The Big Fight: Are Indians racist?

Though we profess to believe in the mantra of universal brotherhood yet there is no denying of the fact that there is a deep-seated bias or prejudice against communities different from our own. Whether it's the taunt that people from North East hear in Delhi or police hostility towards Africans nationals living in India, these incidents leave a long scar in our collective morality and begs the question whether such incidents are mere anomalies or is there indeed a deep bias in us when it comes to “foreigners”? There are of course cases where certain foreigners are given "preferential treatment" based possibly on the colour of their skin. Do we suffer from a colonial hangover? Or can the problem be traced back to the Vedic 'varna system'? Is education the best way to rid our society of such prejudices? We debate on The Big Fight.

There are other countries in Africa where many Indians live that are doing well and are not facing restrictions or racism on a daily basis. Compare that to how Africans are treated in India. Some are being killed and are mistreated every day as is anyone who is black skinned. The justification some say on here is because Africans sell drugs. It seems like BS to me as if there weren't people to buy drugs then there wouldn't be anyone to sell it. The real reason for the racism against black people in India is the caste system and people in this thread deflecting need to be more honest about that.

I had an indian friend and he told me how back home (in India), people started discriminating against him because he was friend with africans students. Indians are not all racist. In every race and ethnicity, there is the bad and racist but there is also the good so it is unfair for you to generalize against Indians. If you can say that, I could say that to every race in the world. It doesn’t make sense to generalize. In fact, that could show that you (not your race but only you) are a racist. Are you forgetting that Gandhi was racist early in his career and not for his entire life? He grew up with these ideas that were common during his time. However, he realised this as a major fault and for the rest of his life, he fought discrimination of all kinds. There are a lot of people who shame others for being less than admirable, and even though those people may not have that negative quality, they certainly aren't honest about the prejudices they do harbour against people. Someone might not be racist, bigoted and homophobic, but they can certainly be rude to others for some arbitrary reason. I wouldn't call that person someone I admire. On the other hand, Gandhi transformed from being an ignorant person with a superiority complex to a person who dedicated his life to championing diversity and eradicating discrimination in all forms. Someone who can acknowledge their faults and use the knowledge they've gained to create change, is far more worthy of being respected than someone who champions good causes but harbours their own prejudices, and instead of making a sincere effort to change, they will make excuses for it. Mandela admired Gandhi. I seriously doubt that he would have if Gandhi had remained a racist.

As a South African that lives in Florida experiencing all types of Indians. I not only think that Indians are racist. The lighter-skinned Indians are racist to dark Southern Indians in India. I love this debate. Because me looking at most indians here in the US. From and african american perspective they are very racist. Most indians I have encountered in the US although dark as me and darker, some very ebony even. Seem to not want to do anything with black culture here. Besides coming into our neighborhoods when they are new immigrants and very poor. And come and build themselves economically in our communities. Then when they reach a wealthier economic status they immediately move to white suburbs. Most here that I have encountered want nothing to do with anything black. The darker ones seem to migrate towards anything white. Marrying white women and only associating with europeans. Even though they might live in african american and hispanic communities when they first migrate here. They socially shun anything dark or black its really disheartening to me. Some I speak to say this is because of the rampant classism and racism they were exposed to already in india before they came here for economic , and religious equality. But then adopt these same racist western policies and social stigmas here that african americans have to encounter on a daily bases.

Interestingly, even the debate about racism seems more racist than what it purports to fight. That African student from Nigeria has not given enough time to air his views. This, for me, is racism. What I should inform Indians who live in India is that such a tendency is even going on in Africa. Since Indians were brought by colonial monsters, have maintained exclusionary tactics against their host Africans. To the contrary, Africans studying in India and others who went there millions of years known as Jarawa, African stuck in Andaman Island in India, are openly and chronically discriminated against while Indians who were brought as colonial agents are enjoying almost everything. I was born in Tanzania and I was sad to learn about the Tanzanian woman who was killed in Bangalore. I had my High School and college education in India, after graduation I went to Tanzania. I had a job but due to the housing crisis, I had to live in an African village for nearly one year. I was very well treated and I thought even protected, though the Africans never let me know. Indians are a mixture of middle eastern and African. Their skin complexion (when it is dark) comes from black people. There hair (when it is straight) comes from middle eastern. So if they are "racist" they are self-haters. Also, Indians covers a wide range of colors, fair features and hair textures. So, although the average Indian might have straight hair, many do not. Also. Africans are foreigners in India. If they feel that they are mistreated, than maybe India is not the right place to be. Because this is their country and they can treat anyone the way they want. And lastly, the problem that I have with Indians is their Hygiene and their scent that come off their bodies, not so much racism. To be honest, I don't see how and why anyone would want to be anywhere around them. HONESTLY!

That discussion was really enlightening and funny all at the same time. Someone actually tried to excuse the caste system by saying its origin was not built in racism. It makes you wonder about the level of understanding regarding the caste system and the history of the movement of people into India. Then another sought to blame it on the English colonialists. No doubt, the English contributed to it, however racism in India is way larger than the impact of colonialism. Denying what you see in front of you will not cause the problem to go away. It just leaves you irresponsible and neglectful. I call it humanitarian malpractice.
