How To Drink

6 жыл бұрын

On this episode of How to Drink, I am looking at a cocktail made famous by “The Big Lebowski” called the White Russian. This is the first drink within the show that I use vodka, and to be honest the first drink that I’m not a fan of. So because of that I decided to make it two ways. Hope you enjoy. Cheers!
White Russian Ingredients:
- 2 oz or 60 ml Vodka
- 1 oz or 30 ml Coffee Liqueur
- 1 oz or 30 ml Heavy Cream
- Build in Glass over Crushed Ice
Black Cuban Ingredients:
- 2 oz or 60 ml Rum
- 1 oz or 30 ml Coffee Syrup
- 1 oz or 30 ml Heavy Cream
- Build in Glass over Crushed Ice
Coffee Syrup Ingredients:
- 2 Cups Water
- 2 Cups Sugar
- 1 Cup Ground Coffee
- Heat Until Dissolved
- Strain Through Coffee Filter

IMO Stoli is a terrible vodka. You need something relatively neutral, but that does not have a rubbing alcohol nose. (That is why your rum was better.) The coffee liqueur must be sweet with little bitterness, since the vodka raises the bitter notes. Hence, your problem with the chicory coffee and your being fine with your syrup. The cream should also be stirred into the drink. This is not a layered drink, but a new beverage formed through the languid dance of the three ingredients. Abide.

And a side note, while a less fumy vodka can be preferable, I personally feel that vodka isn't needed at all, I often swap out the vodka for more coffee liquor. But, that's just me. A tad of spiced rum (or black spiced) is nice, too. Tastes like Christmas.

Alright, everybody, repeat: "You are not supposed to judge a recipe when altering its ingredients on the first try-out." Basically, while you could use a better vodka or pick a different type of cream and maybe get results you'd find more palatable, using a coffee liqueur that's infused with chicory is a *_HUGE_* no-no for a recipe that doesn't call for any bittering agent! Stick to Kahlua or the like.

@@CRZ_PL It's kinda funny, considering how I hate that you can't get your hands on Grand Marnier Cordon-Jaune (the yellow-ribbon) any more without getting someone to sell their stock (this variant has been discontinued), because it has a different flavour profile from the more expensive Cordon-Rouge (the red-ribbon). "Better" vodka is a difficult thing to define. In Russia, many of the the best vodkas (not always the most expensive) have neutral flavor, this is highly regarded as a quality of the best vodka. What is interesting, is that in the US Market, some of the cheapest vodkas have the most neutral flavor. This includes Popov! I would not choose Stoli for a White Russian, save it for the 2-3 ingredient mixers... my preference for WR would be Absolut, Sobieski, Tito's, or Popov. Also, the drink should be given a brief, non-violent slush around in the shaker. It chills all the ingredients and helps the fat in the cream combine with the rest of the drink.
@RaspK
@RaspK 3 жыл бұрын
@@silvermediastudio Yes, neutral flavour is generally regarded as a good quality; at best, you want the mildest of hints of a flavour, if any. Distinct, notable scents are generally regarded as a defect in Europe.

Thank you for the recipe 🙂 I like the coffee liquorish taste - and it does top all the White Russians that I have made. It shows that rum and coffee goes well together. I made my own syrup from a mix of. cold brew and ground coffee.

I watched this video because I knew a white Russian had vodka and kahlua, and that is what I had available. After watching, I promptly ignored what he did, poured half absolute, half kahlua, and threw in a splash of vitamin D milk. I was happy.

You may be making it as one "should," but IMO the White Russian must be stirred - significantly - as it naturally separates. Your incarnation would (again, IMO) taste like cream with a hint of coffee and vodka.

I really think the St George might be the problem. I LOVE all of their products, but this is one recipe where the Kahlua is the right way to go. It's sweeter and lacks any amount of the bitter that the Chicory is adding.

It has clearly been a while since you posted this video but give the White Russian a chance, it is a fantastic drink. Here in the UK and under good guidance from friends who are mixologists (that's the title they got after having rather too much enthusiasm for cocktails) but the measurements we use are 1 part vodka, 1/2 part kahlua or Cafe patron and then a milk and double cream mix to top out the drink.

I was watching this one and started thinking "What are you doing man!?" This is how I make mine and I love them 2 ounces Kahlua (THIS IS IMPORTANT, DON'T USE TRENDY CRAP) 3 ounces 100 proof freezer stored Smirnoff 3 ounces half and half (I get mine from a diary, so YMMV, I recommend this is where yous pend your trendy money.) Stir ingredients together gently, pour into 12 ounce glass tumbler over 3 medium cubes (or spheres) of ice.

I have to disagree with the Kahlua. Yes it works perfectly fine, but by God, the Ristretto liqueur by the Galliano brand is divine. Still coffee, but just a little extra smokiness.
