The Biggest Mistake I've Made on the Mazda RX7...

Another 40 steps closer to getting the Mazda Rx7 Running again! So I made a big mistake when I put this 13B together... With the Turblown Studs, we were supposed to add sealant on the sealing washers on the back of the engine... I did not do that. So we have to pull out the Transmission, Pull each nut one at a time, and re-seal all of them...

As much as I like my Subies I have to admit that this RX-7 is becoming one of my most favorite builds that I've seen on Smeedia. We had a Nissan Z31 turbo with T-Tops back in the day but I always wanted to try out the #1 competitor to the Z31. Almost purchased an FC twin turbo but the guy still had a lean on the title(this was early 90's) and I was only 16, so that was a no good situation.

Welding a 90 on the compressor housing might clean things up a bit and be less restrictive than 120deg coupler

I've debated it, I've seen a handful of videos saying not to do it as it puts stress on the compressor housing and can lead to it cracking. I'm not 100% sure on the validity of that though

You should see the even bigger hole in my valve cover gasket on my 05 STI than before I decided "I should replace this just cause it's getting to 100k miles. How hard could it be!?" 2 months later of replacing more and more and more parts and thousands of dollars in and it's just like pouring oil right onto the floor instead. Oh and don't forget the valve cover bolt I sheered in the head. Tow truck comes in 30 minutes. What would have been $600 to have professionally done now requires my engine to be pulled plust a good $1k - $3k of work. Nice!

12:10 ah dude! That’s because you mounted in Intercooler upside down. Lol, jk. Only way to have the comp housing pointing downwards would be to redo the inlet part of the intercooler. But we’re not doing that. Full send!

OK, some bad news for you. There is no pilot bearing seal. I had to frame-by-frame it at 8:06 to see for sure. Without that the grease for the pilot bearing will go everywhere and it will fail in short order. Atkins will have them. Also don't know if you checked the pilot bearing that is in there or not - if it's in good shape, clean it, grease it up, and let it go. It requires a special tool to remove it. The seal you can easily install yourself with a correct sized socket. But you have to pull everything back apart :(

Nice work!!! Quality parts for a Fd are expensive. You will see in the long run thay those parts are neccessary and in the long run save money. Those parts keep the motor happy which equals reliabilty Brap brother

Get a cast 90 elbow. You will need to cut the compressor housing shorter and weld that cast 90 to it and clock the turbo a little more to get a smoother bend in that hot pipe to match the outlet.

Borg Warner makes a 90 degree compressor cover. Could work well here!

I think you just wanted to do another video, thats why you didn't do the sealant on the first run ;) . We actually recently started printing those instructions out with the shipments. Any RTV that is coolant compatible works FYI. P.S. We are getting you of the first 10 UIMs ( ahead of the production run) so you can progress along !

For the intercooler piping from the turbo, have you thought about moving the intake into the intercooler from coming off the top of it, and clocking it 90 degrees to the left so you feed it from under the air filter? I know it would be a pain in the ass to weld but then you could clock the turbo lower outlet lower and have more room to work.

Can you move the intake lower? If you can get that filter lower in the v-mount area that would make room for the turbo hot side tubing.

Tig questions, when welding your bov flange on, what type filler rod did you use, what color tungsten do you use, what do you set your amps to? I have a friend's Lincoln Tig 200 and it will not Tig aluminum for sh*t! I'm not the best Tig welder but I know I'm not this bad. The material is clean, argon is set good, filler rod I got 2 kind I tried, tried 4 colors of tungsten I keep striking out. And I never get the right sound you get either, and yes it's set to ac.

I turn my amps all the way up and just use the foot pedal to control heat. For filler rod, I use 3/32. I'd have to look to see what specifically I have. I've been using the blue tip, but I've seen better results with grey

@@Smeedia first thank you for the reply man! And I will hop on the devils site and order the blue tungsten tonight. Far as the filler rods I got my choices are 4043, and 5356. For the amps that's sort of what I do but I got feet issues so for me it's easier at times to figure out the closest seeing if I can do I can just WOT that bitch and try to start stacking dimes. But that's usually done easier with steel not aluminum I'm finding out. Haven't welded alloy sense high school (2001) and that was using the schools really nice big Miller machine and over 20 years ago so I don't remember the settings and things weren't digital. Lol anyways thanks again for the help!
