The Big Valley Meets Bonanza!

Here's a little something for all you Bonanza and Big Valley fans :) I just love both of these classic tv westerns.

The big valley was is the best show. As a nine-year-old little girl watching the reruns there was nothing on TV for a little girl to look up to. Barbara Stanwyck in the big valley gave me so much hope. She was a strong independent woman and the show tackled a lot of issues in its day. The rest of the westerns were all men. Men controlling everything. Barbara Stanwyck was the shining star for a little girls like me

Bonanza and the Big Valley ... oh boy, does that bring back memories! That was when men were MEN! Really good pix, but the music is absolutely GREAT. I especially love the orchestral arrangement of the 'Bonanza' theme. Thanks for sharing, ambicraig!

Bonanza may have been more popular, with a much longer series run, but I preferred Big Valley--higher production values, richer character development, strong female lead, riskier storytelling. Bonanza was fun to watch, but Big Valley pulled me in, even made me think sometimes.

I enjoyed the family values of bonanza. The actors were well chosen. It was a show of morality and integrity. It moulded my life. Great show indeed. Trinidad.

I love both series. Bonaza gets my vote as best TV show ever made. It had it all: superior cast, excellent guest stars, great scripts, action, outdoors scenes (its specialty), horses, cattle, wonderful theme music, and fabulous color. It was a blockbuster.

You just took me 35 years back. I been alawys different boy from my peers back that time in Jordan. Poor boy with rich heart , brave heart from abused minority. Full of values in a materliasc community. An orphan raised by the barkleys. Working and living in Utah any time I feel sad mad or deoressed I watch the big valley. I feel that I am living with them and I wish I travel through time and meet all of them. Thanks

I could imagine Joe, Hoss, and Heath getting along together perfectly. The same goes for Jarrod and Adam. They both seem like they are twins who have never met. Nick may have gotten along with Joe the most.

Ah...so they were on occasion :) That was kinda neat. Oh, and Pernell Roberts (Adam Cartwright) was occasionally on 'The Big Valley', too. I guess all of them were in the occasional Western movie, too. I love watching them all act...especially if they're together in the same film. People really could act back then and draw you into the plot. It's awesome to get to watch it today.

Bonanza season 1-6 was, is and will be my favourite, my Adam 😊. Started watching Big Valley because of Pernell Roberts, the two episodes he played along. In BV I like Nick and Heath and Jarrod. For me Bonanza is on place #1 and on 2nd place High Chaparral, uncle Buck. BV is 3rd place. Rawhide ( which the music was from you used introducing the Barkleys) was also a good show. Young Clint Eastwood.

I love both tv shows, though I'm slightly biased towards "The Big Valley", if only because it's one of the few westerns set in California...which is as far West as you can get. (I know, I live here in CA.)

It ought to not surprise anyone that when Bonanza, after a long and successful run on German television in the late 1960s, was taken off the air over there, The Big Valley replaced Bonanza in it's timeslot. The Big Valley then ran for a little over a year, then was replaced by another series right up the same alley: The Virginian.

Bonanza gets my vote; the story lines were always different and the cast was great. I like the Big Valley too because of the serious scripts. Both were equally great, though.

You know...I've wondered the same thing, too :) A few years ago I actually wrote an episode of "The Big Valley" meeting "Bonanza". Hey, what can I say...a young girl's fancy with so many gorgeous cowboys will fill her head up with all kinds of silly notions :) My writing will never be put to TV, though, because NO ONE could fill the characters like the originals did. No one can hold a candle to them. The crossover woulda been lovely, though...that's for sure! :)

When I was a boy, I preferred Bonanza, as did all boys. Who could resist HOSS! As I grew up I came to feel that Bonanza was a touch cartoonish and that Big Valley was more sophisticated in story line and character development. I could be wrong, but is my assessment.

You are correct... Two of the best of all Westerns ever anywhere. The stories were exciting and the colors and scenery of both shows was the very best ever. Sorryfully to say, the studios will never come up anything like this before the end of time. All we see now is cheap one room crap... big faces and moving lips all over our screens. No scenery, just faces. Folks, you have seen the best, and reruns are a gift. Be grateful when youi see a rerun of Bonanza or Big Valley. Milbourne.

I watched all the TV westerns back in the day ... of reruns, when I was a kid and they were on in the afternoons, mid-1970s. My favorite, both show and theme song, was The High Chaparral. I liked the Big Valley theme better than Bonanza's, but probably enjoyed Bonanza a little bit for the episodes. Very close call, though.

I have yet to see 'The Virginian' and 'Lancer'...but I'm sure they were good shows, too :) My mom also likes 'The High Chaparrel'. She liked the man who played the character 'Monilito' on the show. The only thing I never understood about that show is how 'John' snatched up the pretty young woman who played 'Victoria'...LOL!

They've finally released the first season of Bonanza on DVD, split into two volumes. Hopefully they will sell well enough to justify the release of more seasons. The Big Valley stalled out after they released only one and half seasons due to poor sales.

Bonanza was the better show, but they were both good. I often wondered why the two shows never got together and did a crossover episode. I mean, the Cartwrights and the Barkleys were the two most prominent families in their respective areas, and these areas were not geographically that far apart (Lake Tahoe and Stockton), so it would make sense that they would know each other.

It's really hard to find bonanza episodes. I don't think they've ever made a "season set" on DVD or VHS. You can sometimes find 2 or 3 Bonanza episodes on DVD...but that's about it. They used to show Bonanza on TV Land and tv classic stations. Maybe if you find it on tv you can record it? Or check online to see if you can buy episodes. I wish they'd bring out all the seasons for us to buy. That would be AWESOME!

The people that owned the Big Valley " made so many mistakes when they snatched this great show off the air. Then they came back with some lane-brain sequel that was half-written and sorrowfully directed. What a wast of money and story writing.
