That there, with the Zen stuff. You hit the nail on the head. The movie always gives me the feeling we all need a little more Dudishness in the world. A bit more relaxedness - and the ability to enjoy your life even without big dreams... Not to the degree of apathy, but if I had the choice between living a stressful career life or on the other hand living like the Dude... Man, I'm 50 now, ran after the money when I was younger, worked my Teutonic arse off and have NOTHING to show for it, except for some health issues. So - never again. :D

Somebody described this movie as "the Dude refuses the call to action for two hours". And I need to rewatch it in that context. Because originally, this wasn't a movie for me. But the thought of The Plot knocking on the Dude's door over and over, and the Dude being like, "Nah, man, I'm cool." is actually kind of hilarious.

I agree. The characters become much deeper with each viewing, as you understand more and more about why they are each how they are and why they choose to say what they say, and even kind of why they're even friends to begin with. Especially Donnie and Walter. The acting is so strong in this one that you get a lot out of watching characters even when they're not the focus of the shot; at least compared to what I'm used to in more modern movies.

"I love John Goodman" "I love bowling". Man is this going to be a movie for you. 3/5? I would suggest watching it again as it's a lot to follow the first time through. It's basically a classic detective movie with the setting and characters swapped. It's on my rare list of movies with no weak or filler scenes thrown in. Die hard, Hot Fuzz, the Royal Tennenbaums, No Country for Old Men also fit the list.

This is, hands down, one of my all-time favorite movies. It's best described as a stoner version film noir. I had to watch this movie a few times, before I realized, Donnie bowls a strike every time, except the last time, when he leaves one pin standing. After that happened I finally noticed that, as Donnie is walking back to the bench clearly shaken, he is seen rubbing his hand. At first, I didn't think anything of it, but after multiple viewings I finally realized, Donnie was in the early stages of having a massive coronary attack. That's why he missed that last pin, because his arm was starting to tingle (which is an early symptom of an impending heart attack or stroke).

Because they were seen as a symbol of wealth and privilege the common people suddenly really wanted them. The demand by the poor is what ultimately drove the technology and brought the price down to where everyone could have one. If the public had continued to view them as a useless toy, as they were originally, rather than an object of desire, they would still be giant bricks that cost a fortune to use.

For me the transformative moment was seeing a man in a grocery store talking to his wife about what to buy for dinner. He was using one of those large bricks. My reaction was both envy and disgust. I couldn't shake the thought of how much money that man was spending to have such a useless and yet at the same time, very practical conversation. I did not like the visceral feeling of envy that it generated in me seeing that man of wealth in his business suit sans tie talking causally to his wife with this new technology that I did not have access to.

The fact that Julianne Moore is using a mid-atlantic accent the whole time is an incredible joke in and of itself. Layers, yo. I also have no idea how they thought up that character. Remember she didn't grow up with 1940's detective movie reruns on TV. Most of us right away recognized this was a stoner Maltese Falcon like movie. The movie itself is a dig against censorship because if you sensor it the dialog falls apart therefore making it hard to monetize. I have noticed a really huge generation gap I should have expected because the movies my family watched were so iconic. it's a little shocking these kids have no idea there is an entire Golden Age of film that exists undiscovered by them. I went to the theater and saw this. I was in high school then and a friend of mine let me and another friend in to see it since we were not of age. I remembered we laughed our asses off so much! It was great! :P I love John Goodman, grew up with Roseanne on tv. Also right with you about bowling alleys being from a small town that was about all there was to do.
