What makes you think of summer? Trips to the beach? Baseball? How about grilling hot dogs at the park or by the pool? When done right, a grilled hot dog is hard to beat. But when they're done wrong? Not so great. And a lot can go wrong: Hot dogs can be overcooked, undercooked, encased in a subpar bun, topped poorly, or just plain low in quality.
So what can you do to make sure your hot dogs come out top-notch every time? Some of it comes before you ever crack your grill open. What you do at the grocery store or how you store them in the fridge plays a role, too. And please, get the heat right. Here are the biggest mistakes people make when grilling hot dogs.

Lots of good info. WHY did they stop making those U-shaped buns? They were great as the dogs nestled down inside and left lots of room for condiments. The "normal" buns aren't even cut right. Usually 1/3 and 2/3 where they break apart and don't support the dogs. They just suck! bring back the U-buns!!

You apply the oil to the grill grate while it's hot just after you brush it. It seals a coat around the bars of the grilling surface. If you do it before turning on the heat you'll never form that seal and season the grill.

So, why do people RAVE about ballpark hotdogs? And by that, I mean bought at an actual baseball game. I would think they'd buy the cheapest of the cheapest hotdogs...

If I grilled my wife’s bun, I’d end up with it (complete with dog) in closest uncovered orifice, probably ear.

3-6 minutes on the grill? I despise idiots who do that. Use a gas grill preheat then set to low heat all burners. Turn 60 seconds the first few times then let em cook turning every 2-3 minutes. I can cook a full pack of hot dogs done to my liking with the casing popping id say 30, 35 minutes
