Hazbin Hotel is the latest edition to the "Adult" Cartoon shelf, topping lists everywhere as #1 and dominating countless streaming services worldwide with its A-list cast and top-tier animation. Many people were surprised to find it so fun, colourful and... musical?
As one of the many new generation fans sucked into the phenomena that is this show, I prepare to share my experiences both watching and being within the show's fandom. This can only go well.

@@AskaKwestan​​⁠it is my understanding that Viv had wanted 15 episodes. Amazon didn’t want to take the risk, gave them 8. Hazbin has _always_ been a musical. Always. What is a shame is the characters they had to change (most notably Alastor and Husker). Where Husker went from being a fully begrudging, borderline mean, “grumpy” drunk, to whom he is now. And Alastor? His change is so jarring from the pilot I call canon “Alastor” Al. He’s lacking the spooky factor. Lacking the ruthlessness and willingness to scare the crap out of someone. Even his “this face was made for radio” line in the series, is _nothing_ compared to his half smothered “dear, if I wanted to hurt anyone here, _I would have done so already_ “ complete with a “behind the scenes of what Alastor _probably_ actually looks like the moment he drops the mask of affable gentleman and lets Charlie and Vaggie peak behind the curtain of who he is beyond the full form of the Radio Demon. Needless to say, it got changed from a horror/musical with comedy, to just a comedy/musical. To cut songs _in a musical_ with no reason other than “pacing” (there are some great takedowns by Musical Theater professionals dissecting the songs themselves and how they don’t serve the story the way songs in musicals should) is _not_ a proper critique and shows a fundamental misunderstand of the medium, what was done wrong, and how it can be fixed. Bad faith, uneducated, under-informed, snd completely not researched, take. And trust me this is not an attack. It’s merely A) a very annoyed writer who understands plot, has watch suits destroy IP (Cyberpunk 2077 anyone?), B) an _extremely_ annoyed historian who is annoyed by people with the same level of not-knowing Viv accidentally did (tech doesn’t evolve in a vacuum, and I have my own gripes with Hazbin surrounding that, but I recognize I am a Historian by training as well as a writer by _official_ training). And C) at least Viv made something, not sitting there like a huge chunk of the lukewarm to Hatedom who haven’t made a creative project in their lives and are only consumers. I’m not angry, just horrifically disappointed with everyone who has crawled out of the woodwork to tell us all how Hazbin sucks because… reasons? It’s one thing if it’s not to your taste. It’s another if points made don’t make any sense.

You jump around a little but I'll address the 2nd part of your comment. There was never a main point about cutting songs for pacing, it was a hypothetical and a possible outcome due to the cost of animation. As you've informed me a 12-16 ep season was denied perhaps due to this concern. Of course Hazbin is a musical and needs these songs, but the actual musical segments encompass not even 10% of the show's actual run time. I wanted to convey that the small 10% is what carries the show in many people's (and mine's) eyes disregarding the haughty hoo-hah of the big wigs who parade around saying X and Y. Your problems with characters and story themes seem more subjective. I never found HH to have horror themes personally, and Alastor to me is simply still Alastor. Thanks for the comment!

@@AskaKwestan I haven’t gone back to count the percentage of songs. But like most musicals, it’s more than 10% if I’m being harsh it’s 30%. I’ve seen plenty of musicals and love myself Theater. (Despite not being someone who physically cannot participate in them ((bad knees and back)).) Most musicals, the songs are what carry the plot, and while HH isn’t remotely _The Sound of Music_ it is closer (since it lost its entire half of its run time) to something like _Music Man_ where there is drama and each song exists to further the plot, same with _South Pacific_ . As for the Alastor issue, that is me doing two things: A) I watched the pilot, and in said pilot Alastor is _much_ more horror based. Other characters, including Charlie (in her song “Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow” where she shifts to her demonic form when not angry and instead for effect). The visuals of the rundown, half abandoned Hotel where its got a spooky vibe, even outside of the Hotel, where Angel’s has all 8 limbs out, Charlie being full demonic, Alastor (if you freeze at the right second he looks more undead-sallow skin, black stitching at the edges of his mouth, threatening tone, and then snapping back to seemingly cheerful and a demon who would do not wrong-while effected by his practice of New Orleans Voodoo which is a lie. (Also why his canon stitching is more prominent so it’s clear he’s got “issues.”) Heck, the horror aspect is hinted at before Alastor shows up with Vaggie and Angel entering the hotel as shadows with their eyes glowing before they become themselves. Not to mention a more horror themed Alastor is fully confident in his ability to con Charlie, and scare anyone who is looking before he tries to offer his first deal (his smile becomes twisted and his vèvès and red magic surround him, on to vanish she when she turns to face him. He also is regarded with distrust (minus Disney Princess in Hell in Charlie) by everyone. As for it being subjective… I understand you’re a Hazbin newbie, and I’m glad you’ve given Amazon the watch minutes so we get season two, but “A Day in the After Life” that follows Alastor very much shows how he is a horror character, and many of the other characters aside from Charlie, are as well, even if more muted than Alastor’s backstory as told by Vaggie (who is untrustworthy, but Husker isn’t .) Iirc the good aspect (disregarding the depressed king of Hell who I’d imagine is partially depressed because “their people are _terrible_ “ and not worthy or wanting to be saved. I spent three years studying writing, plays, fiction, horror, and on my free time studying the world H.P. Lovecraft, which is why I adore Murder Drones. Not to mention there is nothing subjective about Theater Majors/someone wanting to write a musical not doing the research where giving the Radio Demon power to rival Lu’s: because all wireless tech works off of radio, and no one on the team read Future Shock (or its sequel) that says rushing Hell into near modern day. We as humans can barely handle the invention of the iPhone. Imagine going from 1937/1940 to modern day and how hard that would be. Do I have subjective feelings about Al? Yes. Man shouldn’t be eating roadkill where the stag’s meat is starting to turn black. He’d a hunter. No need to stoop to that low. And yet. I have, from a literary view and as who specializes in historical fiction as well as dark fantasy, analyzed the difference between the pilot and canon characters. And not to get all “former physics major before pivoting” _all_ of really is subjective. It only becomes objective once observed. And can fall back into subjected reality the moment more than one is observing it. As a write I can see the flaws in most media. Just most media doesn’t have drastically different written stories between a prolog/pilot and the full story. An issue that one can blame a signal (or duo) author(s) but cannot blame a creator who is under the thumb of a huge corpo and Amazon not willing to take a risk. This isn’t as bad as some shows that only get one season and then get cut (Serenity comes to mind) as well as the suits at CDPR. As a writer, you get the sense that whatever Alastor is up to is a reflection of what he did as a human. Same with quick to violence Vaggie, amongst others (I would love to have a conversation with someone who has never seen the pilot or only saw once a long time ago. Your civility is appreciated, and so apologize for my aggression because even after a good video essay there is a boiling dislike have Hazbin that is hidden. :) this has been refreshing. Cheers!)

People always come up with reasons to complain. In Finland, delusional people imagine that Hazbin Hotel is Christian propaganda and its purpose is to convert and convince people to become Christians against their own will, because the theme of the series is to rehabilitated souls so that they can be purified and go to heaven. Of course, I understand that in Finnish discussion culture we have zero tolerance for religious topics because they only cause quarrels, fights and discord, but I would hope that the atmosphere could be that much healthier and freer, so that we could talk about shows, animations, series and films freely, whether they are religious or not. And my own reaction to their complaints so far is "What the hell people, it's just an Adult Swim cartoon. So, can you now calm down because no one has to watch it against their will if they don't want to." But Hazbi Hotel is a good and fun animation for adults (The most perfect and flawless? Nope.) and I recommend anyone to watch it if they want to, but no one is forced to do so.

I love how the show, I think, pretty explicitly states that even though Alastor _tries_ to put up a front of, "I don't actually care about anyone else's opinions of me," he _actually DOES_ care!! Of course, this is the case when looking at the surface of everything but if we do what the show really wants us to do and look at things a little deeper - 95% of the people on this list (i.e the main cast) don't seem like bad people. This video genuinely made me sob - I also share your thoughts regarding how hard it is to call yourself a HH fan, and the way the internet may perceive you because of it. I can’t exactly explain why, but Hazbin is such a comfort show for me (it’s probably the songs and cast), and some of the characters have really snuck into my heart. So it is really off putting to see so much hate thrown at people who just want to like the show and talk about. This was so cathartic to hear, and I salute you, sir.

It’s nice seeing a video about Hazbin that acknowledges the flaws, but still is overall positive. It bothers me that so many people just look at the flaws and immediately write the show off as bad because of them. I love this show and fully admit it’s not perfect. But all of the positive elements just far outweigh any negatives I could have with the show. One other criticism people make that bothers me is when they claim that the songs “add nothing to the story” which is just not true. Every song develops the plot in an effective way that I feel like dialogue just wouldn’t do.

It seems like the vast majority of hate this show gets just comes from people who saw that hating the show was popular, so they just jumped on that bandwagon without giving it a real chance. I’ve even seen some hate videos that are so evident that the person making it didn’t even watch the show. They just are echoing things that they read on the internet about it. And it’s so sad to see a good show like this that was obviously a labor of love from the creator that has so much amazing talent behind it just get crapped on relentlessly.

I think people have lost sight on what entertainment is supposed to accomplish. It gets me invested in characters, songs, plot (even if sometimes it can be a little weak or forgotten momentarily). It’s like if my little neurodivergent brain was puked up onto a plate and dyed with red pigment

I feel like the problem with being a hazbin hotel fan is the harassment hazbin fans tend to get on the internet. I don't see it much on other social medias, but it's CONSTANT on twitter. I genuinely think that if someone dislikes a show that they SHOULD be allowed to dislike it. However they have no right to shit on fans and call them bad people for liking it. Again, I'm just talking about what it's like on twitter. I know that some fans might go and attack those who don't like the show. That is not okay and the majority of the fandom doesn't think that's okay. But just because your experience with the show might not be positive,it does not give you the permission to shame those who enjoy the show. Let people have fun, the show itself is beautiful and silly. If it's not your cup of tea, thats fine! But let's just be respectful towards eachother.

And as Carmine stated the denizens weren't going to test theories about hurting angels while running for their 'lives'. And once Carmine noted Vaggie's flaws you realize how fearless she was while staying at the hotel.

@@Decembirth Except the reason that Vaggie was harmed was because of ANGELIC WEAPONRY, something that doesn't require an angel to wield to be effective. She should 100% know that angelic swords, spears, etc are capable of harming angels, and the fact that the show tries to excuse such a glaring plothole (and in the same breath point out how obvious the answer was and how it's stupid that no one has figured it out yet) just goes to show how the writers really didn't put much care into ironing out the mechanics of the world. BTW, this is all coming from someone who liked the show for what it was, but is able to point out just how incredibly flawed and confusing it is a lot of the time. It's a fine enough musical, which admittedly is what the show was going for, but it falls incredibly short at being a TV show that tells a cohesive narrative with worldbuilding and character actions that makes sense.

I don’t even like musicals, but I’m glad I gave this show a chance. I completely see your point about it being a musical is what makes it good. As a Star Wars prequels fan, a piece of media being imperfect is not gonna stop me from liking it. And yeah, the Hazbin fandom kind of scares me, but again…Star Wars. "Hazbin Hotel would not be good without its music" sounds like a very Drake Laptop thing to say but honestly? You're right there Even as someone who found the show entertaining and fun in its own way, I still had basic problems with it like: >the pacing (seriously what the concept of time here) >the dialogue (I know it, you know it, we ALL know it lol) >the exposition being clunky (the Charlie "daddy issues" thing made me eyeroll I won't lie) >the obvious story hiccups (The fact that Vaggie, someone who LOST AN EYE AND HER WINGS, did not know that angels could be harmed is genuinely stupid) >the fact it wants to have its cake and eat it to (Instead of working in the timespan they were given they decided to just say "I'M SENDING IT" and crammed seasons worth of characters and lore in the span of 1 episode. That's just stupid) The reason I'm able to suspend my disbelief somewhat is because the show is just plain fun when you turn your brain off and just go with the vibes. And music obviously helps with that; I have replayed Stayed Gone for over 3 days Maybe that's why the show has been doing so well despite its glaring flaws

Didn't expect to see a Kagerou Project mention within a video about Hazbin Hotel of all places but still incredibly cool to nonetheless see someone show appreciation to the series even without it being the focal point of the video itself. And the use of a Summertime Record instrumental for the final core section of the video was 10/10 in my opinion. I found video originally while searching "Kagerou Project" to find new covers to add to my playlists, but was honestly really intrigued to see this video pop up as a result. As someone who currently has half of the Hazbin Hotel songs on my Spotify liked playlist and has been actively singing along to some of them such as "Stayed Gone", I decided to give the video a shot and I'm glad I did because I feel like it hits a lot of good points. I see so many review videos of Hazbin Hotel complain about the pace of the series and admittedly I can see where it feels like that because it kind of does move along incredibly quickly story wise. But I am grateful to see such amazing talent within the show and be able to get so many great bops out of it. The moment I realized Lucifer's VA is the same person that voiced Varian from Tangled the Animated Series and Light Yagami from Death Note the musical my mind was honestly blown away because all I could think was how cool it was to see them be able to get that VA onto the show and to be able to hear him sing with another series I've listen to.

There are some plot holes that need to be fleshed out and the characters (for as much as I like them) need time to develop better. If they can do that, then I honestly think it would be so much better to watch for most people. With all that being said, this show has absolutely hooked me like no other series has. This is a huge W for both musicals and indie animation.

Hazbin Hotel reminds me of Cats. There's very little actual plot and the story is an excuse to have musical numbers that condense the characters into their 1 defining trait. You even have one of the main characters go to heaven in a hot air balloon (Grizabella/Sir Penitous). And a devious magic user trying to game the system to gain their freedom (McCavity/Alastor).

Amazing video! I love when people say their opinions without worrying about the fanbase! Sticking it to the man of sorts, the man being the fandom. My theory as to why Vaggie says no about angels being harm is that she's supressed the memory up until she saw Charlie's face. And with Charlie, she was so much happier that why would she try to remember? She remembers she's fallen and an angel, but being mutilated by Lute was psychologically blocked like trauma can be based on how much affect it had on her.

I absolutely feel this. Whenever a negative opinion arises online, there will be HUNDREDS of comments and replies that criticize the entire fanbase. I've seen people say the fanbase is worse than the show, the fans are all SA supporters, the fans are anti-Christian, all sort of kind-of-deranged comments that are VERY MUCH taking things too far. And this is all stuff I've seen on KZbin alone (I don't even want to say I like Hazbin on Twitter). This really frustrates me because it feels like most of the people who don't like it are more disrespectful to people who do than the other way around. Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but half the reason people don't like Hazbin Hotel is because it's like brainwashing people into thinking Christianity (a belief, like any other, that is not based on fact) is wrong or something random like that.

So many good points. I’ve been making analysis vids for this show mostly bc I am a theater person and…it’s fun and I have a good time watching it and media analysis is my thing, but the LINE between the haters and the staunch defenders…people actually blame the critics for not watching the pilot and therefore rating the show lower like…dude I like this show but it deserves the rating the critics gave. And it would be a disaster without the songs. The songs manage to progress the plot and character development at 10 times the speed (wow let’s wrap up Angel’s main storyline with one super banger of a number and I’m not complaining bc that would take so much frickin dialogue to cover what Keith Davids gave us in one song) because that’s just how musicals WORK. Just…oh god it would be so bad without the songs. But yeah how dare you like it because…problematic or whatever?? Christ just let me enjoy a fun thing that I can admire for staying true to their original vision and actually experimenting with adult animation on a big streaming platform with the Broadway style and the animation and the themes they tried to cover. Also it’s like the animation of my childhood got beefed up with amazing singers and learned how to swear so nostalgia factor. You are right. Hazbin Hotel is great for it's songs, because it's at the end of the day a musical. And songs can expose plot points and character dynamics in ways story telling cannot. Anyone that understands song and music are quick to praise those parts, just like you are praising the animation. Both together make for quite the impression. And I believe the show was pretty good! The best I have seen as a fact. Focusing on the problems is ignoring the vast boring and lame landscape on which it rises. There are just so many productions with no soul on the west and then there is this huge monstrosity of a show. And I freaking loved it.

I generally dislike musicals because they usually stop the story and sing for minutes straight the same one sentence that might be lore but it's the same one thing for 3 minutes of them standing in one place, sometimes I can't even understand what they're saying, because it's that Opera genre where they all sing in one "scream" (also I generally don't care about music, I just hear it, don't even search it unless I like the rythm) But in Hazbin it's actually really fun to watch and follow the songs because they lore dump you every sentence they say, the story progresses and they do stuff while they're singing ex: Happy Day In Hell is basically Charlie going from the Hotel to the Heaven embassy while she shows us the daily life of the sinners and hell itself and she tells us about her dream of changing the status quo with her hotel redeption plan, how sinners find her annoying and don't respect her higher rank because she's just "Lucifer's delusional daughter" and no one cares about her or believes on what she's trying to do. Let's not talk about You Didn't Know, because during that 3 minute song an immense amount of stuff happens and is revealed 😂

Too many characters, the cast feels like the league of legends roster. I know vivzie loves designing characters but some of them needed to be left on the cutting room floor. It's crazy because the fact it IS a musical is why my enjoyment of the show is unfortunately soured. And not because of the songs itself- they're are catchy and impactful, and I honestly want to go rewatch them after this. But...the fact they're randomly in there is my problem. I didn't expect it to be a musical at all, but when the first few songs randomly made their place, it was quite annoying. I would be completely immersed in a serious situation, say Angel Dust and Husk's talk, or Lucifer's and Charlie's...and then BOOM, song, the most unrealistic thing someone would do in a situation. And the fact that it's them singing is canonically happening around everyone as well makes me cringe (because as I'm snapped out of the scene, I go to imagining random people or the characters just in the background staring awkwardly...if you ever seen that clip of (the original) Spider-Man 3 dance scene without any of the music and instead realistic noises, that's the energy I'm getting, and that's why I'm cringing). Which made me realize as the show progressed, I do not dislike musicals (shout out to Undertale the Musical by MOTI) but I dislike it when a musical is randomly plastered onto a show without anything that won't A. be jarring; and B. allow me the suspension of disbelief. And I believe the transition is the most important part (at least for me) as without a good transition, it seems like "randomly burst into a song," and that makes me go: "no one would do this in a moment like this???" and the scene is ruined until I get immersed again. But regardless of it, its continuity errors and pacing, good ass show with an intersting story. I honestly prefer this more than Helluva Boss since the plot actually felt like it went somewhere and took the characters with it, while Helluva Boss still has a story but then also feels like a soft reset each episodes?? It's like Rick and Morty without noticeable character development.

I hear this take a lot and as someone who does watch a lot of musicals, I never related to it. Especially with the two songs you mentioned because I never thought it was TOO random. (some sort of plot progression or what little character development we got = song). Many people's dissatisfaction comes from them not knowing about what ACTUAL musicals bring to the table and not knowing that Hazbin was going to be one (in a very loose sense). Songs and singing do seem to be ingrained into the essence of the Hazbin universe, which should be noted at least. In terms of our world, it'd be weird to break out into song but apparently Lilith built Hell from the ground up through her singing. And if you're watching a show where the worst thing about hell is the lack of public hygiene, being able to take them all singing at face value should come easy. I agree that some of the songs seem kinda out of nowhere but I'm surprised at the two examples you picked too. Loser, Baby and More Than Anything were two of the most well set up. The transitions from emotional dialogue into song felt very natural imo. Not in real life, but in musicals emotional moments normally lead up to songs. It'd almost be weird if they didn't lol. Better examples would be Whatever it Takes, It Starts With Sorry, or Out For Love. They don't feel as naturally placed imo. Hell's Greatest Dad and Respectless are also pretty random but in a way that makes sense for a musical.

@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop the reason I choose those two was because those two scenes were the ones I was extremely hooked into, so to have music randomly start right after a character was being vulnerable was equally extremely jarring for me, and in turn made it a bad transition to me. It just really snapped me out of being into the world Something like the song in the court case or the ending one flowed better for me and worked- maybe because the climax was through the song instead than the speaking part so I could immerse in it better? Don't know how well to explain why those work but the examples I said don't but...they didn't for me 🤷
