IMO Stoli is a terrible vodka. You need something relatively neutral, but that does not have a rubbing alcohol nose. (That is why your rum was better.) The coffee liqueur must be sweet with little bitterness, since the vodka raises the bitter notes. Hence, your problem with the chicory coffee and your being fine with your syrup. The cream should also be stirred into the drink. This is not a layered drink, but a new beverage formed through the languid dance of the three ingredients. Abide.
@DoctahBeats7 жыл бұрын

Alright, everybody, repeat: "You are not supposed to judge a recipe when altering its ingredients on the first try-out." Basically, while you could use a better vodka or pick a different type of cream and maybe get results you'd find more palatable, using a coffee liqueur that's infused with chicory is a *_HUGE_* no-no for a recipe that doesn't call for any bittering agent! Stick to Kahlua or the like.

@@CRZ_PL It's kinda funny, considering how I hate that you can't get your hands on Grand Marnier Cordon-Jaune (the yellow-ribbon) any more without getting someone to sell their stock (this variant has been discontinued), because it has a different flavour profile from the more expensive Cordon-Rouge (the red-ribbon). And that's primarily because CR uses a Cognac base, whereas CJ used spirit. And here we have a chicory-infused coffee liqueur instead of Kahlua. [facepalm] Nooo...

"Better" vodka is a difficult thing to define. In Russia, many of the the best vodkas (not always the most expensive) have neutral flavor, this is highly regarded as a quality of the best vodka. What is interesting, is that in the US Market, some of the cheapest vodkas have the most neutral flavor. This includes Popov! I would not choose Stoli for a White Russian, save it for the 2-3 ingredient mixers... my preference for WR would be Absolut, Sobieski, Tito's, or Popov. Also, the drink should be given a brief, non-violent slush around in the shaker. It chills all the ingredients and helps the fat in the cream combine with the rest of the drink.
@RaspK3 жыл бұрын
@@silvermediastudio Yes, neutral flavour is generally regarded as a good quality; at best, you want the mildest of hints of a flavour, if any. Distinct, notable scents are generally regarded as a defect in Europe.

How does anyone hate White Russian? I hate coffee in general, but I still love that stuff.
@ObservingLibertarian5 жыл бұрын
He made it like a fucking moron is the reason why. Kahlua's a very *sweet* coffee liqueur, that shit he used is literally a coffee bitter, it could not possibly have been more wrong. When you make a drink ass backwards - it's going to taste like ass.

Chicory root did you in man. Any other coffee liquor wouldve done the trick. But *NEVER* add that chicory root St. Georges liquor.

You look incredibly young in this one my man, your more recent videos show a plumper man with a salt n pepper beard and I like you better in the newer videos....it seems more authentic for some reason. But in any case, no matter what version of Greg that I see, your mixology advice is top notch man! Your advice on cocktails and how to make at home is absolutely freakin great,especially for a guy that has just installed an almost fully stocked bar in his livingroom lol

“I’ve never been a professional bartender. I’ve never even had a job in a bar. I don’t worry too much about precision or technique” Some of the people in the comments seem to forget this entirely lol. @Howtodrink - love your videos man and in this particular one (like always) you made it into something you really enjoyed which is wicked! I really want to try your version 👍🏼

Try this: 1-1/2 oz Stoli 1 oz Mr. Black Coffee Liquor 1/2 oz Grand Marnier. It might have that Dr.'s office with coffee vibe for you, but for me, the orange plays off well against the coffee. Maybe add 2-4 drops of orange bitters to tame the sweetness a bit.

I hate vodka in general, so the rum version is a delight, thanks for another great drink Greg. Also Piña colada when ?

I got a free bottle of whip cream vodka, didn't know what to do with it then started making white russians with it and its pretty good. I do a bit less vodka and more coffee liquor. And I am one of those people who usually use half and half. The one he makes looks REALLY good!

Nothing against the original recipe, but I'm Cuban and I approve of his Havana Club infused drink... But you know, that's like my opinion man🤷🏻♂️

Greg! Can you make a the New Fashioned version of the old fashioned? One recipe I found had Havana 7, another sweet rum, maple syrup and aged whiskey bitters with an orange peel garnish. Would love to see your take on it!

I've never heard of this drink, but it sounds like I need to be aquatinting myself with it posthaste.
@wknight81113 жыл бұрын
I like white russians a lot, but I always feel like they need a bit of sweetness. Kahlua has sugar in it, so I usually do a little more kahlua, like 1:1 with the vodka. I don't know if the liquor you used is as sweet. Some variations: mixing in some vanilla vodka (I usually use about .5oz to 1.5oz regular vodka) helps. Sometimes a little more cream can make it a smoother and more "dessert" kind of drink. I tried it with the rum and I do like that though I feel like the rum flavor comes through too much. next time I'll try it with the vodka and normal amount of kahlua, but a dash of syrup to sweeten it up a bit.
@xXZachrawXx6 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer rum to vodka anyway so I'm eager to try th version you made. I'm not much of a vodka guy, maybe you aren't either, it can be good but definitely not my drink of choice.

Greg, do you need to keep the coffee syrup (and the Simple Syrup, fruit syrups, Grenadine, etc.) refrigerated, or do they stay out on top of the bar? I've recently started making cocktails at home, and I'm learning the basics.
@Rose_Butterfly985 жыл бұрын
Had one 2 days ago sort of. On my birthday lol. I kinda liked it. Same vodka but they used Tia Maria for the coffee liqueur. And they lighted it on fire. And added coffee to extinguish the fire. Not much alcohol in that one.

Thanks you are just too funny. I know I’ll like the black Cuban , oh you’re expression when trying the White Russian, I could relate.
@f.e.87827 жыл бұрын
First off ... stir it ... So you blend the ingredients .. secondly .. go neural in the vodka and on the coffee liqueur... stoli tastes like you are chewing on an alcohol swab ... yoh want pure coffee liquors.. not exotic with a touch of whatever like your choice .. Just stick with Kaluha.. Belvedere or even Smirnoff.. with Kaluha .. stir the drink and you'll be fine

@modetallah5 жыл бұрын
@@wilsonkowira383 It may be served that way but you should always stir it before drinking. Don't be a fucking mong. Otherwise you're drinking straight up cream and not tasting anything else.
@DiGiTaLFaKiE5 жыл бұрын
Its definitely the coffee liquor you used. You have to use kalua.
@slepwick015 жыл бұрын
Not saying you did this "Wrong" because maybe the place where I bartended did it wrong but for rocks glasses we usually did 2 oz alcohol pours. So 1.5 oz. vodka, .5 oz. Kahlua fill with 1/2-1/2 , milk, heavy cream, w/e you use. That change in proportion will help bc to me coffee liquer is overpowering and you're doubling up.
@ralphspradley79885 жыл бұрын

You order this drink in any bar on earth it’s a layered drink. Every cocktail guide written, including the IBA, regards it as a layered drink.
@JR-yn2kl6 жыл бұрын
How To Drink It's actually supposed to be a carefully stirred drink. A lot of bars make cocktails for speed and a lot of bartenders do NOT know or remember how to correctly make every drink. If you look at the IBA recipe it also says to stir the drink. iba-world.com/cocktails/black-russian/
@symbioticvenom64566 жыл бұрын
shaken or stirred and i think you do not have no taste buds if you don't like it.

Awesome video. I also thought the black cuban was so much better than white russian. However, put the kalua anyway, it makes it so much better.
