What does a positive or negative delta really mean? Brannigan explains that when it comes to trading with the foorprint chart, there's a common misconception that a strong cumulative delta indicates positioning in a market. This is false.
There is only positioning when a strong net delta is complemented with price response. Without this type of price response a strong cumulative delta just means that there are more buyers lifting the offers or sellers hitting the bids.
Brannigan uses GBPUSD and German 10 Year Bund futures to show comparative instances of delta having increased with and without price response to analyse and understand the interactions between participants.

Am i correct? ... the point here is when we see a huge imbalance in Delta ... then we should notice how the price react with it ... chances are we might be in an absorbtion phase in which bigMoney might be taking their profit & just start loading their new orders ... so it price is not going to reverse right away? :)

Is it not simpler to only look at Delta to confirm or refute a breakout or fake out together with volume and open interest. It is an early predictor of breakout or fake out. The point is you look at price first then use Delta not the other way round.

Basically means longs covering shorts and vice Versa. Lots of factors in but like the man said it doesn’t mean buy or sell ... that would be too easy. Off course sometimes opportunities are there from what the data shows ..... it’s a great tool however.

limit order you might need to take your attention on DOM due to limit order might be pull, layering, spoofing and so on. In this case, bookmap can help.

I have never heard CD alone be a buy or sell indicator. CD is telling a story about the bids and offers that you can use to your advantage. This is why Delta Divergence is used because when delta is strong in one direction and price isn't moving you have an underlying convergence that is going to happen. Typically one side prevails and you get a large directional move. The key is being patient and wait for your signal to jump on the back of whoever wins and ride the wave.

Hi Fabrizzio. Thanks for the question. Here is the answer: every time someone tries to lift the offer (trading into the offer), new offer steps in. Let's say there is 10 contracts at both bid and offer on the closest price. If buyers trade into the offer and take that ten, they should move to the next offer price. But if someone immediately steps back in with additonal 10 at the same offer price, thats is called reloading the offer. That price is being defended. If you're an aggressive seller and you place a large enough order to match the bid price (at least the entire size of the bid quote), what happens next? ...Either that bid price level disappears (because those buy orders were matched and executed by your sell order) ...or buyers place _additional_ buy orders at that price level, ie, the bid is "reloaded"

Not to mention that Delta is not a delta as -3250 for example has 3250 Bids waiting to be taken, so a delta which is not a delta but a mere indication of who is more "aggressive" so not very useful on its own in my opinion and certainly not indeed a gage of net buying/selling

Your interpretation of 'net long' and 'net short' is interesting. Obviously there aren't more longs than shorts and vice versa, so how do you come up with the assumption that a market is 'net long'? My understanding is that there are an equal amount of buyers and sellers, and market direction is dictated by supply and demand.

I think he's describing other peoples' concept of "net long", not his own. As you both said, all trades match an equal quantity of buys and sells. However, net short/long can be meaningful for the distribution of position accumulation. If 100k contracts were traded between 5 distinct buyers and 300 distinct sellers, the concept of thinking of a few (large) market participants as "net long" could be helpful when identifying price levels that could prompt action for portfolios of some market participants.

A net long can be when say prices are rising higher, people who are long might tend to hold their positions whereas shorts might be getting in and getting stopped as the market moves higher. And the sell side liquidity might be coming in from existing buyers who want to sell and take profit.
