Hey, Busy Works! I absolutely love what you said about mixing on a laptop with Apple earbuds. I've worked in radio for over a decade now and I'm our station's Production Director. When I'm making elements for the air, most of the time I'm working on a laptop with my headphones on. Do I have a dedicated and sound-treated studio at my disposal? Yup! But honestly my workflow is more efficient when keeping it simple. Also how your average listener (in radio or music production) is going to listen to what you're making is important to keep in mind (as you said). Random tip for anyone reading this: something that helps me with my mixing too is to take my headphones off, turn the speakers toward me, and monitor the blend that way. I think it can help you not get distracted by the richness of the sound and focus on making sure the music and voice blend well.

Who said producers need analog equipment to produce? Analog equipment is primarily used for recording, mixing, and mastering. The main focus for producers should be their skill set. Analog can indeed help improve the sonic feel of a record, but it's not necessary. You're right. Most people listen to music on low-budget systems, and the average music consumer can't hear what an analog chain is doing, but I guarantee they can feel it. Mediocre people aren't willing to go the full distance, let alone an extra mile. A 30% improvement in song quality-do you know how significant that is? It's enough to turn a good record into a great one. To those serious aspiring mixing engineers and producers , even if you can't afford it now, this is definitely a worthy investment. Improve your gear, get your room treated-it will certainly help. Strive for the very best or settle for nothing less. Again not needed but don't completely dissmiss it when it cant be the right thing for you.

isn't the very best a very subjective thing? i only see tutorials about technical aspects. music advances only by doing things other say you cant do. i only have to name the tb-303 and how that was picked up. even the development of electronic music.

bro you COOKED the whole time. for one, everybody go listen to some japanese jazz and jazz fusion, its some fire. for two, its funny hearing you talk about how much people can hear thru the average earbuds. i recently got whats probably my nicest pair and i can hear so much more depth, i can literally hear sounds that i couldn't hear before, some songs i've heard dozens of times almost sound like remixes or like the version i was hearing on my old earbuds was a demo, something like a reference beat 🤣. wicked dope podcast man, would love more of these.

i do not agree with your argument that the only way you got to know music was through mtv etc. In the 90s most of the electronic music i was listening to wasnt on the radio, nor on tv, sometimes in magazines. The record store, thats where i got to know a lot of underground music. Also buying dj mixes on cd, through that i got to know another whole range of tracks. Ive always been on the search for music, i dont have spotfiy or anything. In production, im making music on hardware and in an ideal situation i would like to run it through a tape machine, ive got an analog mixer, and driving things with gain turning up, you first get a sort of saturation which then slowly goes into distortion. If a track needs some shiny edge, i take a room reverb on my mixer, turn everything down, and push the fx fader a bit up. It gives a certain shine to the track, so then im using the mixer as an instrument. Im looking for old tascam portastudios which record on cassette to run tracks through. Eventually it needs to enter the digital realm, where i use some effects in ableton. So its a bit hybrid. But i like recording methods from the 50s till the 00s very much. I find it very strange to see pictures of famous artists in a big studio, with a big Neve or SSL series console, and only a laptop. Why dont they run the laptop thru that big ass mixer? That would have been nice. In the 90s i had a few synths and a mixer, and recorded on cassette. I still like that way of making music. Technical developments are not worse nor are they better. Its a very subjective thing. That would like disqualify all the tracks that have been made in the past.

To be fair the cost of a laptop a controller and some headphones then the appropriate daw is a lot for a beginner when an mpc live 2 will give you more for less money if you are writing beats, I’m actually shocked you recommend people using ear buds too they are very damaging and tiring to the ears over long periods when a pair of dt 990 pros are around £100, again the MPC has built in speakers, then there’s the prospect of having to spend a lot of time tweaking windows to be a usable workhorse for production without it self updating throwing the entire system off point regularly which isso annoying. If I were to start from scratch again I would either buy an iPad and headphones or an MPC Live 2, good points good video thanks.

the reality is that to start off the equipment is a waste of money. anything outside of the computer and daw is accessories. you have to go thru that first stage learning after you learn then you can start upgrading your gear and make the moves of acquiring what you need with the proper understanding but in all honesty you can do everything with fl studio native lug ins you just need the knowledge the problem is the knowledge gaps just make you a consuming machine who will spend $10k before you make $200

22:00 I love this Talk.. The gate keepers fed us Music but there was so many who sounded like Michael Jackson or had that sound. Same Synths & Same Drum machines etc.. 80's 90's sounds.. but the Gate keepers MTV etc they promoted what was popular & people followed and ate that.. Today on Spotify the same thing happens, Record companies Pump the streams etc making people think them artists are the ones.. but it's funny that when you promote yourself? your music may get removed by Spotify for artificial streaming.. like a Mafia.. But i do laugh when i see pictures of producers in huge studios today with mixing desks and as you well said it's all in the laptop.. external gear has microchips programmed and inside the VST & laptop the emulator is exact.. So much BS is around like external gear is better? anything sounds good if you mix it well...

Great, great points. What’s the point of picking equipment that costs thousands for perhaps a 2-3% improvement in sound when the only people who *may* notice the difference are world-class engineers, the people who aren’t hearing your music? That said, I hated my acoustic guitar recordings until I put a Neumann TLM-102 in front of a Martin HD-28.

I dunno man, I think half hour videos about "the biggest lie about X in music production" might themselves be becoming something close the biggest lie about music production. Think what tunes you could have just made on fruity loops or Ableton with this time right now, if you hadn't watched this. 36 minutes, thats so precious for what little is contained in this, too many people are tricking themselves that theyre helping their art by watching this sort of content but they're not, there's just mountains of it some of it is hugely helpful, alot of it is just procrastination. This video is free and I'm not owed anything by anyone, but this is not quality content.

I been making beats for 16 (give or take 1) years, you can’t out work your limitations. The industry is a huge social game, who you know and who fucks with you. Most of these opinions people make videos about are important to have knowledge of because imagine you walk into a room with some heavy hitters that think like this and you start running your mouth about equipment matters and piss them off. Boom you just lost a placement, not cuz you didn’t make good shit, but cuz you didn’t know people out there felt like this. Im no big superstar, I’ve got my small successes here and there, but I succeeded on my ability to be a decent person before I succeeded on my actual skill behind the midi board
@riffmason5 ай бұрын
@@itsmrcaine854 I think you might have missed what I was getting at which would be fair since I don't think I expressed it well in my initial comment. There's absolutely mountains of music production related content stretching fairly straight forward observations into flimsy justifications for extremely long low calorie videos which are much more useful for the content creators trying to boost the celebrity profile of their channel than actually giving newer producers the actual help they need. For the record, the idea that equipment especially matters is a lie, but it's certainly a much smaller lie than the bigger lies being pushed by many of the various music production channels using low calorie content as a hook to try and get people who don't know much better to sign up for various paid for music related services.

@@riffmason yeah I agree to a point, and it’s up to each person on who they feel like is giving valuable info for sure. I’ve been around about as long as BusyWorks has been making videos, while I personally never used his tutorials I can honestly say I think busy works is likely one of the few guys that actually will give solid advice. There’s many of them out there though. Usually they’re struggling audio engineers or younger beatmakers that haven’t had enough time in the industry. Busy Works did kinda meander around the topic but this dude is a certified legend for a reason.

@@riffmason his whole point was a lot of guys focus on buying gear and having hardware, but in the end it’s not going to help quite as much as you hoped. I have a few pieces of equipment I’ve bought and I barely touch them except when I want to fool around with something. But I’m using my VSTs every single day. I don’t think this video is a waste of content per se. He just kept drifting off his point and coming back. It’s more like a rant than an informational video.

hiphop doesn't need to grow, it has grown hence why you mentioned others using our culture, that's not a bad thing. just know that it isn't authentic. cant use someone Elses authentic culture and expect to be "praised" or not be talked about "for the people who do talk down on others using our culture" I personally don't care. other cultures using our cultural sound and expecting to be treated and looked at like "a star or authentic" is like you buying a Jackie Robinson jersey from LIDS and trying to take it to a pawn shop and get top dollar, they would at most give you 10$ vs the real thing costing 4.2million. and about analog gear, stop telling people to not get this that and the 3rd, just tell people if you want to get all of this stuff look long term into adding things to your studio. and lastly you state "we thought soul was this American phenomenon" "WITCH IT WAS" "AND STOP TRYING TO CHANGE HISTORY "then you go on to speak as if other cultures outside of the USA was doing it as well at the same time, NO the USA created the sound and other cultures outside caught wind and copied, and you claiming "it was sometimes better" is purely subjective
