Gene Krupa was the most musically creative of them all. His unique way of hitting the drums to get certain sounds was truly a gift from above. Yes, technique and chops are important but knowing where and when to incorporate it is just as important for me. Gene had respect for the other musicians and never overplayed from what I've ever seen, read, or heard. Gene was 1# for me period. RIP Gene

Have you ever listened to the song they did with Benny Goodman, including Lionel Hampton in the 1930's or just into the 40's,, where the three of them take solos one at atime, and keep going faster and faster?? Unbelieveble!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Krupa does some super-duper snare drum work. Never seen anything like it since!!!!

@@newmoon54 I think you're talking about something else but that reminds of their performance in the movie Holiday Hotel, one of my all-time favorite recordings ever. Gene could make floor toms sound like tympanies, and get the soul out of a set of skins while leading the band with it. There are a lot of great technical drummers, but to me, Gene got real music from his. That is what makes him my all time favorite!

I had just graduated from high school this year and Benny was my total hero! I was an aspiring clarinet player and my bands played many of his songs. My band backed up the yearly class stage show that year where I was going to Henry Ford community college and our featured number was Benny's Bugle! It's now 60 years later and I love replaying the recording even now that we made during that show!

This is brilliant stuff from every musician. Boy does it swing. Yes Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich are my top 2 drummers. Love Buddy’s blazing talent behind a kit an unstoppable force of nature but Gene has that swinging musical something that warms the very cockles of my heart. Gene almost sings jazz drums & is wonderful in this star studded clip. Best to you all in great music:- Chris 🎼

Totally agree about the musicality of Gene Krupa as a drummer. He swings like the clappers but never forgets playing the drums as an instrument & the various rhythm patterns, sounds & dynamics. Also lights & shades but a great powerhouse too when that’s required. I love Gene’s style and find him a great inspiration. My favourite player of all the greats & there are plenty of those. Yours in drums 🥁….. Chris

How did Gene play with sticks at the beginning and make it sound exactly like brushes? I've seen hundreds of drummers play Swing quietly with sticks on the snare drum alone. But I've never heard it sound like brushes. I know the TV broadcast quality isn't the best, but this still shouldn't be possible. I'm just so amazed by this.

@@geoffnelson4777 Well I know he had Leukemia but it's a type of cancer.. My late friend Andy Florio said Gene would call him in the months before he died he was obviously very upset,... Also Andy told me Gene had a house fire and lived in the house after the fire... He (Andy) told me he lost a lot of his drums in the fire. Andy also provided the radio king lugs to Slingerland because Mel Torme said he wanted Gene's drums he used with Goodman and when it was found out they were destroyed Slingerland contacted Andy and bought the lugs off him (they were pot lugs from the 40s not 30s era lugs) and put them on new shells (I found that out because I saw Torme on TV lying about the drums) and called Andy and he fessed up to the BS that Slingerland and Torme pulled.
