It's the characters that made this movie so good and a cult classic. The plot is irrelevant. The Dude is legendary. Walter is perfect too, more deep though, a veteran that has internal turmoil and anger and will never be the same after Vietnam. But it's how they didn't focus/preach or judge on it and insert it into a comedy that makes it more powerful. It just is. One of my favorite movies of all time. Hey guys did you know that every year they have Lebowski Fest in Louisville KY? Look it up, it's fantastic, one day I'll go haha.

The most bizarre part is the movie didn't do that great when it came out in theatres. A lot of critics really didn't get the movie (convoluted/confusing storyline etc) and it didn't do that great in the box office. It wasn't until a fair while later when people were calling for screenings and buying it on VHS that it caught on and people started seeing the hidden brilliance of the comedy in it. Apparently somebody did go back to all the still-living movie critics who crapped on the movie and asked them if they still hold the same view. Most of them admitted they got it way wrong.

The Coen brothers are easily in my top five favorite directors of all time, with "No Country for Old Men" being my favorite film of all time. "Fargo" is also fantastic and has Steve Buscemi (Donny) and Peter Stormare (Karl Hungus/nihilist), and you would love "Raising Arizona" which was the first of many times John Goodman was in their films. I also really love "Barton Fink" with John Goodman and John Turturro (Jesus) and their very first film, "Blood Simple", but they have other great films. I didn't love "The Big Lebowski" when it first came out, and it didn't do that well at the box office, but it's become a cult classic, for sure. I even had a birthday party at that bowling alley one time before it got torn down. Yeah, he's like a Philip Marlowe type detective who just could not be less interested in being the hero of the story.

There are some great lines in this movie..."The dude abides"..."That rug really tied the room together"..."Careful man, there's a beverage here" (I have that quote on a coffee mug). BTW, this Coen Brothers movie is regarded as one of the top movies of all time. And Asia...Sam Elliott's moustache is real.

5:19 "He wrote a check for 69 cents!" Based on the tv dialogue happening in the background, people figured out this was taking place in August of 1990, meaning he also post-dated the check for more than a year in the future.

Such a great movie! Another of my all time favorites! Some fun facts about the movie. The short nihilist in the movie was played by Flea, the bass player from Red Hot Chili Peppers. The girl who cut off her toe for the fake proof of life was singer Aimee Mann, from the band Til Tuesday (Voices Carry was the big hit).

46:10 It probably was meant as a persiflage of Jackson Pollock's (1912-1956) _Action Painting_ The technique and the finished paintings are strongly reminiscent of his art ...however Pollock never hung on a cable 😂

Watching this in the movie theater, the scene with the scattering of the ashes had my eyes watering from laughing. The way the Dude just stands there, defeated in the moment, as Donny's ashes flow over him is so terrible that it's hilarious.

"Why does this guy know my name, though? That was just some random guy." My take, he wasn't just some random guy. He was the narrator, the story teller. He found a way to work himself into the story he was telling.

Great reaction! So glad you both enjoyed this so much, it’s one of my favorite movies but it isn’t easy to get on the first watch. Here’s the deal: Bunny went on vacation. Her nihilist boyfriend and his friends sent the $1,00,000 ransom note to the big Lebowski saying she was kidnapped. He took the $1,000,000 from the foundation but didn’t put it in the briefcase, he kept it for himself. The carpet pissers worked for Jackie Treehorne and were looking to get the money she owed him. I think that’s everybody.

Make sure you guys have some White Russians to enjoy while watching! The truth is the White Russian suffered a bit from a stodgy, antiquated reputation until the 1998 movie “The Big Lebowski” came along and breathed new life into the cocktail with Jeff Bridges’ character, the Dude, sipping it exclusively-and constantly. The White Russian is a decadent and surprisingly easy-to-make cocktail. Combining vodka, Kahlúa and cream and serving it on the rocks creates a delicious alternative to adult milkshakes. When making a White Russian at home, choose a decent vodka (a Russian one, if you want to stay on theme) and a good heavy cream. Half-and-half can work in a pinch, but milk will produce a thin drink. Remember: You’re aiming for decadence. 2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce Kahlúa, 1 splash heavy cream.

Jeff Lebowski was played by Jeff Bridges. Very famous actor and acting family. His father was Lloyd Bridges, origionally in Sea Hunt (1958) And you must have heard of Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
