Seriously! I admire Vandana Shiva, she's very insightful and the only reason I know of her is because of my uni materials.. :-) She's correct in saying "the reality is people are pushed into poverty.. The original state of human beings is not poverty" Right on! Good debate.

One of the best hosted debates I've ever seen, on any topic. Zeinab Badawi keeps it moving, and the partcipants are pointed and collaborative within their differences. Conflicting viewpoints deftly handled into a robust debate about the causes of global poverty. And the predictable but fun 'pin the tail on the donkey' game in these West vs the world debates never ceases to bedazzle.

This is the part that really frustrates me, that in all of these debates, wherever they are held, whether in a public forum such as this or among individuals in private, always seem to center around the GOVT and whatever they think _their_ role ought to be in "eliminating poverty." And it's that entire premise, often supported from those on _ALL_ sides of the debate, which is where we get into trouble, -- that the solution somehow lies with, or every really _can_ come from, govt, other than by means of simply _getting them out of the way_ of true progress. Literally everything the govt (take your pick) does to try and "help" economic situations/conditions only serves to do more _harm_ than good, and it's policies more often than not actually result int he exact _opposite_ of their intended aims.

(1) Trust in ones self...ability to produce and innovate (2) Trust in others....to work as a team (3) Trust in a belief system...to help stabilize the metaphysics of existence (4) Trust in traditional principles and precepts.....or laws of the land if you like (5) Trust in forces beyond self...same as (3 above)

what is it that enable individuals to open new businesses in a country ? of course money and working conditions is important, but what really encourages one individual to open a business and do something for the community !? it is the master of a craft. Or the understanding of a subject or profession, learning something is the foremost important step ones need to take in order to feel empowered to do something for himself and others.

What he's really saying, ultimately, is that we need MORE entrepreneurial competition, and MORE businesses being able to be created. Also, I'd like to hear just what his own recommendation for such a "job strategy" would be.

People are obsessed with blaming colonialism for every damn thing... Yes they took a lot of our fortune but did they teach us to be corrupt... Did they teach us to be stupid to invest more in making weapons than on food.yes India has a different scenario coz it's surrounded by enemies but what logic gives the government not to invest more in people's welfare... If the world united... It would have the option of treating environmental strategy (peace corps, the whole humanitarian right to self-determination, feminism, communes and loving human comforts, saturation of the natural control of all the living blessings/friends everywhere, etc.) as less selfishly based than the optimistic/ambitious business school gurus, of the nineties, whose success, while great, need not be a one party party forever. Relate to what's around you; each other, equals, when it's time to clean up. DON'T despair and commit suicide at how cold the world really is; God loves YOU and is always helping.

I don't like this host, she is so bias supporting big oil companies. I thought the first woman(introducing this show) was going to be the host, she is so much more equal and shows less bias. This woman cuts people off very rudely, telling them "it's enough, we get it". So rude.

why Tony Blair is part of this debate? people from emerging countries are better qualified to debate this issue EXCLUDING the British nor any representatives from the developed world. I don't think developed world leadership have any interest whatsoever to be at same level economically as emerging markets. Think about it, America make noise daily about China catching-up on them, if developed countries wake up one day and find themselves competing head-to-head with today's emerging countries, they will not accept that...

The problem is that people don't realize how such international competition is actually _good_ for EVERYONE. Any Americans who bemoan China's recent and growing economic success are obviously too ignorant to realize how _both_ countries have benefited from the success of one another. I don't know where people get this "us or them" mentality, that in order for one group to prosper others have to be brought or kept down. Not true, but quite the opposite, actually.
