The BIG Problem With The Bad Batch…

I am so torn on the latest season of the Bad Batch. Some episodes are completely forgettable while others are in my opinion some of the best animated Star Wars we’ve seen. But I think I know the problem. And it might be a bit controversial for some of you. So far I think the best episodes have been the ones that have focused on pretty much anyone else but the core team. I thought the episodes with Commander Cody, Rex and the most recent one with crosshair truely were impeccable. It mostly boils down to Character and plot development. In the episodes with Cody and Crosshair we see both Clones begin to question their loyalty to the Empire and ultimately betray the Empire. During the episode with Rex, the plot was massively driven forward by Palpatines decree that the Clones will be replaced with Stormtroopers. However, in the episodes solely starting the Bad Batch, they are generally treated as filler. None of the team really experience any character development while the plot isn’t really driven forward. In my opinion, this might be because the Bad Batch, are as characters pretty ridgid. Tech is the nerdy one,, wrecker is the strong but dumb one etc. Although I don’t want them to get rid of these characters, I just don’t think they should be the main characters. Perhaps a show starring Rex, Echo, Cody and maybe even Ahsoka would be better. Then you could still have the Bad Batch as occasional side characters. I think the main problem is they’re trying to explore too many different characters plots at the same time. Because of this, they start to run out of ideas for some areas

Honestly, I agree with how you feel that the episodes with solely the squad feels more like filler than anything. However, I’ve enjoyed watching some of the episodes with only them. For example, the first two episodes of the season I thought were a good and fun way to get us back into the series. And the latest episode I thought was kinda nice, showing how they’ve been on the run for so long, traveling from place to place, that they haven’t had a place to call home in a long time, and now they might have found that place. Though, there are plenty of forgettable episodes, like the budget podrace one, and some episodes I thought should’ve had more continuation, like reintroducing a goddamn Zillo beast! I do wish that this season was just, I guess more than it is.

the issue with the badbatch is like 3 episodes actually felt like a bad batch story progression while the rest felt like filler and not just filler but a setup for a completely different story that would have zero to do with the bad batch

They should have just made more Clone Wars seasons. George Lucas even said he planned to have much more Clone Wars stories. But then Disney cancelled the show.

Bad Batch itself is a great show concept. But honestly, we care more about seeing the growing state of the Empire more than we care about the team itself (except Crosshair). They needed better character development, and probably should have been more involved in the Clone rebellion.

I just hate how everything revolves around Omega. I absolutely don’t want the Batch to become civilians. Also, I disagree with you on the characters. I think there is a lot of room for good material. It just isn’t used properly.

Well I don’t think the core team is the problem, it’s just most of their episodes are not well written and just feel like something is missing. We all want to see the sith hunting jedi and the main plot advancing, and even the episode where that Wookiee Jedi appeared felt kinda empty. I would like to see an episode where the bad batch actually faces a real threat like an inquisitor after they try to help a Jedi that’s being hunted, or just straight up jump to the empire’s perspective, showing us some of darth vader, the emperor, etc.

I don't think that they should get to Ahsoka yet. Remember, at this point she is still most likely at the settlement we see her at during Tales of the Jedi. Plus, not everything has to be clone wars fanservice. The star wars galaxy is massive with billions of potential characters, we can't just stick to 10 or 20 people.

Although I 100% agree with you in your interpretation, I'm pretty sure he meant we should have had a seperate show with them, so timeline wouldn't exactly matter. And I agree, I love ahsoka but they've overused her a lot lately and it makes the universe feel pretty small. Although, I suppose if the show had Rex in in it wouldn't be too much a stretch to have her show up too, considering the two are close.

I’m still not really seeing the point of Omega as a character. She’s a female clone, sharing DNA with all the Clone Troopers, there’s not any others around like her so why is there no real story about her existence? Seems like she was added just for the sake of adding her and that’s a shame.

Why is it that set-ups are seen as "filler"? Y'all need to have some patience. Episodes with the group *are* progressing the story - they just aren't full of angst, like the Crosshair episodes. It seems as if people think that unless you are in a dark place, both literally and figuratively, it can't be "good" or "important" for story progression. We learned as much about the Batch in Ep. 13, for example, as we do about Crosshair in Ep.12, but it feels "lighter", as if nothing of importance is taking place there on Space Maui. But, in reality, all that action/adventure story is doing is giving us a feeling of Doom Approaching. Here is what they've been looking for: a safe place, a home, people they can help and who will help them without it being transactional, a place where friends and lovers could be found, and finally, a place for Omega to have a life and an identity beyond 'child soldier. And we know that it isn't going to last. There can be no peace when there's an evil empire running things, so they are dangling the 'here's everything they've ever wanted - peace and happiness at last!' in front of them (and us), only to brutally snatch it away just when it starts to look as if it could be real. If watching the characters suffer is what makes a good episode, then this next one's going to be off the charts "good". The Batch's presence will lead to the destruction of paradise, Omega will be captured and sent to be used as a hostage, and maybe more; as Crosshair is lost to the Empire - not of his own free will. Whether or not this gets resolved before season's end will, I guess, tell us if there will be a season 3. That's plenty of story development for me.

I wish for clone wars tv show for adults (i mean by this violence breaking borders of star wars as a franchise, destruction and war crimes) where we will see wider picture of clone wars as galaxy wide conflict from perspective of other characters not only anakin, obi-wan, ahsoka, rex, cody etc.

The thing about the "filler" episode is that it leads to Cid's betrayal as the batch hasn't delivered anything to her and will need to cut her loses

I feel like as characters for a couple of episodes is what the bad batch excell at and by the end of it you know who they are and what they are about. To stretch the characters over the length of several seasons is to their own detriment.

To me I don’t want to see the bad batch settling down and just hanging out, and every episode focusing on them is in some shape or form about that is messing up the show, it’s supposed to be about clone spec ops trying to make there way not settling down and starting a farm and so I think that is subtracting from the show.

The bad batch is essentially two shows rolled into one and thats the biggest issue with the series. You've got tbb runnig around doing whatever and the eps are more light-hearted and then you've got the gritty early imperial days from the perspectives of the clones and how things have shifted so quickly (far too quick imo, very unrealistic and stupid to remove the clones from service so quickly and hastily when they're the best soldiers in galaxy). I seriously wish we just got 2 seperate shows with a couple eps here and there where they crossover like say tbb helping fellow clone deserters or something. This show is 2 seasons in just feels like utter wasted potential and, at least imo shows the problem with the guy running it; Dave Filoni. Dave has great ideas but pretty bad execution which is ironic given george lucas was the exact same. Unpopular opinion but rebels was similar in that it had the ghost crew but ended up widening the story and incorporating so many different characters and storylines that honestly didnt need to be there or couldn't be fleshed out fully and by the end i was more interested in the fan favourite characters brought in than any of the ghost crew outside of hera and kanan. Maul relaistically doesn't belong in the series, neither does ahsoka after S2, thrawn was decent but also felt neutered, we had a bunch of silly side quests and as much as it was about the rebellion it just felt somewhat meh to me and with andor now out to me thats everything rebels should've been. Add his work with bane in tbobf (more Jon's failure but this is likely where he had the most input in the series) and i really think he's creative brilliance died with tcw, even S7 overall would be hated if it wasnt for the final arc being as good as it was (ahsoka beating maul is bs, tho i wont get into daves nepotism towards his characters). Tbb is very flawed in its foundation and i don't think im gonna sit there week to week for the next seasons just to barely enjoy even a quarter of the eps.

@@diegomendez3943 cos what is his reason for being in the show other than rebels being treated as a sequel to tcw (which it shouldn't have been)? It never really felt like organic storytelling to me, just like a writer who wanted to include someone regardless of whether or not it made sense for the story and universe. This got worse when he stayed longer in the show and then his whole story was wrapped up in rebels rather than told elsewhere (my biggest issues with the character) and that's on top of the fact u had rather prominent fan favourite characters show up also like ahsoka, rex and thrawn. Filoni has a massive problem with this generally which started in rebels and has continued in his other works where he feels the need to include those he's worked on in other works regardless of whether or not it feels organic. Look at kanan in tbb, there's a whole comic detailing order 66 from his pov (worth a read, much better version than tbb) and yet its retconned and changed into tbb for no reason. As nice as it was seeing ahsoka in mando and live action I wouldn't say she truly belongs there, like yh that fits luke showing up for grogu and showing the way, her not so much.

Although Order 66 was retconned it doesn't mean the whole story before and after order 66 didn't happen. Maul wasn't in the show that much and why not have a closure to his character and Rebels it's the perfect way for his story to end.

Actually the episodes where echo left and the following, showed character development with them adapting to echo being gone and how omega feels about it. Also the last couple of episodes where sid is portrayed as slowly turning on them and them wanting to leave... yes 2 or 3 episodes feeling like filler, but the rest are excellent... but thanks for the great videos...

Imo I feel the problem with bad batch is omega, ever since she joined the squad they've gotten sloppier and less interesting. They're literally running errands because of her when they could have joined rex. Echo did the right choice by leaving the squad and joining in with Rex. They need to drop omega and regroup with crosshair and start doing some really dangerous and dark missions

Well, technically, I kinda what Delta squad tv show set in clone wars to order 66. I wanted to know what happened to Fixer, Boss, and Sev? we know Soorch survived, stay loyal to empire. Also, I think a bad batch tv show should have set during Clone Wars era 22bby having only Hunter, Crosshair, Tech, and Wrecker, could have more character developed.

I have to disagree on a few points here. Yes, the boring episodes are the ones with the Bad Batch. No, Disney shouldn't have a show centered around Rex, Cody and everyone else. I think there are three ways this problem can be solved: 1. Character development for the core team. 2. Less filler episodes 3. A smaller number of episodes per season (8-10) but with each episode having a slightly larger runtime (40-45 mins).

Rewatch clone wars season 1 and ask yourself: Would I like this if one episode released every week? Guarantee most would say it's mid. Also, the first two seasons of Bad Batch were recorded back to back, so season three will be where it hits its stride.

I think that the short episode format makes it hard to explore so many side characters with interesting storylines while keeping the Bad Batch name. Andor did it really well, but required generally three long episodes to close an arc, and an entire season to reach a rallying point. I have a feeling that all those disparate episodes of the Bad Batch are actually driving towards a similar merging of the stories. I'm not convinced that there are that many truly filler episodes, even if this is how they feel taken in isolation and at this point in the season. But it is hard to judge until it all comes together with a climactic season ending.
