Just a thought, but Coraline is a very healthy child. She isn’t afraid to express her dissatisfaction with her situation and her feelings of disappointment with her parents. I notice there’s a photo of her with her parents where she has brown hair but in the movie she has her hair dyed blue. It hints to the audience that her parents love her very much and want her to express herself (which she does- success!). Her mom and dad never say “stop complaining” or make her feel bad for being upset. For Coraline, I believe that the split happens when she moves. Moving is a jarring experience and where she has moved is a big disappointment and she has no friends. Of course she’d wish the house was full of magic. Full of interesting people. And what’s worse is the people who she seeks for comfort are too busy to do so. So she makes that up too! Parents who have nothing but time for her. I love Coraline because she has good parents but any child in a hard situation can wish for things that they don’t actually want! “Be careful what you wish for” moment.

Im one of few people this movie DIDN'T traumatize and thats only bc I was abused and thought the other mother seemed like a savior as a child. My favorite book was also The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman which basically tells a similar story of a boy with no family named Nobody trying to find his place in a world where he isnt wanted. Im now 25 and still love the movie, know it word for word, can literally put on a one person play of the movie without stumbling once because ive watched it so many times to make myself happy as a pre-teen on up until now. I hope, if i ever have children, they never find comfort in the movies I did as a child because that will mean that I have failed them as a parent.

It’s my favorite movie. My comfort movie. My mom is definitely the other mother, I’m 25 diagnosed with BPD. My family will emotionally abuse me , then lure me with money or gifts. Having no sense of self or true identity at 25 is truly horrifying.

My God daughter put me onto, Coraline. We watched the film, together, last month...she ended up falling asleep half way through but I was so intrigued that I ended up finishing the movie, myself. My favorite part was when she stopped being raggedy to the feral cat who was trying to look out for + protect her + ultimately saved her from the mother with the button eyes. Finally, she takes him in + gives him a home...the development of their relationship + the emotional support he provided for her was so relatable to both the child + adult versions of myself 🐈⬛❤️🐾👩🏻

My favourite film and book as a youngster, though I'd be lying if I claimed that it didn't traumatise me.

I was kinda shocked at people's 'neglect' and 'abuse' claims towards the parents. It made me question them more than the parents, like 'While we're making strong accusations, are you so smothered and spoiled?'. As grown as some of the naysayers were, why can't they tell 'busy' from 'neglectful'? And to the point of using the term 'abusive'? Come on now. All Coraline had to do was wait, aside from the fantastical element, she wasn't at risk by her parents or neighbors. She just had to wait, that's all.

They weren't able to realize that the film is portrayed through Coraline's perspective, and children's perspectives are warped to their own viewpoints and usually none others (adults frequently are, too, to some level). Her parents are just stressed and overworked, and she's being very over-dramatic about the fact that they don't have time to entertain her every second of the day. Her dad could use a good cookbook, though.

Just finished the video (I had it on in the background while doing some fairly mindless work, and it was perfect, so much food for thought!) and commenting so hopefully KZbin boosts it out to more people. I’d also like to say that The Graveyard Book, another of Gaiman’s books, has for a long time held a very special place in my heart so I too felt complicated emotions when I recently found out about the allegations. It upset me an awful lot, so you’re not alone in that, and I absolutely understand your decision not to make any more Coraline videos as a result. Still, hearing someone else express similar feelings gave me a degree of closure on it all, so thank you for that ❤

I love Coraline, it's a wonderful story and I think it has a life of its own beyond the author. The movie especially as you said had many wonderful people that worked on it. There are aspects of the story, the visuals, that he did not have a hand in. And the collaborative effort of fans and film analysts had also grown the story beyond the original book. I really looked up to Neil Gaiman as a storyteller. He's the one famous person that has allegations against him that really surprised and deeply disappointed me. I can't go back and un-buy movie tickets or my dvd. But I can choose who to support with my money going forward. I really just hope his (alleged) victims find peace.

I love what you said about over analyzing with this movie and film theories and such. I’ve loved watching other people’s theories of the movie but have felt the same as you that they are losing the point. Personally I definitely do not believe the theory she’s still trapped I think that theory kinda defeats the purpose of the movie.
