I don't think Chris did anything wrong here. It was a question Shen shouldn't have even asked. Even if Chris had just answered with "that's info, I don't want to say" Shen could reasonably assume that meant Chris likely already had it at that point.

Yeah I'm definitely on the side of Chris played it the way he should have. I can see how lying on a friendship level would kinda suck but honestly Chris displayed savvy gamesmanship there. Also Shen isn't exactly the most graceful when he's losing lmao

Absolutly with Chris here, shen shouldn't have asked the question. Every other answer than 'NO, i don't have it' would have been soo HUGE Info for shen. So yeah no other possibility. Also i think some missinformation here and therer more often in those races would spice the races up by a lot. As it was really fun seeing Shen overthink so much with beeing sure it has to be the next spot and the next spot and so on xD

To be fair.. shen asked specifically “how long have you had fly? 5 minutes or 10 minutes?” .. so they question wasn’t IF he had fly but for how long! which would have thrown me off too if I was Chris.. because… if he answered the question truthfully he would have to say “1hr and a half” .. I think if shen had just asked “have you found fly yet” Chris would have been able to come up with a better answer that didn’t give any info.. but because the question was so specific that’s why he lied because he was nervous about how to answer him

Reasons like this is why I always root for Chris in these races. Shen tried to get information and put Chris in a tough spot on what to answer. Lying or not, it’s on Shen anyway. Chris played it correctly.

Chris could not have told Shen he got fly. Shen often asks questions like this in races, it's just usually not relevant. Shen is also a little bit bitter when he loses.

You should return to your home, if I remember correctly. I believe it counts as a Pokemon Center, seeing how it is also the fly point.

i dont know if it has anything to do with it, but your key item list is not the same as shens. On the third row, between the bike and the map there is an item for shen that's not there for you, and he has 2 rods while you have 3

Shen has the map on, while Chrism doesn't Which is weird, because if I remember correctly, the Map isn't randomized in this. It is always given out by the old man and because of that you can skip that entire scene. So if I'm right, Shens list is definetly wrong

i like that shen is being kept in the dark about fly, but i don't like that you straight up lied to him by saying you don't have it. normally you guys seem to be gentlemanning honesty. you could've tried to get away with not answering or saying you've had it for a while in a way that sounds like not just now but also not too long ago. or just say "who said i have fly?" EDIT: glad shen points that out later too.. never lie.

Answering anything other than no is basically the same as saying yes... trying not to give away super important info and lying are completely different imo especially since you need all the strats you can get running against a mewtwo lol. In the end this is all for fun anyway, I'm sure Shen didn't mind too much and it made the run super entertaining to watch!

Also, shen could’ve been memeing. You never know. You never want to give info. The question shouldn’t have been asked. Pay attention to shens commentary around the 02:25:00 mark. He even implies “Chris lied but because he thought I was memeing” he knows it’s a dumb strat to ask that question anyways.

Lying or not: Shen missed a check and then, one week-ish later, missed the same check at GDQ and it again was an important item. Lesson here is definetly "don't skip Coin Case", especially since it is such an easy an early check to do.

I disagree. Shen put him in a tough place. It was wrong to ask the question in the first place. Like Shen said, he would've noticed he made a mistake earlier and gotten Fly earlier as he began thinking of what he missed sooner. Besides, white lies in a competition is just normal. I'd compare it to friendly poker (like for a piece of candy or nothing), being asked if you had the flush and being expected to not lie.

Naw. Remember Shen didn't ask if he had Fly, he asked how long he'd had it. Answering that honestly would've given way too much info. He'd had it for basically the entire time. Narrowing it down to the first quarter of the game. Chris came clean when Shen thought logic was messed up to keep him from getting overly frustrated. Shen shouldn't have asked such a question. He put Chris is a tough spot where he didn't have time to think it through. Thay said, I'm sure they're both over it and were the next day if not immediately. It wasn't scummy. It's a race. I swear the people who thought that was wrong would hate playing cards with my family lol. It's part of playing a game vs someone.
