The long pinky fingernail is to facilitate the use of cocaine or other powdered drug that is snorted (such as snuff which was popular in the 1800s and early 1900s). Casual users are more likely to use a rolled-up piece of paper or straw, but frequent users would need a more convenient tool to be able to do it on the go. Cocaine spoons are a thing, but that's an additional tool to carry around, letting your pinky grow long would give you a small scoop that's with you always. Painting it shows that this guy is not only a heavy user, but is also completely unashamed of that, in fact, he's proud of it.

One of the funniest moments was when Donny was saying I am the Walrus which is a Beatles song and really doesn't mean much but it was fitting as the Dude & Walter where talking and referring to John Lennon at the same time!

If you think the actor who plays Jeffrey Lebowski looks familiar, it's because he played one of the citizens from Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles. Also if you want to see another great film with a great cast involving the both Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman then I recommend Boogie Nights. Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, John C. Riley, Don Cheadle, William H Macy... I mean just packed with stars.

Worked in a movie theater when this came out. We had a crew watching it after hours and got busted by our manager. Theater was filled with weed smoke. 😁

I'm glad you finally reacted to this! It's a classic. A couple of great movies with Philip Seymour Hoffman that I really enjoyed is "25th Hour" and "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead." Definitely worth checking out.

This movie gets better over time. The first time you're trying to make sense of it all, the second time you're watching the brilliant performances, the third time you're noticing new things you somehow missed, and before you know it you're quoting TBL in real life.

The "Big Lebowski," is an allegory of the rumors of confusion when filming "The Big Sleep," based on a story by Raymond Chandler. The Coen brothers must like that stuff. It is interesting.

Oh yeah, dude, I can recommend you two great movies with Philip Seymour Hoffman. One is 'Doubt', with Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. Great cast, incredible acting, and they all play off of each other's characters. Hoffman is a priest in that movie and Streep is the head nun of a school. That movie seems to fly under the radar for many people and I haven't seen many reactions to it, if at all any. And the movie 'The Master' with Joaquin Phoenix. They're both insane in that film. I hope you check them out man. They're always in my library of movies in case I need to watch them again.

20:18 It's established early in the movie, that Walter is a Vietnam veteran with some type of PTSD. He screams about Vietnam when he's pointing his gun at Smoky in the bowling alley

I still remember the first time I saw this film, it was on VHS in 1999. A friend of mine told me I need to see this movie, that it would "Change my life". Crazy to think how ahead of his time he was. I didn't get it on that first viewing... The more times I see it, the more I get out of it. Very much like "Pulp Fiction". Two totally different stories, but if you really think about it, those films are very similar. There's a narrative running through it, but there's no big payoff. Both films end and that's it. That's what was so interesting about independent films in the 90's. "Clerks" and "Dazed and Confused" were very similar. It was more about the dialogue vs what was happening on screen.

Love anything Coen Brothers! Watching all your videos Mello. Keep it going sir. There are some videos I disagree/don’t see eye to eye to your commentary BUT I still like your channel. PS fun fact.. the scene where Julianne Moore talks about sex and stuff is referenced in a Beyoncé song “Partition” in French. I memorized it haha

There's a lot to dig in to. For example Donny had little to no dialogue because at the time Donny's actor Steve Buscemi was known for playing loud mouthed fast talking characters so the Coen bros made this role for him.

other Coen faves - Blood Simple, early, low budget, tight thriller. Fargo, existential true crime vibe. Oh Brother, scruffy white spiritualism. Hail Caesar, riffs on 50s Hollywood.
