I know, right? The KZbinrs are producing better content, we can watch in our homes, and we pay what we want or can through their Patreon, knowing that money is going to fund the next video custom-tailored to our preferences. It's such a ridiculously better system I'm even wondering why we still bother to have movie theaters.

The same thing happened with Charlton Heston in the 80s and 90s. Heston was the archetype for Indy as his 1950s archeology film was the costume and behavior of Indy. Heston played historic epic heroes in his 20s and 30s. Then he went on to dystopia SciFi in his 40s and 50s. Then there was that awkward time where he was playing young strong men aging out. Those movies were bombs. Then he finished his career with guest cameos doing serious Shakespeare or Long John Silver...those were great. Sean Connery likewise. Ford made mistakes by coming back for Lucasfilm when he was too old. He was doing OK with intimate older roles in realistic movies.

Never had nostalgia for this series since crystal skull was my first Jones adventure. Saw the original movies piecemeal on cable tv over the years until college. Eventually I understood it for what it was, the ultimate adventure serial. I really don't think Disney understood that. Part of the appeal of the original movies was that they were dark, violent, scary and funny films you could watch as a kid. Jaws and Bond were the same in that they appealed to adults and kids alike. @Megamyndir exactly. Indy always took (and gave) a beating. An 80 year old man can't. The central problem with the movie is really that it's not Indiana Jones. Indy is now old, alone, broken, bitter, an alcoholic, apathetic, resigned, and giving up on life. He gets dragged around, rescued, and bested all by a smug, arrogant, infallible new character that's clearly meant to replace him. It's the same Kathleen Kennedy move that they did with Rey and Luke Skywalker.

In the years since the introduction of Indiana Jones, we've seen the rise (and too some extents, the fall) of both Lara Croft of Tomb Raider and Nathan Drake of Uncharted. This was a perfect review and, as someone else has pointed out, very respectful and able to criticize without insulting or mocking the people involved. To answer Mark's questions: I had (and have) zero interest in this movie, just like I had zero interest in the one before. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is pretty much a perfect film and there was no need for any sequels whatsoever but, as many people have stated here, at least they could have stopped at the third movie and it would still have been a near perfect trilogy (even though the second one is the weakest in comparison). This had moneygrab written all over it and it needlessly destroys the Indiana Jones heritage. I saw the first movie at 13 on opening day (which was October 9, 1981 in my country) and it was an event for the ages. I went with my siblings and cousins and to this day we all still cherish that memory and remember the excitement like it was yesterday. A packed theatre enjoying every minute of pure adventure topped by that rousing, unforgettable score and everyone on their feet cheering and clapping at the end. At that time sequels and franchises were a rare thing, so I'm glad we were able to enjoy the magic without even having to worry it would one day end up in such a sad, almost undignified way.

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely and wholesome anecdote. It's sad to see how the industry has become so soulless, and that the days of the 'event movie' like Raiders has been and gone. It's that nostalgia and entertainment at its pinnacle that has been lost and has never properly been restored. I think it somehow makes the original films even more valuable and iconic when compared with these disposable imitations, so I guess that is one thing to take solace in. Biggest difference from this one and Maverick it's that Maverick is truly a Maverick movie and it respects the previous movie and the character itself, also the other characters add to the plot; while Indiana Jones is a side character in his own movie and they do everything to make Waller-Bridge likeable but in the wrong way. You can easily make a comparison between her character and Rooster. Rooster has time to be developed and to make the audience like him with his mistakes and how it affects him, while Waller-Bridge is good at everything and if feels like she doesn'r even need Indiana Jones to be at her side. The first RAIDERS was the best and my favorite. Adventure, suspense, humor, romance, and the best female character. The next two were good but didn’t measure up - probably because the emotional stakes couldn’t compare to the first film because Indy obviously loved Marion. A classic match. Love Karen Allen.

Disney had for a while a strategic approach of spending more money on single event movies to ensure being the top dog. While this ballooning of budgets would reduce profitability at the box office, their play was more one of „but we actually sell IPs through parks, merchandise and streaming, so ensuring that we and nobody else dominates the market, brings us the big bucks at the end“. Imo an ok strategy IF you manage to hit the zeitgeist and actually reap the park, merchandise and streaming benefits. But right now, their movies have lost so much attention that I can’t imagine them still pulling in those benefits in enough high numbers.

The budget on the film, that nobody actually knows, that all seems to be I heard from someone who heard from someone. But then again they also seem to ignore that there were alot of problems in making the movie like; Harrison Ford separated his shoulder early on, costing them alot of time. There being this little thing called a Global Pandemic that shut down everything, protip: the majority of the planet actually took it seriously which started and stopped filming several times. They also ignore all of the tax incentives, breaks etc. flat out rebates and 100% the marketing being being a tax write off. Then again that is also the same thing for 100% of movies.....If Dial of Destiny is a flop even though in 2 weeks its made over 300 million, than Mission Impossible having only made 80 million in 5 days is also a flop. So I guess we better get on the 100 videos about Mission Impossible being a box office bomb. Its hilarious though how certain "special" people were trying to call Dial of Destiny a bomb when it had barely been out for 48 hrs.

@@lutherheggs451 Tell me, when you compare Indy 5 with Mission Impossible, why do you use the total global one for Indy 5, but only the domestic one for Mission Impossible? Indy 5 did globally slightly over 300 over 3 weekends , but globally Mission Impossible did over 230 over 1 weekend. So if you compare them, please compare the same box office number, don’t just make roughly 150 million disappear on the movie you don’t like. PS: Everybody is using the budgets as reported by the press, same for every f-ing movie released for years. Don’t try to spin this into something special for Indy 5.

The originals worked so well for many reasons but probably because, for the most part, every location they went to was real. Everything felt gritty and legitimately real. In Dial of Destiny NOTHING felt gritty and every location might as well have been an obvious green screen soundstage somewhere. They did go on location to shoot, but the CGi and cinematography spoiled them for me, so I didn't care 🤷‍♂️ Also, id have preferred it if it was just Indiana Jones on a solo adventure and not dragging someone else along. Her character didn't do it for me at all and could have been deleted entirely and the film would have been a lot better for it 🤷‍♂️

I would take Daniel Craig as James Bond, as a template. New actor, got a lot of flak for not being Bond-like enough, but all that vanished with the first movie. Craig was a Bond reboot. They could have done the same with Indy. All it needs is keeping the character and themes close enough to the original - no radical overhauls. Of course, Bond kind of went off the deep end a few movies later, but any flaws they had were not a fault of the lead actor.

@@lutherheggs451 You are aware that the studio only gets about 50% of the box office? Plus the budget never includes marketing (another 100+ million) or any other costs from re-shoots etc? To be profitable at the box office, it would need over 800 million, which it will not make. Granted, later rental, streaming and tv sales may potentially carry it into the profit zone. Covid certainly put the last nail in the coffin but they were going down before that even. We are headed to a massive change in the way movies are released. Streaming maybe but we will also see a change in how they are made... these $500M budgeted movies are probably going to recede in importance. For as much as I don’t remember liking Crystal Skull, that still felt like it had something necessary left for Indy to achieve: finally settling down, becoming a father, understanding he’s got to hang it up eventually. It still felt like a springboard from the trilogy after so many years (like it almost felt slightly necessary to exist and like we could go for another adventure without feeling forced). This movie was probably one of the most blatant examples of making something for the sake of making something I’ve ever seen (at least Star Wars had life in it at the beginning with The Force Awakens imo). It felt so apparent that this wasn’t a movie made to say something more about this iconic character, which is so disappointing considering James Mangold is such a talented director, but something tells me it’s not his fault.

That said, even though Harrison Ford felt tired in it, I didn't hate the movie. There was enough meat left that I was at least happy Indy got a happy ending. This? Even if I had a Disney+ membership, I'd pirate it just so they don't get ad revenue instead of watching on their site. If this had just been a short role for Ford to "Pass the Hat" to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, I'd be fine with that. I love a good pulpy adventure story, with or without Indy. They turned Fett into a joke and make Vader so much more weaker in Jedi then he was in Empire... and they even repeat the idea of the Death Star, only this time they have to fly inside it.

Its genuinely not as bad as I thought it would have been. I really enjoyed Harrison Ford's performance.

I couldn't care less for this fanfic cashgrab. Last Crusade was the canonical end in my mind. The rest are fan films. BTW, that credit song on this video. Love it. ❤

Im a pretty big Jones fanatic. I think I watched the first 3 10000 times as a kid. And I had no idea this movie was coming out until it hit the box office lol..

When I see a 80 year old doing stunts, I don't think "hell, yeah!", but "shame, hope you don't break a hip". Trotting Harrison Ford out in an action adventure lacks dignity.

If I have to describe Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in one word then it would be: *soulless*

I saw the movie last week and going into it, I had the impression that Indy didn't do anything worth noting in terms of the big mystery of the dial but he did solve a few pieces of the puzzle. It's still a mid movie and I didn't see the last one so that may be a reason why I enjoyed certain parts like the ending but yeah, it's just another movie that isn't needed in a franchise because Hollywood is running out of ideas while movies like Sound of Freedom are catching people's attention. Also, that comparison to Han's story in Star Wars caught me off guard with how copied and pasted it was.

There's no rush to go out and see movies when it seems like if you wait a month everything will be available in some streaming format for $6 or even free.

Without adjusting for inflation, this movie cost more to make than the entire original trilogy combined...and that even includes the fourth movie if upper estimates are to be considered. Hell, this movie cost more to make than what the first Indiana Jones made at the box office. No wonder they're losing money with such a morbidly unsustainable business model. James Cameron was right on the money when he said that with the amount Avatar 2 needed to make to be considered profitable, it's not worth making movies on such monstrously high budgets.

When phoebe waller bridge was added alot of people assumed this was going to be a "woke" movie. I remember a few early reviewers saying that she came off as the hero and a baby sitter to Ford instead of him being the hero. I think these things, true or not, kept a lot of people away

I haven't seen this movie and probably won't but I really hope these visual effect artists got paid nicely and moved on to better projects.
