It made me sad when you brought the large collector back up to grade when it already had an existing tunnel. Would have been a perfect place for pedestrian facilities and local roads instead. The new collector seems like a huge swing and a miss. To elaborate, the "Verde Beach Government" neighborhood feels just as disconnected from the community as before. The large collector roads would make for an intimidating walk and that is a shame for the government center area... it should be equally accessible for people of all modes of transit. Love the video itself, as you can see I am probably way too mentally invested, but I think that means you are making great videos.

@andrewslejska42052 жыл бұрын
I need to go back over the new road layout you added later but id consider some road diets and car connection decreases while allowing delivery using policies to improve greenspace while keeping traffic down. Those arterials look underutilized for their size. Just because there is space doesnt mean they need to be filled with roads. Also removing the arterial loop around the government district could give you space for that freight terminal seeing as it should be a collector if anything. I dont think there was bad traffic there to begin with. But im just a standard youtube commentor. This place is awesome. The road speeds should be tweaked to direct traffic flow, the larger roads need a higher speed and some of the smaller ones might need a decrease to make the larger roads more attractive to the simulation. Whereas trains are inherently bound to their tracks, such that any backups mean being stuck until things clear up ahead. So when railway and metro connections are made to enhance streamlined flow, I'm a very happy viewer!! ☺👍 _(This may or may not have to do with having had to spend hours stuck in a train underground due to backups of one kind or another on a number of occasions in NYC)._ 😅

Paris did sort of this in the 13th district over 20 years ago, the project is still ongoing but nearing completion. The goal was to cover the Austerlitz station access tracks to turn the over track space into a whole new neighbourood to link the West and East parts of the district and remove the barrier that the tracks formed. What helped is that old industries on the river side closed and freed the land for other uses. Unfortunately, the terrain didn't favor tunneling, they had to cover the tracks with bridges for streets and squares of concrete platform to fill the blocks. They did it block by block but it paid of. This added the Avenue de France into the city road network and links the formerly cut from each other parts with new connectivity. They did it just after bulding the line 14 metro line (with big pillars and a big vault to sustain the charge of the future structures hence why Bibliothèque François Mitterand station is so big and added a connection to RER C by displacing the former Bvd Maséna station to BFM) I've been following the project for a while and they did a great job although, architecturaly speaking, the new buildings are sometimes quite bad but that's another thing. More recently on the other side of the City, North West in the 17th District, they did rather the same thing near Pont Cardinet rail station, added line 14 extension, build a park over it and added a new Neighbourhood along the rail tracks (not covering them this time, since it very expansive) but still added bridges to link that part to the old South side of the rail network for better connexions. The metro arrived sligthly delayed due to technical issues buteverything runs fine now. You were lucky terrain was on your side because the game doesn't come with an easy solutiuon to add constructible space over train tracks artificially.

I recently stumbled across the trick of burying train tracks and especially highways. They make zero noise pollution when they are underground, and you free up so much space. Not to mention that you no longer have to look at those ugly spaghetti junctions. It can be a total subterranean crows-nest , but you can't see it, so you don't have to compromise functionality for appearance. I put a big loop under my farm so that trucks can nip down a tunnel entrance and pop up right where they need to be. It's a game changer!

Since office can front a collector, please consider mulliganing the collector by the Government District to be at the frontage road, or convert the frontage road into a one-way street and build a parallel facility to make a boulevard. That's likely what would happen anyway, restripe the local and add another two lanes. Also, you can build a connector couplet up to the freeway to deal with the new freight desire path.
@GalaxyFalcon12 жыл бұрын
You should replace all of the 4 lane roads that have a concrete median with the ones that have grass or trees in the middle. It has zero drawbacks (it only removes parking when its on the side, the 4 lane roads have it in the middle) and increases land value and decreases noise pollution. Also makes it pretty. Besides, that, love the episode!

That was very satisfying to watch. Burying rail in cities absolutely makes sense, particularly in a super dense location like this. Check out Kings Cross/St Pancras Station in London to see something very similar to what you did here - also worth noting that the brownfield around the lines which was mostly industrial is now a combination of high value apartments, office, restaurants and bars (including Google's European HQ) when it used to be a bit run down (and an unofficial red light district). Might be an idea for some of the areas fronting the old rail corridors that aren't collectors now.

It's amazing to watch you work your magic with the vanilla mechanics.
@jason25012 жыл бұрын
Its fine to have 2 lines coming into one track at the station because each track has a platform on the left and the right of it. So as long as the stops of the lines are on different sides i.e. platforms there won't be an issue within the station. You can see this at 32:23 with the pink and red lines (though its kind of hidden behind the district name)

I love these updates over a large urban highway. So much better and easier to navigate. Yes some of the large collectors are pedestrian Barriers but it’s nice to see continued sensible growth in the down town area. I do think that the collector connection behind the grand central terminal might be worth the price of the eminent domain on those two blocks because of the potential real estate that can be sold of for high rise development but I’m not super invested to see that happen. I do think expanding cargo facilities in the downtown might be necessary if we don’t see the collectors doing their jobs. Instead of using asymmetric roads could a series of one way couplets facilitate the same function that a 2U 4 lane road would? I’ve used them before in some of my cities with mixed success.

Hi city planner, I really love this series but I'm having some serious questions about this episode. Digging down the rail network was a great idea, however, by filling in the new space with large 4 lane roads in many places, you have made a new network that is almost as disruptive. if you pause around 49:50, you can really see how overbuilt the road network has become. Personally I would remove the lower 4 lane road and instead try to build out the government center grid into surrounding areas to improve connectivity. I would also connect the middle 4 lane road to the six lane road earlier since it runs parallel to the arterial for about 40% of its length. Doing this would save you a lot of space for zoning or a park. Also, I'd have a look at the train lines, they seem to be outcompeted by other forms of public transport and many seem redundant.

I got way behind. I'm currently watching your tutorial, just got passed the snow DLC of Tutoria. But this sounds fun. Can't wait to watch it tonight

Actually, in the Netherlands, there is a good example of highway being buried In Maastricht, they have buried the highway that went trough the city into 2 tunnels that are on top of each other. The first one is for thos who want to go into the city, so there exits at different place. The second one below, is for those who are juste going trough the city without stopping. On ground level, they've created green space to replace the highway :)

Not too sure how I feel about all the 'digging'. A great example of how a rail system goes from underground to above ground is the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) that connects Long island to NYC. Its above ground in long island and goes under once it reaches NYC to Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal. Also, I feel that the more logical thing to do for a big project like this was to make the railways elevated instead of underground, as well as creating elevated train stations. It would increase connectivity and I would think it wouldn't be as big of a project. The borough of Queens in NYC has a lot of elevated stations that dive underground as well. It was an interesting episode!

Not sure if someone else mentioned it but right now in Stuttgart there is a project to build new underground rail lines and replace the station with one that doesn't terminate

Love the buried lines. Bummed to see them turned into big roads!

I think it's fine to isolate Banana from the intercity rail line. It's a commuter branch serving central, so is fine to be off the main line. If it were me, I'd have maybe three stations on the main, regional, line with the major suburbs served by different lines fanning from there. The intercity three would be Central, airport, and your yet-to-build tourism center on the island. You could then use your last mile options (bus, metro, bike) to fan out from the terminals to make cross city links, rather than having everything pulled to central. Imo that would minimise congestion and would allow you to heavily rationalise your lines.

Quite an appropriate video considering London’s Crossrail has just opened

I like watching CPP videos because they simulate what a real city would develop over time. But then he just buries a whole train system under an undeveloped land, single home houses.

One way to alleviate the tunnel exit slope might be to make a sloped ditch and put the exit at the deeper end.

I’d have loved to see the land yielded from burying the trains used for non car purposes but sometimes you’ve got to play the game mechanics. A freight terminal would still likely be needed. You might also be able to alter some train lines as I think you’ve still got a few short lines pinging back and forth. Also I think the pink line still shares a platform instead of using both at one of the stops so that might need checking

When it comes to when I reclaim that land from the railways, I build residential and commercial as well as offices in their place

I started my city by building a rail line to high standards (Very few gradients, smooth curves and stuff like that) so that trains would be able to run at high speeds on it. Then placed a ground dual island platform train station and began to develop the areas around it. This way, I could be sure that the railway line would never have to cross roads at ground-level and not demolish any buildings.

I think a motorway flyover would be really cool, although I’m not sure about the feasibility of something like that in such a built up area!

I feel like he should do an episode where he looks at all of his districts to see if they still line up propperly, because i feel like he has changed some districts in such a way that they wont line up with his district zone thingies

10:57 you could use UI, node controller, slope. Those tunnels can be pain in the ass 😀✌

Id like to see a city you build but with the budget of an Arabic Prince. I seen a project about a city that would be called "the line" and it basically looked like an underground highway with the city both above and bellow. I've played some, making an underground highway did make room, and since the main road is right above, the ramps and exits are really small.

It's a shame that lovely green strip was urbanised with the feeder road. It could have made a lovely mini park area with great cycle and pedestrian access. Maybe even something like that disused subway line in Manhatten that was converted to path & mini park. Loving the videos none the less tho!
