The Big Build 28. Dormer Construction supporting rafters and trimmers

In this episode we are forming the Structural Dormer roof trimming
I am taking Ed through the structural dormer roof trimming and we do this by cutting all the rafters from a simple template rafter and using this to set everything out, its much quicker and more accurate this way

Credit to you David all carpenters should know how to make a saw horse, but the sad fact is depending on who they get working for, they might just want there work completed especially if there unlucky enough to be working with agencies that contracts them out. Far to common nowadays.

Dormer window kit I used to call them. Work out one and keep patterns of everything to build the rest. You should build an eyebrow dormer to show how that is done. Then show the tiling of it with all the guage changes to create the curve. Balcony dormer with lead dressed deck frontage. Or a Cupola with a weathervane. So many interesting things you can do with a roof. Or you can put up trusses and get bored.

Big ups for a bang up job, these gentlemen show how it's done with timeless craft at its finest. I can't think of a better and more satisfying way to get a complex structure right than working with this kind of templates and jigs. In my mind I call them the master parts - reference parts and mockups with the right proportions and angles that everything else gets measured by. Also well done one the staged nailing - first get everything set up right with some minimal placeholders, and then fixate it all together. Now my hands itch to get to building stuff.
