The BIG Problem With US Mail Trucks Going Electric
Upgrading the current fleet of government-owned mail trucks in the United States has caused a long-standing disagreement between President Biden’s administration and the US Postal Service.
There is a consensus from both parties to change these trucks, but the government wants them to be powered by electric. USPS, however, would rather have them powered by good old gasoline fuel.
And from the look of things, we’ve not seen the last of this controversial back and forth just yet.
Welcome to Motordeck, where we give you the latest automotive news on the world's top car manufacturers and their technological innovation. Our focus is to delve into everything auto, ranging from new EVs, to hybrid cars, to gas guzzlers. Whether you want insight into the world's electric revolution or to get a sense of that billionaire lifestyle, you can find it all here at Motordeck.

They honestly should just do what ford did in the late 1990s. Get the commercial grade ford explorer like you see in medical or police forces (or also the ford e series chassis may work) and then contact Ultimaster to make a mail truck body! Combine two and two, then you have a modern efficient gas mail truck that realistically would work.

Seems to me that a fleet setup like the Post Office would be better served if changeable batteries where used. Would make for a better way of charging them, eliminate the need for all of the outside charging stations and be able to do a battery replacement out on the rout if needed. The draw back would be the need for more employees to perform the daily battery changes.

The problem with this electrical, green new deal, pipe dream is it has not been fully thought through. Mostly all the the current Post Office stations have no room to put in charging stations for all electric vehicles. Let alone a suitable power grid to support such a draw on the local power grids where the Post Office/ Stations are currently located. It’s going to take billions of more taxpayer dollars to go all electric.

That's true, but there are ways of circumventing issues with that. You can run battery heaters in the depot, and/or charge them quickly while heating the cabin. Then, through the use of seat heating and steering wheel heat, you can maintain heating and body temps with much less energy and the battery will already be warm enough anyway.

The designers seem to have grand ideas about the designs of any postal trucks. The LLV was/is a joke in snowy weather due to the inset alignment of the front steering wheels. When driving in snow, the back wheels do not track in the same track as the front, causing more resistance for the rear 2wd tires. As I understand it, the LLV will never be surplused due to this operational safety consideration. They evidently are sent to a recycler to be destroyed.

But at least they had good ground clearance and had a Larger Cargo area for your Parcels unlike these Failures to be do. @@jebbthetrainkid1281 I agree with what you say about the handling. As a rural carrier, you roll the windows down and let the air in best as can be. The AC thing was something that USPS never installed due to the extra maintenance. Not sure how it will work with the engines always shutting down/restarting. They will most likely be using the new class 2L flammable refrigerants. On the LLV, I believe they put an engine shut off device attached to the seat when the driver got out to save fuel or reduce pollution. Either way, not too sure it really saved much. They probably went thru many flywheels after this mod.

I agree with L. Townsend's assessment below. Also, one of the features of the new vehicle is the low ground clearance, which will negatively impact during snow - wintery conditions. The estimated range for EVs is 70 miles - limiting them to inter-city use. Rural routes and routes that encounter hilly or even mountainous terrain will shorten the range. Other features such as AC/backup cameras, mirrors, and the huge windscreen are needed safety features. De Joy's primary mission is to deliver the mail, by any means necessary not follow "green new deal pipe dreams" that are short-sighted and depend on an already overburdened electrical grid dependent on fossil fuels.

I read somewhere that it was some wire harness near the firewall that rots out from age or corrosion, causing the wires to contact each other and short out/cause fire. Simply put, even perfectly maintained ones could inherit the issue. You could argue them changing the harnesses, but the amount of labor involved would exceed the value of the vehicles themselves.

Truth is we have our own in-house mechanics. So what u ask? They don't get paid per truck per job. They work hourly. Meaning, they do the bare minimum with poor maintenance which equals to fire hazard vehicles. Basic and easy fixes are weather stripping around hood, doors, and windows which wear out causing water to leak into the fuse box amongst other parts and cause severe damage to the point of becoming fire hazardous. If we contract 3rd party mechanics, these trucks can run for another 10 years (not exaggerating)

@@DACoutBack They aren't cleaner. Lithium batteries are an environmental nightmare. Nor are they safe unless implemented correctly. They can rapidly burst into flames quick enough for the driver to not be able to escape. Also fire departments have a super hard time putting out EV fires. They will burn until there's nothing left despite what firemen do, while also potentially catching nearby houses on fire. Also electric vehicles and legit burst into flames out of nowhere. ICE vehicles always have some outside reason for catching alight. For example, maybe a crash, poor maintenance, or aftermarket parts that weren't installed correctly. Rarely does a ice vehicle burst into flames while sitting in the garage.. Yikes. . . You also don't need a torque monster for delivering mail. Not to mention, batteries will only last so long. They literally have a pre determined amount of charge cycles before the bms will limit range. Its truly shameful that Electric vs ice vehicles have been politicized. With that comes soooo much false information that people use to support their bias. Sadly the clueless of us tend to believe what we see on the news instead of doing our own research for facts. I do believe that electric vehicles have their place in the modern world. However, the technology and especially the infrastructure needs to improve. Imagine trying to drive your tesla during the rolling blackouts cali has every year.......Plus don't force people into electric cars over politics. Give the people a choice in the matter. Please, if you contest, please keep it civil and state your reasonings. We could surely come to an agreement at a point.

@@cadenswain158 Wow, those were quite a few points. I'll assume you know that there are 140,000 car fires per year in the US. That means over 383 per day. These are figures with 95% ICE population so ICE vehicles do catch fire. In 1980 the national figure was 410,000 per year so things are better. Several studies of EV fires show they ignite less often. The fires are different but I read at least one article that said a gas vehicle fire is just as bad but in different ways, like leaking gas spreading a fire. ICE vehicles do cause fires once they are parked in a house or other places. So far there are many examples of EV batteries lasting many 100s of thousands of miles. This is still an ongoing situation that will show what types of batteries last longer and under what conditions. A company like Redwood Materials is recycling batteries. The number of batteries to be recycled are low because they are still in vehicles that work. You have a choice and will for many years to come. Buy an ICE vehicle if you want but I think in a short time it will become obvious that an EV is a better choice. At some point gas will become hard to find. If that is the future, then making a gas vehicle, that lasts 30 years for the Post Office, seems like a bad choice.

But my power grid... the post office being made to handle electric vehicles forces tax payer money to flow into the power grid.... Meaning When it's all said and done the power grid gets better.

What do you think this is going to cost Usps in California where the price of electricity is the highest in the country. Oh ya and rolling blackouts in the summer. You will show up and your vehicle is only half charged. The heat of the summer will drain the battery’s faster. What a good idea.

Why would you need chargers on the route? I use 10 miles on my route and even if you use 100 miles on a route the average EV should get you over 150 miles on a single charge. So again why would you need charging stations on a route?
@ronfullerton3162
@ronfullerton3162 Жыл бұрын
It is not chargers on the routes, but a bank of chargers at the post office to charge them all for rhe next day. Many post offices are not currently in an area with heavy enough infrastructure to support multiple charging units. Either heavier service would need to be ran in, or a new motor facility obtained where there is enough power.

Add AC or Heating in an EV cuts the range down. If it's cold, the batteries also have to heat themselves. There's a lot more than clean energy you have to deal with that wouldn't if they'd just gone like a super small Ford Transit with the steering on the wrong side. It's the government. Someone had a friend with defense and an under the table thing went down. If you ever want to know why Rome failed, it was probably the little things that put it into a position where a big thing toppled the tower.

If all of them are electric they will have to upgrade each facility for chargers including street transformers. The local electric companies probably can't supply all needed for them and the public. Washington didn't think again.

One of the smartest guys in the room, Jeff Bezos of Amazon is planning an electric fleet. The most wear and tear on the engine, fuel consumption, and brake wear happens with the starts and stops. The lower maintenance, regenerative braking plus solar energy will pay off in the long run. This prototype can't be the final truck. Any fleet owner much less the Federal government would want to pay thousands of dollars to replace that huge windshield. The final design needs to be done by an industrial design firm.

That next generation delivery vehicle does not deem to be a next generation, it looks worse than the original historic US Postal Service truck. Where does the conspiracy lay here? the court found five cause of action against USPS, for capricious behavior and un compliance to the duty of National Environmental Protection Agency. USPS enter into an agreement with OSHKHOSH Defense, who is the owner? undermining NEPA Postal Service paid 482 million in advance which help OSHKHOSH to open a manufacturing company in S Dakota. The court rule that the USPTS pay for all the expenses of the plaintiffs attorney fees. And order USPS to vacate the contract until revise by the court. Suppose USPS goes bankrupt? Politicly, let's face it; voting ballots and political propaganda is the majority of revenue during elections, what about the useless tons of paper delivered to your door is that not considered pollution?. The USPS delivers medications but who pays for the postage? of course health insurance, county hospitals. I am sure they come up with a process to deliver. We must innovate and not be afraid of new processes. have you seeing a Happy postal worker? USPS is always hiring , the benefits are not what they used to offer, in San Jose CA. the hourly paid rate to entry level postal worker's is below minimum wage. USPTS reminds me of another giant taking us for a ride, giant monopoly PGE in Ca. Back to USPS, final question; is USPTS even worth keeping? I like to see if you haven't Motordeck, make a video about PGE and i'ts monopoly. Thank you
