@@awkwardashleigh there is a cartoon of Robocop because if it was a good movie then it would be a good cartoon show. And even a tv show called Robocop the show but Pete Walker aka Robocop did not return as Robocop in this show and the sequel Robocop 3 and even the movies made by tv .Robocop even made appear on wwe. Because why not. Also iron man has been around since the 1960 so iron man is the first before ,and he's a cyborg part man and part robot . this movie even has been parody in some tv show and movies. So has a Arthur character has been a parody of super man and Robocop called the bionic bunny , and even that is a parody of the six million dollar man aka Steve Austen and the bionic woman Jamie summers of 70's and80's before Robocop.

They turned it into a cartoon after the movie hit big. Video rental places got swag like stickers that say “Protected by ROBOCOP” like one of those alarm stickers. Arcade and console game tie-ins. Toys. Later on, a live action kid friendly series… the late 80s and early 90s had so much Robocop, and then someone decided to make a crossover “Robocop versus Terminator” comic and video game, keeping the series still in circulation in everyone’s minds, and still well known enough into the late 90s for another live action tv series (not so kid friendly this time around). It may not have been THE franchise of the 90s, but it was one of the longer lasting IPs of the era.

"You're fired!" "Thank you." You should have heard the cheering in the theater when this scene happened. Those 2 lines are perfect!! This was such a hugely popular movie when it came out because it was so different. The actor portraying Murphy had to train with a mime in order to get the mechanical movements down like that, which I feel are very effective.

@@peterwalsh2470 - Yes. I go the a theater once or twice a month. Even during "Gran Torino" there was audience reaction....after I cued them in that it was ok to laugh at the way Walt and his barber rubbed each other. ;) I grew up around that kin of banter with my grandfather and the stories of his co-workers. Before he had the costume, Robocop was supposed to be something like a “ninja”. Fluid movements, fast, martial arts etc. They had a martial arts instructor for Peter Weller who went into weeks of training to move like that. He put the suit on, he could barely walk never mind move. A total rethink resulting in the more robotic, precise movements

As for the bleeding from loosing an arm, if a limb gets severed, the muscles around the stump clamp down and greatly reduce bleeding. There's a lot less blood loss than you'd expect. As for the shot to the head, brains are weird. If neither of the arteries is damaged, results depend greatly on areas of the brain compromised, with all sorts of strange and interesting possible side effects.

The thing about Verhoeven is, he's not an American so he sees our culture from a different (maybe more objective) perspective. Most of his American films are like a reduction in cuisine - American culture boiled down to its essence and intensified. Nearly everything is satire to one degree or another. In that regard, he's kind of a maestro of bad taste. His Dutch films have a very different feel and sensibility.

Exactly! Even originally from a screenwritting and directorial point of view this movie was meant to be seen as a parody and was intentionally written and directed as a satirical critique of 80s action cinema with all the over-the-top action and dialogue, especially with the deep subtext of life ethics, robotics, corruption and privatization of public service institutions overimposed with the ridiculous imagery of the overtly graphic and ludicrous reality of that very world; the superfluous and pompous with the awful tv commercials, stupid unnecessary tv shows, incompetent, corrupt and idiotic officials (either political, institutional or law enforcement types), evil corporations which only care about profit, as well as vile criminals (which as satire, it's sadly not very far from our reality), and let's not forget about the Christ figure that the 'hero', Robocop, is, taking the archetype of the saviour of the indestructible "American action heroes" of the 80s and cranking it up to the maximum, to a literal indestructible machine.

When Verhoeven first read the script he quickly realized that the movie would flop because it was just another action flick that was taking itself too seriously. He said it'd work a lot better as a satire, and he was right. Thanks to the rewrite that was done it became a cult classic. Apparently the people who did the remake were lacking in that kind of awareness.

That's not the way I heard it - it was *always* written as a satire, but it was just so "on-the-nose" as written that it didn't come across well - and apparently the corny title didn't help. I think what Verhoeven added was the focus on Murphy regaining his humanity, the Christ allegory (up to and including walking on water) and giving the story some heart. As well as his trademark buckets of blood. :)

it's one of the best movies ever made, and it's very famous, it was a big hit worldwide, it's not an unknown cult thing, it's a mainstream thing, I find it weird you never heard of it. in 2014 there was an awful remake that completly missed the point of the original. this movie has everything, drama, comedy, action, science fiction, social commentary, cool characters, good story, good music, it's awesome!.

One thing about this movie and Starship Troopers is that they are supposed to be satire. For Robocop, it's about how absurd it is to allow for the privatization of public services and corporations allowed to basically control government. For Starship Troopers - well, that's just a straightup satire on fascism.

@@mquiroz90 I'm completely serious. Verhoeven had absolutely no respect for Heinlein's work. The argument that he made a satire is complete BS to me. From a purely science fiction perspective, Verhoeven missed the mark by not including the Mobile Infantry's power suit armor and weaponry; it's the basis for their effectiveness. Heinlein's description of it, how it works, and how it is employed with each soldier in it being dropped from orbit is amazing for 1959. Heinlein's power suit is arguably the inspiration for any mecha that appears in movies, anime, and video games up til now. From a social commentary perspective, Verhoeven's interpretation that Heinlein's world is some sort of fascist/Nazi utopia is a gross misinterpretation; it is simplistic and easy. Heinlein presents a significantly more nuanced, well thought social commentary regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his views. But the whole Nazi/fascist interpretation is incredibly off base, even if it was an attempt at satire. In the book, Johnny Rico is Filipino; not some chiseled white dude that is Verhoeven's idea of Aryan perfection. There is a 1988 Japanese anime adaption of Starship Trooper that is ok, but it at least showed a lot more respect to the source material.

Dick Jones is our main antagonist, but at least his robots didn’t require Frankenstein levels of body horror to achieve it. One of my favorite movies, lol. This is actually my favorite movie ever. Yes, it is incredibly gory, but that was on purpose. The whole movie is one gigantic satire. It spoofs corporate thinking in the 80s. That's why the OCP execs were more concerned about potential lost profits because of the ED-209 failure than the mess that used to be Kenny. It spoofs how violent the media was becoming by taking the violence to unprecedented extremes. A lot of this stuff would be lost on a millennial; so, I don't begrudge you for not liking the movie. Nevertheless, Paul Verhoeven, the director, made another sci-fi action masterpiece that you should enjoy more, Total Recall (which features Arnold Schwarzenegger). Give that one a try.

Love the TV News commercials. Brilliant. Fun Fact: It was discovered that when in full RoboCop costume, Peter Weller could not fit properly into the police car as he was too bulky. That's why most shots of him show him exiting the car or preparing to get into it. For shots where he actually needed to be in the car, he only wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. However, to maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting the car first.

It's part dark comedy and part sci-fi Western, where the protagonist is left for dead. I remember people really got into it in the theater. They cheered out loud in the last scene where he was asked his name. When he turned, said Murphy. Then smiled and walked off. People broke out in loud YEEEEEAH'S! The "Director's Cut" is what is most often seen today, but it originally got an NC-17 rating. Verhoeven had to trim a bit of the goriest parts to get it an R rating for theatrical release. The differences are subtle, but they're still the difference between "Gory!" and "GORY!!"

@@markp9139 NC-17 rating did not exist in 1987. It originally got an X rating witch mean 17+ and it took them 8 different cuts to get the R rating. R rating is 17 unless accompanied by an adult. The ED-209 shooting was originally going on for much longer but it was shortened. Murphy's death had stuff removed like his arm being blown off. They added the TV news reports and ads stuff as well. The weird thing is that a lot of the removed stuff to make it seem less violent make it look more violent in the end. The original cut is just so comically violent. The line "call an ambulance" doesn't hit the same way when Ed-209 shoot a man for 5 seconds compared to when he gets shot for 35 seconds.

@@Caseytify anyone who thinks Verhoeven's masterpiece is bad *because* it's a hideous abortion of Heinlein's novel is entirely missing the point; Verhoeven famously never read the novel and said ""It is really quite a bad book. I asked Ed Neumeier to tell me the story because I just couldn't read the thing." Not saying the book is bad; it's perfectly fine to like the book and dislike the film (and there's plenty of people who like both). But basing a review of the film on it's relationship to the book is dismissing and doesn't give the film credit as it's own standalone piece of art.

PS: Since you mentioned The Thing during Emil's toxic waste meltdown, I guess it's a good time to mention that the legendary SFX artist Rob Bottin worked on both The Thing and RoboCop. The RoboCop suit was his design! 😁

11:00 That gas station explosion has a funny story behind it. The director of Robocop, Paul Verhoeven, was a lunatic who likes things to be as big as possible. In fact, he made that so abundantly clear that when it was time to film the gas station explosion, one of the special effects guys said, "He wants big. We'll give him big." Turns out that gas station explosion was way too big. It shattered windows and set off alarms for several blocks. It also started law changes in Texas (which was where the scene was filmed). After that explosion, the Robocop film crew outstayed their welcome in Dallas.

I think most of Paul Verhoeven's movies fall into a type of genre called dark satire and only have the surface trappings of sci-fi and/or action, if that makes more sense of the tone. When reaction channels finish this movie guessing the last line, like, "What's your name, son?" Reactor: "Murphy!" Robocop: "Murphy." Reactor: "Yay!" I would wager it still managed to connect on some level like it meant to, definitely a good moment. As satire the craziness we can bet was all intended, and it should bring out some laughs, which in any case, for sure, made this a really fun reaction to watch. PS: I just now realized "Millennial Movie Mondays" actually does happen on Mondays and doesn't simply show up in my feed at random like I expect most things to... Wellp, see you next Monday then!
