring to a Bosh Blase Laser measurer. I use it so I do not have to get on a ladder to measure the height. Just place the base of the laser on the sill plate and point it to your ceiling joist at the high point of the cut. Accurate to within 1/16 of an inch (think it's 1.57mm).
