Surge slash is underrated. Elemental gs is actually a thing in sunbreak, especially if you run into timing problems with some especially egregious endgame loop monsters. Honestly it's not uncommen for vortex III or rising III to hit for anywhere between 800-1200 for me. Yeah, you lose tackle, but strongarm followed by Vortex III hyper armor is really all you need in 90% of cases. Yes, a perfectly played strongarm tcs will deal more damage than surge slash, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't just ignore surge slash. I do run a damage meter in sunbreak (for determining my own performance, I'm not judging or putting other people down with it) and I regularly stay on par or beat strongarm tcs spam with elemental surge slash. Its a preference, really, and you won't be "useless" with surge slash (granted its hard to be useless in monster hunter to begin with. Every little bit helps)
@Chloroxite Жыл бұрын
It looks like a more combo centric playstyle. As someone who fell in love with combo greatsword in Monster Hunter World ICE (Iceborne community patch), it looks like my kind of greatsword

I hope surge comes back in Rise. I've been in love with alternate playstyles sine GU, and Rise scratched an itch I've had for a long while
@EATZYOWAFFLEZ9 ай бұрын
Oh yeah surge slash is definitely good, especially considering how crazy the element stats on Sun break great swords are. I noticed in the video that he was just spamming the light attack combo against the crab, which I found weird, because he could've just gone into tcs. Adamant charged slash also helps keep some of that beeg number damage too.

Why not combine both Surge Slash and TCS in one Skill Set?
@shagohodred24644 ай бұрын
@loqztv I've tried. Too clunky. You're better off focusing on a single playstyle; either elemental surge slash or offensive guard counter tcs spam. Tcs benefits very little from element (and the according skills used)

If it looks cool to you then go for it bruh, just because it does less damage doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. Use whatever you want to use, it isn't all about following the meta, getting big damage numbers or speedrunning the monster, its about having fun with the game, so play with whatever looks good to you. If someone says otherwise then they're objectively wrong.

@romdog1818 Жыл бұрын
@@lesshumanmoredead There still should be balance you know. Strongarm stance has very little downside to it for what it does, he is right to feel the way he does about Surge slash in comparison. That's not to say you are wrong though, cuz yeah, use what is fun, but it's very hard to do so when you see that the alternative fun is just a much, much better option. Balance. Strongarm nerfs (not buffs cuz monsters already die fast enough... The Monsters need the buffing)
@lesshumanmoredead Жыл бұрын
@@romdog1818 "monsters already die fast enough"? Man are we playing the same game? Yeah they can die fast if you're playing with 3 or 4 people or if you're cracked at the game or if you're a speedrunner. But if you're an average or above average player then it takes at least 15 to 20 or sometimes almost 30 mins to take out the higher tier of master rank monsters. Like bro stop complaining that the monsters need buffing, we've already got risen monsters molesting our goofy ahhs and then they added special anomaly investigations? what will they have to add so people like you can stop complaining about the monsters dying fast? Even fatalis and safijiiva took less time to kill than some of these anomaly and risen monsters.

Great guide, sometimes it feels hard to find content that actually discusses all the different options we have with our movesets like this. Like for Surge Slash specifically, I had no idea you could go into a Rising Slash II after the Strong Charge slash. I've been enjoying playing around with all of GS's new tools, so I'm glad you didn't just gloss over switch skills like Backslide (which I think is underrated: it's fun once you get used to it and the bug recharge is really fast) Two little addendums I'd warn for anyone else picking up GS: --I don't think you mentioned, but I think it's important to point out that for Strongarm, while charging, you can execute the initial guard/parry in any direction regardless of where your hunter is facing. Useful since every quarter-of-a-second seems to really matter fishing for those counters, and the moment you see an attack coming out you can counter, you don't necessarily have to have your hunter facing toward the attack: just start charging and hit the left trigger while tilting where you wanna guard. Plus you can angle the guard in a way to kindof fine-tune your aim where the TCS will go towards as well. --For Surge Slash specifically, I'd also warn that Falling Slash II in particular can be dangerous to use since you can't roll out of it or silkbind later than most would think (basically until the hunter has both hands back on the weapon's hilt). The only actions that don't have to wait that long is the third step in the Surge combo like you've shown with Falling Slash III (works with the other two attacks as well, but not with any special variations like Falling), so of course only use Falling Slash II if you plan to commit to all 3 hits.

The amount of care and attention you put into these guides is always incredible to behold, and adding little touches of comedy like Aki's bit, the "Extremely Balanced" pop-up, and the "Charged Plunging Thrust" line at the end made this such a fun watch the whole way through! Also, props to Paolo again for his ever silky smooth narration! Oh, and wtf, I've never even *seen* some of those Surge Slash animations before now. The one where the hunter punches the sword is *nuts* and I love it, lol. Kind of crazy how much impressive new animation work Capcom did for a skill that would almost never end up being used.

The counter TCS playstyle is 70-100+ % better in general. Even more since Frostcraft. Song is "Nay! The honor is all ours" from MHWI. For Surge Slash you can use the same skills as TCS GS. Strongarm works with Surge Slash so if you're using that keep Wirebug Whisperer and OG. You can also use elemental attack if you have slots left but raw is more important overall.

2 things i really learned on my own about strongarm that mightve been too obvious for the guide 1. you have 360 degrees of control while activating, when you hold a direction before pressing zr 2. doing a raw strongarm really isnt the end of the world, and can make the weapon feel very fluid. countering 2 hit moves with tackle -> strongarm is really easy when new to the monster or weapon and does good damage still

Run the skill "Redirection" level 2, and you can use the scroll swap to LITERALLY NEGATE ALL DAMAGE AAAND GAIN BACK WIRE BUG METER. It's a very tight window to activate it, but i think it makes Great Sword a TRUE TITAN class weapon. You'd have: regular rolls, Block, shoulder bash, power sheath, strong arm, and Redirection all at your fingertips as options to deal with monster attacks. Hit so hard you can stagger the monster out of an attack, evade window to roll to safety, block attacks that are too close to avoid, shoulder bash through most attacks, power sheath away from danger, Strong arm to parry an attack and deal a counter, scroll swap to "redirect" negating all damage and regaining wirebug meter. SO MANY CHOICES. GS is GOATED
