It's simple. There are only 3 PSA 9 Star 101 Jordans. 2 are held by one person, and the 3rd was "available". Someone with "F-You" Money wanted the best of the earliest licensed MJ RC.

I bought my high grade 3rd year '86 Fleer Jordan for $245 in 1990 (still ungraded) and my BGS 8.0 '84 Star Jordan RC in 2012 for $1600.

@80sStarBasketball4 ай бұрын
Its actually pretty simple Brian for the 1984 Star. Did you see Geoff Wilsons recap of this sale? All 3 agree the card is a Jordan Rookie and the pack pulled argument is weak. I think you underestimated PSA grading these cards, Beckett backtracking with its October 2022 issue and all the social media folks coming out recently declaring the Star card as the true rookie card. If you look at it like everyone is looking at it it becomes very simple to see the data and price increase. The 1986 Fleer jordan is a 3rd year card. The 1984 Star price has been repressed with bad information. That has changed... little surprising after 40 years but its amazing what correct information can do.

Well, it goes without saying that I completely disagree with everything you’ve said, and nothing you have said would explain a card increasing by more than 2X in a declining market. The issue has nothing to do with Star vs fleer, it has to do with $444 vs $925. And just a helpful tip, I would never quote anything Geoff Wilson says about cards to support an argument.
@Ryan-yh3zw4 ай бұрын
Geoff Wilson spent big money on the card so of course he is going to pump it up on his social media. Judging by your name and channel, I can see why you seem invested in this as well. We've seen this kind of pump before...
@80sStarBasketball4 ай бұрын
@@Ryan-yh3zw you assume alot. I owned an 86 fleer jordan 9 months ago and sold for the very reason I stated above. Bought a 101 and started my channel only 5 months ago. I grew up with fleer and all I had in my childhood. If I had an emotional bias...it would be fleer.
@cajuncardboard4 ай бұрын
What pump? lol. I have 2 options. I choose the 86 fleer. I’ll own a high grade star 101 very shortly. Thats not a pump that’s a 50/50 choice as to what card you think is the rc. And to reiterate what I said it’s not about which one is the rookie card it’s about why did a card increase by 2X and a declining market? It’s the same exact card. lol.
@cajuncardboard4 ай бұрын
I assumed nothing. What the rc is or isn’t has no bearing on a card increasing by half a million dollars from one sale to the next. 🤷🏻♂️ if an 86 fleer psa 10 sells for $525k I’d have the exact same option. That it’s illogical and just plain stupid and inorganic.

Regarding the PSA 9 101 selling for $925k. It's not that surprising given the 101 market lately. We're seeing PSA 7 values for example increasing 50% or more from a few months ago being that the average PSA 7 was selling for 20k and the last couple months have been selling for 30k at least. The one on PWCC weekly is already at 33k with 2 days left. 101's are up across the board by a large margin. BGS 8.5's typically going for 26k-32 have gone for mid 40's recently. BGS 8s that averaged 18k-20k a few months ago are going between 24k-28k now. The previous sale of that PSA 9 went for 444k 2 years ago was available only after a couple of months into PSA grading them again so it sold for a conservative amount since we all assumed there would be a few more. We've only seen 2 others since then, and their owner is not letting them go for a long while, so we should consider that. When it's all said and done in a few years, we'll be looking back thinking the buyer got a steal of a deal. You review a lot of cards so i don’t fault you for not seeing this new trend but i love your content. Keep up the magnificent work.

Well, my friend I think we’re gonna just have to disagree on this one. If a PSA nine star 101 sells for more than $925,000 while I’m alive on planet earth I will be very surprised. But there’s a sucker born every minute so you never know. I’ll take 3 pmg reds for my $925k instead. 😱😱😱
@HighSpeedCardChase504 ай бұрын
The first PSA 9 was given out a month after they started grading Star cards, and it was immediately sent to auction. At the time, the market didn't appreciate how tough of a grade that was for a #101 card. People thought it was going to be easy to get a 9 since the first one was given out so quickly. But PSA has now been grading Star cards for two years and they've still only given out three 9's in total. The market is now realizing that a PSA 9 grade on that card is significantly tougher to get than expected... and it makes sense that it's now worth significantly more money as a result...
@cajuncardboard4 ай бұрын
I agree with 99% of what you said but it doesn’t make it a $925,000 card my friend. And I say that with all due respect because you are a far more astute collector than me and you definitely know your stuff. Everything you said is true but the logical result of your observations doesn’t lead one to a $925,000 value.

That one Jordan choice reserved isn’t the “premiere” numbered version which is more rare.
@AnthonyColda4 ай бұрын
Looks like the STAR 101 had a better middleman negotiating the deal to get double what it was purchased at auction 2 years ago. Id also suggest with a pop of only 3 and none higher helped a quite a bit in the reasoning. With the other 2 held by one collector.

The price makes sense if that is what someone wants. People are forgetting anyone with a PSA 9 doesn't need the money so the price makes sense to even consider it. If we look at what other cards go for how is this price surprising? Whomever bought it doesn't care about the 925k- they wanted the card. This person didn't give their life savings for this card it had to be chump change. I am not into Star cards but if it was a PMG Green would you pay what it takes for 1 of 3? I would and many others would if they could find someone to let it go.

Cards that can be cornered whether by low pop grade or low pop serial numbered stuff is the target of world class manipulation. They did the same with PMGs a few years ago and now the same is happening to high grade low pop Star 101s. I will say although the pop on PSA 9 Star has "tripled" from pop 1 to pop 3 it's not like a pop 100 to pop 300 triple of pop. I think the sale is exorbitant however I do not think we will see a pop of 20 PSA 9s in the next 10 years. And rhetorically speaking pop 20 is still less than 10% of the 86 Fleer PSA 10. People never seem to acknowledge that. Hence why the new record sale is so staggering. A pop 3 Jordan is still very very very rare

Finally collectors are respecting and acknowledging Star cards. They had the license in 84. 101 is the true rookie card. It doesn’t matter how they sold it. Early baseball cards came with tabacco.
@cajuncardboard3 ай бұрын
It does matter how they were packaged and distributed unfortunately. Tobacco cards weren’t sold regionally only and they were randomized in packs not in team sets. It certainly does matter.

Well time will tell. Neither of us can dictate what the hobby will define as a rookie card. But it is undeniable that with psa grading Star and record prices for most Jordan Star cards that they are on the rise.

It's a coordinated scam. A few famous card collectors bought the card and then they talked it up like crazy on their KZbin channels and social media accounts in hopes of driving the price up.
