I remember one year every Friday during lent when I was younger my family would get fried fish from a local fish market and we’d all watch the new Fred episode together while we ate. It became a core memory.

Eating fish during lent originates from the medieval times, I recently learned that! They wanted to keep revenue for the fisheries. So interesting to see how it developed overtime.

​@@hotcheetosgirl08 Lent itself has its origins in the early 4th century, around the same time as the council of Nicaea, which was on the question of exactly what Jesus' relationship to God was and if he had always existed like God or if he had an actual beginnin (essentially this is about the whole idea of the holy trinity) and also decided when easter shud be At that early stage Lent was almost entirely about avoidin certain foods durin that time period leadin up to Easter. And even back then the foods that were told to be avoided were "animal products", prty mucu the same as today, except that nowadays theres the fish exception which started to crop up durin the medieval period as mentioned above, around the 14th century or so

Oh my gosh!!! LOVE this video. I too grew up as Catholic, so know all of what you talk about. I still don't eat meat on Fridays during lent. Actually, when I was growing up you did not eat meat on any Friday and then one year, voila it changed to just during Lent. However, my parents never stopped every Friday obligation. My dad actually is a KC (Knights of Columbus) and they are the ones who put on the Friday fish fry at our church during lent. It is all hand breaded (not frozen lol) at least at our church. They do not have French fries however, they have baby red potatoes, coleslaw and a slice of rye bread. Can you tell where I am from????!!! lol. Wisconsin. (yes, a fellow Midwesterner). Wisconsin traditional Fish Fry (at least in the Green Bay area where I am from) used to also include a slice of raw onion. Never understood that part, but my parents' generation love it to this day. My dad is 86 years old and still does the fish fry during lent and then they make homemade Booyah during the summer. (Another Catholic church staple here in Wisconsin) If you two ever want to take a road trip to Wisconsin to do a video on Booyah, let me know lol!

It changed because of health reasons. Every Catholic is still supposed to abstain from meat every Friday of the year unless they are pregnant or have another health related reason in which case they are still obligated to keep some sort of fast but it doesn't have to be meat related. It can be abstaining from social media or abstaining from a favorite food or activity.

Unfortunately many Catholics in US have lost the faith or misinterpreted to mean they don't have to abstain at all. I also abstain on every Wednesday, I didn't know the orthodox abstain from dairy.
