im 54 and my soul was already destroyed in decades of callcenter jobs, and not being able to free myself of my limitations and constrictions, so i dropped out of the workforce with health issues, clawed my way back into acceptable living conditions, bought a ruck, all the base gear for going camping, got my fat bike and have so far only used the tent once last year for a 3 nighter on a shitty parking lot for campers. At least i got a discount by the owner cuz i was the only guy with a tent, and it was next to the river elbe in Hamburg ^^. I feel so locked in by all the regulations concerning camping in my country thats its demotivating to even go and do it because you arent allowed to camp where you want, make fire just about nowhere, aside maybe a river bank, or have to pay ridiculous prices just to pitch a tent on some boring camping ground with a ton of people on flat mowed lawn with no nature vibe at all.

At the end of the day it is not about content, it is about you, and how good you are as a presenter. I am sure back in the 80s there were dozens of steeplejacks, but there was only one Fred Dibnah. Keep the audience interested and they will stay with you even if you take your content off on another tack.

For the first time in 15 years I went camping and enjoyed it again, I figured I’d do it more, but my gear needed an update . So I searched for x and y ending up with loads of Tubers saying buy x y z coz it’s light and compact. Then the algorithm suggested you. You were the first one to be honest and say if you’re bothered about weight, lose some yourself first. Then I subscribe and have been watching all your previous content. I like the long short and especially these mini vlogs, the algorithm might be changing and saturated, the genuinely helpful people shine in the end. Thanks

I tend to agree. The KZbinrs I watch now are 100% because of their character. It doesn't matter to me what they make a video about. in the real world we don't only have conversations about one subject with the people close to us so why would you need the same content from your favourite characters on KZbin.

@@PaulMessner 100%. While my main hobby is hiking, I subscribe to channels spanning politics, cooking, outdoors, travel games, sports etc. etc. While I will have initially discovered these channels due to a specific video title or topic, I have stayed for years because of the characters and personalities. I always said that I would watch 'Top Gear' if they were making a program about blotting paper because it was their personalities that I enjoyed...I actually hate driving! Make whatever you want to make, and if you want to go back to the dayjob and keep outdoors as a hobby then that is also an equally respectable decision. I gained a very small amount of attention for a hiking project I did a few years ago, and thought about capitalizing on this by starting to write some walking guides and attempting a few videos. It completely ruined the experience and made me feel like I was watching a documentary of someone else going walking, rather than enjoying it for myself. Look after your own happiness and fulfillment first!

I guess it's because it's more of you instead of "the tent guy" .... you got me thinking though lol ... about the expence of long distance trips and all that .... the answer as ever is bicycles .... ever considered it?

Enjoying your videos. I watch another You Tuber called Liam Brown. He does hiking trips both in the UK and abroad. It is nice to see a hike in a different place, or country. Many can't afford a holiday, or through health problems, can only live vicariously through the adventures of others. There must be a lot of historic places of interest near where you live. How about a visit to explore those? I think a lot of people would have liked to see inside the Blue John mine. I think I had a coffee there made with the mineral water from the mine. It tasted disgusting. Lol The little memories in life that remain with us. I took some relatives to visit St.Patrick's grave and to the little local gaol in Downpatrick. They were able to visit the small cells and see a scold's bridle and wooden stocks and learn about people being transported to Australia for stealing items like a hankerchief. People are interested in the lives of their ancestors and it may be a way of showing them, to engage a wider audience. I'm just throwing out some ideas for you to consider. Best wishes to you and Jo.

It’s all a matter perspective. 10,000+ views in 6 hours is amazing! Who are you comparing yourself to? I’m subscribed to lots of Bushcraft channels who would be happy to get 100 views in 6 hours. I’ve done several channels and I get it - KZbin isn’t easy; it’s allot of work. Grind, grind, grind for $150.00 per month Adsense. When you’re putting in 50+ hours per week! Getting paid to sponsor products would make the pay better, but it’s tough to put out one quality video per week - but KZbin seems to preference 3 videos per week minimum to keep your channel relevant. Ultimately you have to decide if it’s worth it for you… I wish you all the best!

What I suggest is, use your tent as a studio, cooking your meals, filming the spectacular views travelling to different sites explaining the difficulty or the ease of reaching it and relating your thoughts. Yes your equipment reviews are brilliant, but no matter how good your kit is ..where do you go ???? and don't forget to take us with you. Live your dream and create a dream for others watching. I love your content and actively look out for one of your videos if I want a review on something. I remember you going full time in 2021 and some of the difficulties you had at the time. I can't believe it was so long ago now. It only seems a year ago. Some suggestions for different content: * Different styles of camping such as car camping, bicycle camping or motorcycle camping. You will need to talk to others and do research on some of those such as bicycle and motorcycle camping because I assume you don't have a motorcycle license yourself. But the needs someone on a motorbike has, for example, are a little different to hiking. Maybe interview some bicycle or motorcycle campers. * Interviewing others about their camping experiences, what they like and don't like, how they got started, why they chose the kit they use, etc. * How hiking and camping equipment has changed over recent years and the improvements made. Maybe look at some of the older stuff and discuss how it either changed camping significantly or was replaced by something that did. * Newer technologies such as portable solar charging and battery power banks. Applications such as osmaps and how to make the most of them. * Campsite reviews. Maybe interview campsite owners. Just a few suggestions to give you some content ideas. Keep going, you are a go to creator/vlogger for many of us.

Love it mate. Most people watch for you and your personality regardless of what’s going on in the video! 30 vids in 30 days seems like a good motivator!

I have a lot of respect for those outdoors channels than manage to smash out regular content. It aint easy. Unlike with other genres, the wildcamping/hiking etc content requires a lot more time and work. You've done well at the whole yt thing so give yourself a big pat on the back. I follow a lot of channels and am amazed at the number of vids that they put out. Chris in particular is doing 3 a week. Ok 1 of those is him stuffing his face😂 but it still takes time and dedication. And when you think of it , he's spending nearly a third of his life in a tent for our entertainment! That's mad!!! I don't have that level of commitment in me. But that said, I do enjoy getting out every now & then, having a laugh and sharing it with my small audience. I'm cool with that. Just remember that this is meant to be enjoyable, not a chore. Keep at it👍

I love the June challenge videos! I hope you stay authentic and keep up the variety. Most of us are not able to wild camp (back country for me in US). It is nice to see how intentionally getting outside can take many forms and it encourages me to do the same!

Paul, there's thousands of outdoors KZbinrs out there but you're one of the big ones because people like you. There's loads out there but I find most of the usual "extreme" trips boring. Your videos are down to earth and relatable. My mate and I often talk about how we'd like to see you take on whatever walk/hill we're doing. Sure, somebody out there will have a video but it's the personality that keeps us coming back. The economics might not be there but WHW and your other longer trips are my favourite style of videos and I'm always excited to see you take on Scotland. We're off to do our own WHW journey this weekend and in traditional Scottish style it's pouring down in Glasgow today, forecast for thunder and hail all weekend then rain the whole of next week. Hope to run into you on the hills some day.

I’ve found your challenge just as you’ve started the video-a-day challenge. I’m pretty sure I’ve learned more about you in a few weeks than the years of watching Andy/Kent Survival. Is that important? Well, it is to me, and I appreciate your candor, and look forward to whatever you decide to do next.

I'll stick around, been subscribed for a bit now. People don't realise how much effort goes into just the editing alone of these videos, just released my second real trail video (not monetised) takes me around three days just editing (videoproc vlogger editing software) not to mention the extra miles filming it (setting up camera, walking past, going back for it etc...) theres plenty of graft involved. So stick with it Paul, I'm sure me and my morning coffee can share a half hour with your latest video and like, and subscribe, and share, and remember to click the bell icon😅!!!

Hi,Paul! You’re a bright, sensitive guy with the heart at the right place. Whatever you do will be well done because you’re intelligent with an excellent memory. (Whatever your wife thinks…😊) your mind has expanded since your beginnings and you’re now more confident. I have a suggestion. On KZbin, start a paying hiking school. Find a way to make it possible with two camera operators and that road will show its direction. You’ll get tons of paying, voluntary participants I’m pretty sure..

I’ve been watching you for years now and enjoy listening to your point of view to be honest. I do find a lot of people are doing the same thing and watching someone boil some water is a bit boring. I run DofE at my school and am currently running an expedition on Exmoor. I completed my Hill and Moorland Leader award a few years ago and loved to watch videos about Dartmoor and other similar areas. Now that I’m working on my Mountain Leader award I love watching videos about people walking and exploring the Scottish mountains ( I have watched some of WHW videos). I live in Kent so getting to the mountains couldn’t be more challenging unfortunately! I’ve never tried to make any videos of my adventures because I hear how hard it is! Thanks for taking the time to share with us

Paul, you have a lot of good points. I think there is one thing you might have forgotten. Aside from the search stuff, some of us are faithful watchers of certain channels. It's very much like waiting for the next TV show episode to air in the days before binge watching and instant gratification. So instead of waiting to watch another episode of "the show about nothing," many of us want to watch the next "show about something I'd like to try." I look forward to the next video to drop from you, Andy, Simon, and a bunch of other creators. Many of the ones I watch aren't even outdoors channels, but regular go-to "must watch TV." As someone who will be dabbling in KZbin in the near future on other topics, I really appreciate the transparency and honesty of your journey. Thanks for the fun videos. Can't wait for your next one!

I’m enjoying these short videos Paul. A Messner Mini every day! How about some short hikes of say 5 miles or less with a lunch stop - my favourite video you ever did was the alcohol stove in a cup and you stopped on a bench to make a pasta mug shot or similar and a coffee. Sweet, simple, short. No huge miles staggering under a huge load - nice ‘n’ gentle 👍🏻

Hi mate, I suppose it is a double edge sword being a content creator. One side is naturally going to lean towards delivering content which trends/algorithms equals monitary return. Nobody can blame you for that as this is now your career. As you mentioned, this can be some what diluted when everyone is reviewing the same Olight torch. I'd love to see you do a retro wildcamp with retro gear, and getting back to the reason we all wildcamp. I reckon it would be a good watch. I will always support here in the background as I know, and appreciate you for being Paul Messner. 👍

“Not everyone’s cup of tea”, that might be true, but tea is very subjective! Some people like it strong, some like the bag to barely touch the wet stuff - in my opinion, you keep doing whatever you feel fit and comfortable to do, let the viewers decide whether they like ‘the taste of it’, you can’t make everyone happy, and tea making is way more complicated than most people think, especially if they’ve never tried to make a cuppa themselves! I hope I haven’t lost you in the analogy, hopefully you get my point, keep up the good work 👍💪👏
